It seems like not even two months ago, I was interviewing Ron Livingston about his exciting new ABC drama, Defying Gravity (probably because it was about 6 weeks ago), and now it's gone. After airing only 8 episodes, ABC has just announced that last night's episode of Gravity would be its last.
Although ABC hasn't given any official word about its cancellation, it wasn't as though it came as much of a surprise, given the show's troubles from the very beginning. According to Ace Showbiz, "It premiered to only 3.83 million viewers on August 2 and the number has constantly deteriorated since then. Last week, ABC has excluded listing Gravity on the schedule after the September 13 episode but did not give explanation to that."
The fact that everyone from the show's producers to its actors kept on describing Defying Gravity as "Grey's Anatomy in space," probably didn't help matters much either. I've seen most of the episodes, and while it could have done with a lot less Grey's-like twinkly music to signify emotions, it was a perfectly passable summer show. Luckily, for all of you fans out there, SlashControl has all of the episodes available to view online.
What do you think? Are you sad to see it go, or are you amazed it lasted this long?

I really liked this show and I hope by some miracle it get at least the "Jericho" treatment. Or a least finish out the current series because it left us with a huge cliffhanger last night.

I agree w/parannoyed44 - I liked the show. I think ABC will regret this in the long run. When Star Trek originally aired it didn't start out as the best show on TV, but eventually became a cult classic (and money-maker). I think 'Defying Gravity' had the same possibilities. Too bad - ABC should rethink their decision

Why are all the pretty good shows always cancelled so soon, and the garbage stays on?

watched every episode and last night my husband and i figured it would be back after this season. kind of feel like why watch a new show and really get into it and then it is cancelled, like the Unusuals and the show Life on Mars. seems like ABC always cancelles shows.

This sucks big time. Networks put a good show on at an odd time then pull the plug without any resolution. Please make a movie to fill in all the gaps and give us fans some closesure on a good plot. I'm ready to start complaining to advertisers about how unfairly the network theats their customers by moving shows around and not letting the viewer know whats going on.
There was a space show a few years ago, I think it was "Serinty" or something like that. It gave us a coulple of good years...then pull the plug, but came back with a movie and gave the fans closure. When you stop production on a good show with a mysteries plot, I want a conclusion.
The network decision makers are idiots.

It seems a shame that the networks continue to do this to us. We enjoy the show and then get vested in the story and boom, it's canceled.

I really liked the show, it was different but interesting. I hope viewers can bring it back at least long enough to wrap the storyline up. What is in Pod4?

I thought the ending of Defying Gravity was very weak. Now I know why. It wasn't meant to be the ending at all! ABC blew it. Between Ugly Betty (here, gone, here, gone..) and Samantha Who (here, gone, here, gone) I get the impression the folks at ABC are not very bright.

Even though this show sounded like something I would like, I didn't watch it because shows like this don't last on the big three networks, and I am sick of having shows cancelled as soon as I start enjoying them. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has no faith left in the network execs.
It was an easy call, really. A sci fi space show on ABC? I figured it would last about 5 or 6 episodes, then be gone. If it made it further, well there are always the dvd's, right?

I am right there with you. The only shows new shows on the networks I will even attempt to watch are NBC's. They at least try a bit harder than ABC or CBS. I no longer bother with either of them. Most of my TV watching comes off the Cable Networks. You think all these big TV execs would start recognizing the problem when Network viewership keeps getting siphoned of by the cable networks. People are just starting to get fed up with them.

I am sad to see it go, I really enjoyed it and after last weeks episode, was just beginning to pick up. Ah well, I knew I shouldn't have started watching it in the first place...

Just curious if ABC or any other network pays attention to viewership via Hulu or fancast.

Yea, seriously. I found out about this show during episode 3 when my dad was telling me about it (because he loved Ron Livingston in Band of Brothers), and I got immediately hooked. Sunday night is unfortunately a bad night for me, so I end up watching all the episodes on hulu. I hope they do include hulu when they assess ratings because it's a #1 watched show on hulu right now.

yea ive only been only able to watch this show on hulu since i work third shift and dont catch most tv so this ticks me off since its one of the few shows i was looking foward to each week, ugh and to leave us with that cliffhanger...maybe syfy will pick it up and not waste this shows potential, never seen grays anatomical so i cant comment on the comparison

I liked it, but why even try on a network? better off approaching SyFy or any cable channel.
Networks hate science fiction. It's amazing that some shows have made it at all.

That's because SciFi costs a lot to make and has a limited audience. I've been a fan since the first Star Trek and Roddenberry had the same problem. Also let's not forget Battlestar Galactia which faced the same problem. They want cheap drama that they hope appeals to a large audience. Never gonna change I guess.
