A lot of you made your feelings heard about Antonio Ballatore winning this season of Design Star by commenting on a post I wrote earlier this week. The scruffy and tattooed LA. designer has tons of fans (just check out his Facebook page), but a lot of HGTV watchers couldn't warm up to his unconventional designs and slacker dude persona. Me? I'm a fan. The guy is obviously talented. I like his edgy designs and his laid back everyman attitude. His new show, The Antonio Project, will definitely be something different for HGTV. It won't be for everybody, but it'll be refreshing to see a guy like Antonio host a show on a cable network mostly populated by dull yuppie types.
The HGTV Web site has a preview of this Sunday's premiere of The Antonio Project. The former set designer will have to redesign his own home in five days. By the looks of his house, the network is doing Antonio a favor. The place looks like a crime scene or an abandoned strip mall. Head after the jump to see a pic.

What's the deal, Antonio? Is "'90s crack house style" all the rage in L.A. these days? (I kid, I kid.)
The Antonio Project premieres Sunday at 10 p.m.

He mentioned in a few episodes of Design Star (this was the first season I ever watched the show and it's because I was visiting a friend who was watching I instantly liked Antonio so I'm glad he won) that he was a flipper on top of being a set designer, so I imagine that Rob is right; he probably just bought the place because he liked the location and/or style and he wanted to go all out.
I also wouldn't be surprised if HGTV just bought the house and are using it as one giant prop with the caveat of calling it Antonio's house.

I didn't like him and I can't understand why the station is paying him to do the show to begin with but why is he getting his own home done? That's like double dipping! I don't remember anyone else on that channel having their personal space done.

HGTV picked the wrong winner. I liked them both but voted for Dan at the very end. Now that I have watched Antonios show--I thought the design was mostly trashy and college bachelor pad. Don't think he will last too long with this type of result. Not to say he is a bad guy--just not a great designer.

The only good thing was the kitchen, but you can have those lavendar walls. What the hell is with him and this lavendar color he is always using. The dining room was pure trash, the bedroom pics did not got with the headboard. Definite loser

Talk about the bedroom, did you see the BRASS KNUCLES on the night stand table...I can't believe HGTV condones Brass Knuckles, I think they are outlawed in some states.

I thought Antonio won because he was a different kind of TV host who happened to have design talent. I thought he did some cool things during "Design Star" and had a refreshing style. "The Antonio Project" was a disaster -- good kitchen, good bathroom, but horrendous BR and LR!!!! This wasn't "edgy" or "eclectic"; it was trashy. What was hip and cool in his short DS style became grating on an hour-long show. How many fist bumps and dude-to-dude greetings can one person stand? I found a few of his BR comments just creepy. I liked the guy on DS. I hope that Antonio returns, or I'll be watching something else.

Stop the hating guys..he was the clear cut winner from the BEGINNING. His personality and style won the judges over and they picked the RIGHT winner. People in TV land want something SAFE and "traditional" and wanted Dan to win..but seriously guys..how boring was he?
While Antonio's style is NOT for everyone; it is an edgy style that HGTV needs. Ever hear of Guy Fieri? Did Foodtv EVER have someone like him on the network..and look how successful he is?

I'd looked forward to the show, but was disappointed with all the hand slapping and yakking. It was boring. When the final reveal came, the kitchen, though not my taste, was great. The bathroom was okay and the rest was trash. I thought HGTV was about home improvement and not lessons in bad taste for bikers. I doubt I'll watch anything else with Antonio.

The "judges" made a huge mistake! Antonio will not come into my home - for a "project" -- nor on screen. My husband will finally get his big screen back. (He says thanks HGTV!)

Antonio is different from anyone else on HGTV and I think that's why the judges chose him. I have to assume the Design Star contst was pre-recorded because they never could put a show together that quickly. Do I like him? I'm reserving judgement.

My husband and I watched the entire segment of Design Star. We felt that one of the ladies had her show cancelled because she was in charge when the $10,000. Gazebo was purchased. It is our opinion that Dan was untruthful because he counted his $5,000. on air, but yet he spent double that amount. We were happy with the final selection because we felt Antonio had done a decent job. However, we watched him do his home last evening and it was absolutely horrible. His bedroom reminded us of a sleezy Motel in a movie, no class whatsoever. As far as his show is concerned, we will consider it cancelled as we will not watch. We love HGTV and appreciate all the excellent programming.

Last night I took a long, warm bubble bath, and read a juicy book until I fell asleep. Unlike the past Sunday nights, when I watched DS with high expectations (because the designers had numerous positive comments about him) that Dan Vickery would be judged the winner. How disappointing that the head honchos would pick this looser. Won't be watching Antonio EVER, so guess I'll just find another way to spend my Sun. nights. I hope Dan is signed with another network and blows the roof off their ratings.

I don't know what sets Antonio designed but he is not a good designer!!! Althought, I like many of the current HG shows I can see the need for a variety of hosts but from what I have read Antonio is not is!!! I didn't watch his show and it seems that I made the right choice. Hopefully, the network will come to it's senses before they loose all of their viewers.

How can people compare Antonio to Guy F. on the Food Network. Guy is a riot and very different but he is polite, intelligent, gracious, and most of all talented in what his show is about. Antonio is none of these things.

Antionio won because he was absolutely the best in every challenge event. He took charge, had great ideas and executed each idea better than any of the other designers. He absolutely pleased all of his clients, as well as his last client, who happened to be him (his house). His house should reflect who he is, not who we want him to be. Successful designing is that the designer pleases the person he is designing for. He can do all designs, even trashy ones. I would have him design for me in a heart-beat (if I could afford him). I believe he would listen to what I am looking for an execute the design better than any of the other designers, and I would not have to apologize for my particular taste. You go Antonio!

Lee -- thanks for being what seems to be one of the FEW rational commenters here. Did everyone just forget the great designs he did on DS????? This was HIS house so he is certainly permitted to do whatever he wants to his own house. Does anyone really believe if they hired him to do something at their house he would bring in the same kind of design? I look forward to his new show and hope he has great success!

I couldn't believe what I was seeing! It's interesting to see how bad bad can be! I think he must be in with the producers who bombed big time. And they won't get their money back! Thumbs down for one of the worst designers I have ever seen. He was funny and amusing on the other show - a great "also ran" but c'mon, is own show? Obviously he's related to the producers. And as for Candace, I've totally lost respect for her. Geeze what a disaster.

I found him entertaining as a host and thought some of the things he picked out, namely the "trone" and table, were interesting. But the living/dining room was this jumbled mishmash and the bedroom was just plain ugly. Sorry, but the "headboard" = epic fail.
And incidentally, brass knuckless are very much illegal in CA (and probably all other states).
Perhaps he used them to "pursuade" that merchant to take off $600 from the $1200 chair.
