Oh man, that variety show format worked so well for Nick & Jessica! Remember what a smash sensation the Osbournes variety show was? Boy, Rosie O'Donnell sure rewrote the book on how to do a great variety special! The networks remember how great these attempts to revive the long dead TV format went, because they're at it again. This time, FOX is dipping back into the American Idol well and plucking out plucky season four winner Carrie Underwood. They've scheduled Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special for a December 7 air-time. Luckily, since Underwood is doing just fine in her recording career, this isn't likely to be an attempt at a weekly series.
If the networks really do believe they can revive the variety format, this is a good way to do it. The holiday season seems to be the best time to lure American audiences into one-off specials and different kinds of programming. If the special does well, they can look for another one next year maybe. Or perhaps they'll have found something to do with all those former Idol contestants.

I used to watch The Porter Waggoner Show when he had Dolly Parton on. Carrie Underwood is a fine choice for hosting a variety show. I'd like to see a duet between Carrie and George Jones since Porter Waggoner is no longer with us. Or if not him, maybe Tyler Dean.

Refreshing to see Carrie get a show. She is one of the true gems to come out of AI. Not only is she a great singer, she is a beautiful woman and is always dresses to the nines.
Way to go FOX for showcasing one of your found talents. I will be watching her show for sure.
Look forward to another great season of "Idols" and to see how Ellen will do. Many say she doesn't belong there because she doesn't know anything about music, perhaps that is true. But that is like saying that none of us who purchase music know anything about it. One doesn't need to be a music mogul to be an expert.
And thank you for having a show like Idol, which gives normal folk who would never have a chance a platform to flourish.

Well, when it comes right down to it, we the public do the voting. Very few of us are music professionals.

I think it's a great idea. I will definately watch. I am so tired of the current prime time programing I just don't watch. I don't know if there is a large enough audiance to make a variety show successful or not. I realize times have changed. Sometimes old things become new and do very well. I will probably continue to stick to news, history, music and movies. Come on American Idol and 24. They are the only prime time shows I watch faithfully. We are definately in a "drought" right now!

I really hate the way her manager's have her dressing so trashy now! Boobs and butt hanging out...I never thought Carrie would go for that, but I guess even the girl next door has succombed to the "sex sells" theory. She's got a great voice, but I don't think she has enough on screen personality to pull off a variety show, so it's good that it's just a one time thing.

i cant stand carrie, i can only say there are so many others who are so much better than her. i just do see what it is that has driven her so high up there. her voice just doesnt make me feel anything other than, well nothing. this gal becoming to big so quickly smacks of the old days when you wanted your whoever to become something great so your "uncle" paid for it and it happened. i just dont get what she has to offer at all.

She's got a lot to offer, a talented voice and a great personality. Let's hear you sing.

Ah...wow, what did she do to you to say that you "...can't stand Carrie..."? It's not just you, Dharma, there's a lot of hostility being displayed here by quite a few of you. This young woman is a legitimate talent, and a beautiful girl. You may not like her style of music, or her blonde hair, but her vocal prowess cannot be denied if you have hearing at all. Jealousy is an ugly emotion people, reign it in.

She's got plenty to offer, a great voice(let's hear your singing voice if you think you can sing better) and a great personality. A lot of people are jealous of her and can't appreciate her talent.

I guess you never heard the song "Happy Holidays." Even Andy Williams sang "It's the holiday season" and puts on great Christmas shows every year. Get over it.
Christmas is the Holiday it is referring to. You don't have to be told, it's implied in the title.
