It's been a good week for Barbra Streisand. Her new CD, Love Is the Answer, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart, beating out Mariah Carey, Madonna and Paramore. Not bad for a lady who had her first chart-topper in 1964 with People. Well, tonight on BBC America, you'll have a chance to hear Streisand talk about the CD and sing two songs from it as well. Friday Night With Streisand & Ross airs on tonight at 9 p.m. on BBC America, a special edition of the UK talk show starring Jonathan Ross.
The show aired last Friday in England and clips have showed up on YouTube. Here's a sample of what you'll see if you tune in:
Streisand on television is always a special event – for her loyal fans – because even though she's been around for five decades, she's managed keep from being overexposed. Her singing on TV is as rare as a lunar eclipse.
The new CD is more jazzy thanks to the influence of singer Diana Krall, who produced the album, with Streisand executive producing.
The CD has proved to be historic. By reaching number one on Billboard, Streisand is the only performer or group to ever have number one albums in five decades – the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and now, the '00s. She also has the longest span between her first number on, 1964, and her more recent, Love Is the Answer 2009 – 45 years. And she is tied with the Beatles for third place behind Frank Sinatra (41) and Rolling Stones (36) for top ten album first week sales.
Any way you look at it, Streisand's career is amazing. The interview with Ross, hopefully, will be more insightful that Barbra's last Oprah visit. While that one was interesting, Oprah asked the same old questions of Barbra. I suspect that Mr. Ross might have some more interesting questions in his arsenal.

Ross's interview is boring, he's just too interested in himself. Waste of Barbra's time i thought. I watched the whole thing on Youtube. Amazing that her voice still sounds like that and she doesn't practice, and hasn't sung since last January!!! Go Babs! you are the greatest star - you are by far!

Thanks for the nice article. #1 in 5 decades- what a talent! I agree that Oprah was basically the same old questions. Ross asked a couple of the same old ones too, but we got a number of new questions/answers. I really enjoyed how relaxed she seemed. She actually seemed to enjoy herself. I found Ross funny. If the movie clips would have been included, it wouldn't have seemed like he spent so much time on his dogs. I still found them cute and at least something new. Barbra's voice was amazing. Love the new cd!
