Curb Your Enthusiasm: Vehicular Fellatio

Vivica A. Fox as Loretta Black on Curb Your Enthusiasm
(S07E02) "I don't like you. Why would I want to hug you?" - Larry

Larry David is not all about appearances. It's rare to see him masking his true intentions when most of the time he has absolutely no problem saying how he feels or asking for what he wants. But, much like the episode of this title indicates, when you're talking about a blowjob in a car (or anything crass or uncomfortable), it helps to dress it up a little.

Why's that? Well, as Larry found out, there's really no good way to break up with someone who has cancer. He has no problem telling Loretta that he doesn't feel like taking her to get her nails done or arguing with her about the thermostat in last week's premiere. So you'd think Larry would have no problem calling it quits to Loretta's face after all the hoops he's had to jump through. As if Larry, of all people, would care if he hurt the feelings of a cancer patient. Nope. Apparently cancer has the rare ability to actually make even Larry David squeamish.

Leave it to Larry, though, to find someone else to do the dirty work for him. Seeing Dr. Karen Trundle (Sharon Lawrence) explain her methods to Dr. Phil on TV was hilarious. It was as if Larry were looking in a mirror as she described what she considered to be a toxic person, someone who could do more damage than good to a cancer patient.

Leave these types of people behind if you have cancer, Trundle said. So obviously Larry took Loretta to see Dr. Trundle in the hopes that she'd advise Loretta to vacate the David household ASAP once she saw him act like an ass. Pretty solid plan actually.

Now, as I said last week regarding the intricacies of the plots on Curb, the whole set-up in this episode was brilliant as we watched Larry attempt to open a plastic sealed GPS from Jeff and Susie only to realize that he needed an X-acto knife to open it. And naturally, the knife itself was sealed in the same type of plastic packaging, meaning it needed another knife to be opened... and you get the picture. So how did we get from A to Z? Blowjobs. Something that Loretta doesn't want to see someone else get apparently. So much for Larry's plan.

The ironic thing about it? No one got a blowjob except Jeff. Richard didn't get one from his girlfriend (though I'm not sure why Jeff lied about it), Dr. Trundle (Sharon Lawrence) didn't give one to her husband (at least she said she didn't), and Larry didn't get one from Alton's wife. But seeing is believing and when someone's head rises up from the lap of a driver, it certainly makes you wonder.

Other thoughts...

  • Thank god Loretta's disgust over Larry's "infidelity" with Alton's "f*ckin' fine" wife didn't extend to Leon. This guy needs to stick around as long as possible because, hey - he and Larry? They like Legos now.
  • Larry was right - his old neighbor was a moron. He hung his sunglasses around his own neck and should have known they were there before he went in to hug Larry. But how do you argue with someone who has cancer? Well... you don't.
  • Everyone was going to a party at Michael York's. Where's he been? We haven't seen him since the restaurant opening in season three.

In closing, four words:

Seinfeld. Reunion. Next. Week.
