Mitch Fatel's new special, Mitch Fatel is Magical, debuts tonight at 11PM on Comedy Central. And whether you agree that Mitch is, in fact, magical, depends heavily on two things. First, whether you like his delivery, which makes him look like an eight-year-old who has pulled you aside to tell you a really important secret about boogers, complete with a goofy smile at the end. And the second thing is whether you enjoy stand-up comedy about sex. The more than one-hour of comedy on the DVD version of the special, which is the one I reviewed (it hits stores Tuesday with bonus interviews, animations, etc.), is devoted almost entirely to sex. In fact, the first ten minutes are devoted almost exclusively to boobs. He talks about the variation of nipple types, and how God went crazy on the day he made them - "Mrs. God's like, 'Come to bed, God,' he's like, 'I'm makin' more nipples.'" He's also convinced that Edison invented the light bulb so he could watch oral sex (and invented a movie camera shortly thereafter).
Part of what makes Fatel endearing to some fans is that he uses words like "boobs," and it seems to thrill him a little inside to do so. Despite the fact that his act is sex-obsessed, Fatel rarely swears (he once told me in an interview for the Boston Globe that he tries to avoid slang to keep the act as "upper class" as possible, and that it actually grosses him out to see other comedians making obscene gestures and spelling everything out for an audience).
He didn't always do this as well as he does on Magical. The material comes off smoother than it has in the past. He seems more comfortable with his persona and the audience, sometimes pointing at someone when he says something kinky, inferring they might be into that particular thing (tough to give examples without describing an offensive act here). A lot of people do like his delivery, including my doctor, which makes for the occasional interesting pre-physical conversation. But no one will blame you if you think it's more creepy than magical.
Here's a preview to test your reaction to Fatel -- his bit about the Internet:

I watched the entire special and didn't laught once. I'd rather watch Dane Cook then him, and that's saying a lot for me, because I think Dane Cook is the worst.
But I was wrong.
Word of advice to Mitch and other comedians: If you are really creepy looking, please don't make your audience imagine you having sex in various ways.
I was having enough trouble getting over his over the top slow delivery and creepy smile, but to make me picture him naked and a woman on her knees by choice, was enough to make me wanna puke.
And, sex jokes are so old. How did he get a special on comedy central talking only about sex?
confused and nauseous
