(S01E01) Well, that was it. The most eagerly anticipated premiere of the season, if early buzz is any indicator. Is it the next Lost? Is it as good as everyone says it was? It can be. As much as I liked this pilot, though, I can't say that I know for sure how good the show is going to be based on it.
The opening sequence was every bit as epic and awe-inspiring as the opening moments of Lost. Whereas in Lost we had the aftermath of a cataclysmic plane crash on a deserted island, here we had the cataclysmic crash of ... everything! They dropped us right into the moments after the global blackout to immediately show us the impact it would have. It was like the opening of a big budget summer blockbuster.
Oh, but I wanted to see more scenes of the aftermath of this cataclysmic event. I think I could have watched that for almost this entire episode. The global fallout of this must be catastrophic, and while I know it would have been cost prohibitive to do it, damn, it would have been awe-inspiring to really show how epic this event was.
In that moment, I couldn't help but think of the majesty of the concept: that every person on the planet blacks out at the exact same time for two minutes, seventeen seconds and has a vision of their lives on April 29, 2010 at 10pm Pacific Time. That's seven billion visions, combining to paint a complete picture of that future moment. Can the mosaic of those prophecies be compiled in time?
In time for what? Well, so far we don't know, but as I was watching it, I kept thinking that someone had to have had a vision of something that was important. I think Mark's (Joseph Fiennes) vision is important, but more in helping him pull the pieces together. But there's a significance to that date, other than it being my brother's birthday.
The awkward positions that the visions are putting people in with their interactions with one another is fascinating to watch. Next week, Olivia is going to meet that boy's father and recognize him from her vision as the man who was not her husband that she had intimate feelings toward. That will dramatically impact their relationship. Especially because he had to have had the same vision.
Who were the people gunning for Mark in his vision? Dominic Monaghan's character has one now, per the preview sequences, so what does that mean about his character? There's some connection with Red Panda, which seems to be an omnipresent corporation. There was a bus billboard for the brand, and the logo was also on Mark's wall of clues. Oh, shout out for the nod to Oceanic Airways on the billboard in the distance there. A great nod to an obvious thematic inspiration in Lost.
The fact that I'm left wondering so many things proves that as the opening salvo of an epic drama, "No More Good Days" was a resounding success. I want to meet more characters, see more visions, watch Mark pull the pieces together, find out if Demetri (John Cho) seeing nothing can mean something other than his death. I want to know why Marks' daughter said that her vision/dream was that there were "no more good days." What does it mean? What path is humanity on now?
And that video from Detroit. The man who wasn't asleep. Oh that moment grabbed me and would not let go. It got me excited about this mystery in a way that even seven billion people passing out simultaneously couldn't. There's something to this and it's going to be fascinating. And if that guys turns out to be the kid's father, from Olivia's dream, then my wife will have been right and I'll have to start listening to her more.

That was actually pretty good. Excellent premise, solid writing and for the most part a good cast.
Here's what might sink it though- I have no idea who the leading actor is in this thing, but he is terrible. The character is clearly a ripoff of Jack in Lost but somehow even more annoying. Terrible actor, weak character who is just overall unlikeable. They're going to have to tone him down and move towards the ensemble.

Joseph Fiennes is an award-winning British actor of several fine films, but known mostly for his role as the Bard in "Shakespeare in Love". Personally, I liked him even more in "Enemy at the Gates" opposite Jude Law.
Great actor, and showed it in "Flash Forward" (to me, anyway -- obviously not to you).

@Paul
Well, I didn't know about his past which is admittedly impressive. Perhaps I'm just hung up on the character, who I still find to be a rip off of Jack.

He is a fine actor, but he's British, and I thought his "tackling" an american accent--well, he hasn't quite figured that one out yet. If you want to see a "great" performance (tongue firmly planted in cheek) check out "Killing Me Softly," especially if you are a fan of Heather Graham (thank me later), but watch out for the acting--it gets pretty thick. Also, should mention that this is Ralph Fiennes brother, too.

I watched the first half and was bored, so I watched Parks and Rec instead.
I will try again next week. If it stays boring, I will quit watching. I don't understand what all the hype was about. The trailer for V looked amazing, so that should be interesting.

Check out the oceanic poster in the city before the chaos starts. It seems like I was about the only one who caught that.

Also good start to such a hyped show. I hope we get more in the coming episodes that makes people stick with it. I don't know how the numbers will be but I hope there decent.

the billboard for Oceanic airlines is advertising their perfect safety record. FF is set in 2009, and in the Lost world we knew, 815 was known to have been a very public disaster back in '04. Then there was the incident in '77...
also, the headline in the paper he's reading is "yellow sheds light on alzheimer's research"
a FF clue, or did that billboard just send me into full on readingmeaningintoeverylittlething LOST mode? :)
definitely a possibility.

When I watched the pilot last week, I also thought the same thing as your wife about who the mysterious man is. After watching it again, I'm not as sure, but I'll be proud of myself if it turns to be true (I mean, he's the only "major charater" that we've met so far that it could be).
Loved seeing the Oceanic poster, too!

For me the first show did what it was supposed to do: I will be back next week to see what happens next.

After watching the first episode, this show got an immediate season pass on my DVR. Loved it. When they showed the guy walking around in the stadium while everyone else was out? Creepy! I'm hoping this actually ends up being as good as it seems to be with this start, and I hope it's not canceled before we get some answers to the mystery. Of the new shows I've caught, this is by far my favorite.

Agreed, will definitely continue to watch, has the potential to become ABC's replacement for "Lost" when it ends next year. I'm half tempted to read the book it's based on...

The show was just okay until the last 5 minutes and the appearance of the mystery man.
As is usual with these drip-drip-drip shows (like Lost) that have great concepts but are too dense and too slow to keep my attention. Especially with the structure of 5-7 minutes of content and then 3 minutes of commercials. You never get any momentum going.
I will definitely check in next week. I'm sure I'll be complaining about that one, too.

I must admit that while the premise is very intriguing yet I started to lose interest towards the end of the first hour...until the guy got up and walked out of the baseball game.
Nice hook there at the end.

My only concern wiith the show is the timeline. Changing the flash forward from 21 years in the book to 6 months seems a risk. That means that soon enough, by the end of this season maybe, we will catch up to the flash. The writers might be able to keep the story gong another year discovering why it happened but it seems like a natural goal for the series. I find myself thinking the same way I did with Prison Break when it began... I love the show but at what point will it run out of the good idea that inspired it? We shall see... I still plan on tuning in to find out how things develop. Maybe the whole flash thing is how the Island on Lost learned to time travel?

I just hope they follow the book a bit more in terms of the Flash Forward mechanics. So far, apart from that, I don't think there are any similarities.

I remember reading somewhere that each season will end with a new flash, new revelations. that seems like a pretty good solution, keeps the mystery going.

I don't even like Matthew Fox but love Lost, so lead doesn't matter. It's the great side characters.
Loved the show. They should've shown Hour 2. I'm hoping for more carnage in flashbacks.
Dominic Monaghan is so cool!

I don't understand what makes a couple of you think that the guy walking around in the stadium might also be the kid's father - did I miss something?
