The New Adventures of Old Christine: The Mole

The New Adventures of Old Christine(S05E03) I don't think it's giving anything away to say that the entire cold open to this episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine was done in the nude. I kept expecting Daniel Radcliffe to come traipsing through Christine's bathroom door. And for the record, I don't think I'd ever be comfortable enough around any ex to be able to have a normal conversation with both of us completely nude.

I've been a fan of this show since the first episode, and in all honesty, as we're sitting here in the fifth season, I'm surprised every year that it comes back. Not because I don't think it's a good show, but because it never has a huge audience and it seems to fly completely under the radar. And I say that with Julia Louis-Dreyfus having been nominated for her work on this show.

I laugh every time Christine reaffirms her stupidity. She knew nothing of the housing market crisis, nor did she know that people ran around without health care. It was a subtle way for the writers to tackle this hot-button issue while maintaining the focus of the show: to show what a self-centered imbecile Christine Campbell is.

And that's why I love The New Adventures of Old Christine. Christine is a moron. She's a selfish, petty and childish drunk who has virtually no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The people around her, on the other hand, are far better people and it is for them that we sympathize. Mostly because they have to put up with her crap.

I didn't see the mole underneath her boob being a bit of brownie, though. If Matthew's med student friend took a scraping of it, wouldn't it have fallen off then? Of course, it did look like the making out took precedence over the proper medical procedure.

The rest of the episode took place in Richard and New Christine's house. Richard's decided that since he made the down payment on the house, then he has as much right to be there as New Christine. What this leads to is a hilarious stand-off with dolls that Richard thinks are moving and a stolen cat that New Christine uses to trigger Richard's allergies.

New Christine has really grown into a character I enjoy watching on the show. When the series began, she was little more than a blonde bimbo, but since then she's become something much more interesting. She's still a blonde bimbo, but they've given her strange bits of emotional intelligence. Even better, she's the most unpredictable character on the show. You never know how she'll react to any given situation, or what she'll do next.

I loved the scene when she decided to forcibly throw Richard out and he went limp. And then after the struggle she faked being unconscious, which he almost fell for. It was so bizarre, but I love it. These two might actually be more entertaining on the show as contentious ex-lover roommates than they ever were as a mismatched couple.
