Ugly Betty season premiere moved up

Betty_uglyIf you had the return of Ugly Betty in your datebook -- or PDA -- for Friday, October 9, it's time for an update. ABC has moved the season premiere of Ugly Betty to October 16. It'll be a double shot of Betty, two-hours instead of just one. After the premiere, Ugly Betty will fall into its regular slot of Friday at 9 p.m.

Unfortunately, a double dose of Ugly Betty won't be enough to pump up the ratings. ABC isn't doing Betty any favor by plunking it on Friday nights when there are less people watching TV. Sure, there are lower expectations, but what does it say about the network's faith in the show? Why not just put it on Saturday when even less viewers tune in? (What happened to programming for Saturday night anyway? Once upon a time, great shows actually thrived on Saturdays!)

The new season of Betty might be the last, and if that's the case, the producers should plan for it. The original Colombian telenovela only ran from 1999-2001 -- albeit a very different incarnation of Betty -- and actually had a conclusion. That Betty had a makeover and married her boss.

There have already been makeover signs for ABC's Ugly Betty, including the removal of her braces, but if she and Daniel were to wind up together, this season will have to deal with that. Up till now, they've been good friends and nothing more. Maybe that is the intent, especially since Molly died and Daniel turned to Betty for support in the last episode.

While that might make a sweet Hollywood ending, I envision the American Betty winding up strong and independent, fully realized and without the need of a man to validate her success. What do you think? How do you think Ugly Betty should end, if this is indeed the final season?
