(S06E07) Project Runway finally got down to ten contestants, a number where I could finally tell the difference between Shirin and Irina. This week we welcome the return of Michael Kors. He quickly used the term "bridesmaid," and his sharp opinions were missed. Let's hope the eliminations will be less erratic.
This week's challenge revolved around the color blue. The outfits had to be two Macy's-inspired, commercial-friendly outfits. The reward is an ability to design a dress for Macy's collection. The teams had one day, a $100 budget, and no immunity for the next challenge.
After all the contestants made their pitches, the leaders and teams that were formed were (Leader & Who they picked):
Irina & Gordana
Althea & Logan
Carol Hannah & Shirin
Christopher & Epperson
Louise & Nicolas
Most of the partnerships had a little bit of trouble. Nicolas can't stand all the ruffles that Louise was creating. Irina hated the fact that Gordana didn't have any opinions. Christopher and Epperson attempt a shirt-dress and it turns out all too literal. Althea pulls from her bag of tricks and decides to make yet another suit with skirt. Luckily, she reiterates every episode of Models of the Runway by saying how good looking Logan is.
When Tim comes around, he has a problem with several of the dresses: Louise's ruffles are too abrupt, several pairs don't match, and Gordana's cummerbund looked wrong. The big problem was that Louise never actually dealt with Tim's complaints.
I don't understand why all the teams had so much finishing troubles with this one day challenge. Most of the pieces were short and the designers had time to fit the dresses on their models. Irina's was the most finished, and although hers was the longest, it was very figure free.
The judges were Michael Kors, Zanna Roberts, and Martine Reardon (EVP). Our high teams were Carol Hannah & Shirin (good interpretation, great tunic, both sheik) and Irina & Gordana (dress was great, pattern was nice, strong blouse). The low teams were Louise & Nicolas (overstated ruffles, bridesmaid with a loofah) and Christopher & Epperson (neither was wearable, questionable bib, too literal shirt dress, table cloth, teal disco-pumpkin). The winner was Irina and the person out was Louise.
Although I saw some more medium teal blue colors in one of the palates in Macy's dossier, I'm confused as to how Epperson thought that teal was blue and not green. When Michael called it a pumpkin (more of a squash), it confirmed my fears. I would have scored the dress low just because it wasn't really blue. The rest of the competitors used shades of the blue family that didn't shift to greens or purples.
I still think Carol Hannah's dress reminded me of Chris March's sailor outfit in Season Four (albeit with more taste) and was probably the reason she didn't win. Irina's Macy's dress looked really boring from the one shot we were given. Chris' previous win and high standing kept him around.
Anyone actually upset with the elimination? Leave comments below.

Project Runway should not have a challenge where the designers have to make clothes for retail again. Why? Because retail = boring. Especially for Macy's.
I thought, personally, that Chris and Epperson had the best designs. I thought they were innovative, but apparently not a fit for the people who shop at Macy's.
Ugh, and Irina's "holiday dress" (a short black dress with a butterfly on it).....boring, just BORING.
This may have been one of my least favorite challenges in 6 seasons.

I want to know how Logan's "too short to be worn, hoochie suit" got a pass. The skirt was too short. The slit in it was up to the model's lotus and it was badly sewn. This season, I sense that the producers have more to say about who stays than the work product.

If you removed the skirt from the equation, Althea's three pieces remaining (the two tops and the pants) overpowered the fact that Logan probably made the skirt too short. The rest of the outfits were very Macy's Inc and easily exchangeable (I think the pants would have gone well with the blazer top).
I believe that I would go to work in a skirt that's too short (and hope for Bridget Jones-like compliments) than walk in with a frilled front, applique attached to my dress, a squash who came from Red Lobster, or a man's shirt with a belt wrapped around it. Thus ranking Althea's outfits third place out of five.

One thing that made me mad is the fact that we lost Ramon last week for Louise. Ridiculous. Her outfits were terrible.

I'm not sure if R'amon could have survived another commercial challenge anyway. The commercial piece he made for the surfers challenge was a piece of silk wrapped around the neck with a belt, something that's not Macy's Inc. And his other pieces don't fit the mold either (Huge Flower? Bowling Ball Dress? His Emmy gown with too much going on up top?) If he could do something tasteful like his paper dress, maybe he'd squeak past.
I doubt that his design would have made him Leader quality, so he would either have been eliminated with Louise, be hassled for not working with Christopher well and get eliminated, or thrown under the bus like Gordana almost was.

This episode made me blue and wish more of the contestants took chances. . .

And really, what was up with Irina being such a....jerk? Calling Gordana out totally unprovoked? Seriously.

hey Janelle: I agree! I disliked Irina for being a jerk, not giving constructive input (none that we saw anyways) and attempting to backstab. I wanted to reach into the TV and konk her on the head with something. Or Gordana could have done it for me.

I was under the impression that Logan worked more on the pants and bluish-gray shirt (since the outfit that had his name captioned below when Lisa modelled the outfit on the runway) and Althea did the suit. So I don't get why some here are blaming Logan for the too short skirt on the suit. Also, Michael Pascua, please learn how to spell "chic" not sheik. Or, was that supposed to be funny and I missed it!

In retrospect I'd put blame on Tara because of the fact that Althea made a strikingly similar skirt for Tanisha and it worked, while Tara's walk probably made her skirt ride up.
The biggest point that I blame Logan is because he voiced over during the skirt situation ending with, "There's nothing you can do but laugh about it." It made me associate the skirt with Logan.
Re: Sheik, totally didn't notice it, so I'm going to chalk that up as both a backhanded compliment for Gordana and the since sheik can define as a "irresistibly attractive" man, how good the outfits would look even on a man.
