David Letterman's confession last Thursday was the last we've heard from him on the subject (Friday's show is taped earlier in the week - he returns tonight). The columnists and pundits and fans have had their say, though. Some people defend him, some dislike him, and some aren't fazed by it at all.But beyond the "creepy" factor of it (that's Dave's own word), what about the moral and/or legal side of it? Should Letterman be fired? Reprimanded? Will he be sued? Should people stop watching him? Should advertisers leave his show? Should one of the women come out and do a "Ten Things About Dating David Letterman" list?

breaking news. rich, successful (single) man sleeps with women! next up, earth revolves around sun and dog bites man!
but seriously, IF it was anything more than that then i can see why he should get reprimanded or fired but if its just that he had sex with women at work then its really nothing new.

I think the fact that he was threatened by some moron is far worse then anything the networks can do to him. I', sure there are people once again calling for Letterman's head on stick. Short of firing him what can CBS do really? Take him off the air for a few weeks till the controversy blows over? Fine him? Think the fact he made the confession on the air as opposed to a written statment to the press was rather brave considering how private he is about his life. Many of our favorite celebrities cheat on thier wife/girlfriend and whether that ends his marriage or not is between him and his wife. CBS won't fire him now that he's pulling in better ratings then "The Tonight Show."

If he was single when it happened it is nobody's business. Why should he get fired for having a sex life. Are the women involved claiming sexual harassment? If not everyone should mind their own business.

Having an affair really isn't ground to have someone fired, so I doubt CBS will do anything unless for some reason his ratings severely drop off. Which they won't. If anything this will help is ratings in the short term.
And does any of this really change the overall opinion people had of the man. No one considered the main was a saint.

Those that hate Letterman will call for him to be fired and those that like Letterman will support him. Let's call it a draw and forget about it rather than going through this whole tedious routine again.

I think the worst punishment he can get is to stay on the air, and I'm a Letterman fan!
Really, 50 percent of his schtick since he's been on CBS has been about the sexual lives of Bill Clinton, Madonna, John Edwards, Alex Rodriguez, Elliot Spitzer, etc., etc. How can he possibly tell those jokes anymore?

We need to wait and see what the fallout is first. If any of the women come forward with what will amount to harassment, then there will be serious repercussions. Failing that, a boss having an affair with an employee is still a serious matter that will be dealt with internally, but I doubt the public will see any of it.

It's only a matter to be dealt with, in any way, by Worldwide Pants... and, oh, wait... yeah... Letterman is the head of Worldwide Pants.
Letterman doesn't work for CBS. Period. His production company produces a show that CBS airs. Letterman is self-employed.
Not only that, but Worldwide Pants has no policy against romances in the workplace. None. He's not in violation of his own labor policies or practices. Unless he's violated the law, what's the problem here? Or, better yet, what's the point?
Letterman wasn't married at the time. And what if he was?
Last I checked, while morally questionable, adultery isn't illegal. So, even if he was screwing the whole staff just last week, as long as he wasn't harassing anyone, big deal!
I mean, it's like some of you folks live in a bubble.
Johnny Carson was married 4 times. Twice he got divorced and remarried to different women in the same year (1963 and 1972). Are we expected to believe he got a divorce and then fell in love with those women?
Concern yourselves with your own sex lives and you'll probably get laid more often than worrying about a late night talk show getting in the pants of some of his staff while both he and they are single.......
It boggles the mind.

Adultery IS illegal in many states, including New York. But Letterman is not guilty of adultery.

Listen, I think Letterman handled the whole thing well. As opposed to politicians who never tell the truth [think John Edwards]. The only thing that didn't work—maybe—was that it was handled with too much humor.
As long as the relationships were consensual, I am fine with it. But the tight ass evangelicals will probably use this to bring him down somehow. Hopefully they will keep quiet since their guys have been hardly perfect the past few years.

Since he is the boss, he should be fired by CBS for cause (you can also bet his contract has a morals clause).
But it should be apparent that the eastern elites, media and Hollywood would have a two-tier moral/ethics standard for their "specials". So, I expect nothing of consequence. (See this: http://purpleslog.wordpress.com/2009/08/29/why-the-left-can-excuse-ted-on-chappaquiddick/ )

Since you are so absolute in meting out judgment and punishment . . . would you also propose removing from office any and all politicians who have ever had affairs/inappropriate relationships/other indiscretions/any illegal behavior. No matter which political party (GOP/Democrats alike)? And should that also apply to religious figures, business leaders, and other leaders?
Just want to see where you draw the line on your moral relativism, if any.

Anybody out there remember what happened to Bob Barker, who did basically the same thing and WAS sued for sexual harassment? Nothing. CBS did nothing. The public didn't stop watching his show either. Dave will be just fine, as he should be. Dating is not a crime.

Last I checked Letterman wasn't being sued by anyone. What's the whole argument here? He had sex with someone. I hardly think that's cause for being pulled off the air. Supposed "morals clause" or not.
Besides, the money he has you can pretty much guarantee that he has great lawyers, so his contract with CBS is probably awesome.

For some reason, some of you just aren't getting it... the refusal to accept facts seems to be intentional, but I'll explain it one more time for the slow amongst you:
Letterman was single. The women were single. Unless you're actually suggesting that pre-marital sex is the issue here, in which case, wake up, it's not 1953, what's the problem?
The fact that he was the boss?
Here's a clue, a boss dating, screwing, or even cheating on his spouse with an employee isn't illegal. Workplace romance isn't illegal. The only illegality possible here, presuming we accept that it was a consenting set of relationships, is sexual harassment... which didn't happen. The chick who this mostly centers around is embarrassed and has apologized to Letterman. She doesn't work for him. She hasn't worked for him for years. She doesn't suggest any illegal harassment. So, what bug is up your asses about this? Because Letterman is getting some and you folks with the cheetos in your mom's basements aren't?
To paraphrase another ladies man, Shatner, get a life!

Recently, there has been a lot more of a spotlight on the NBC latenight shows, what with the shuffle, and them all getting "new" shows (ok, they're all doing the same shows, just in new studios, in new time slots).
This is possibly the best thing that can happen for CBS latenight - it will pull viewers away from NBC's latenight "powerhouse" (if you can call it that)

He shouldn't get fired. CBS Chairman Les Moonves had a thing and then married his employee, Julie Chen. Who gives a rat's ass?
