The Partridge Family was one of those cheesy 1970s sitcoms that was horribly predictable, sugary-sweet, and much of the plot revolved around David Cassidy's fluffy hair. And yet, I loved it, right down to the sappy song they played at the end of every episode. If you, too, are a closet fan of The Partridge Family, here's your chance to catch a mini-reunion of the singing family. David Cassidy plays David Gallagher on the ABC Family show Ruby & The Rockits. Shirley Jones -- who played his mom on The Partridge Family -- will once again play that role on Ruby.
Ok, here's where things get complicated. In real life, Jones is Cassidy's stepmother. She's also mom to his co-star and brother Patrick Cassidy, who plays Patrick Gallagher on Ruby. Meanwhile, David's brother Shaun Cassidy serves as executive producer, and brother Ryan is the show's set decorator.
Now if we could just get Danny Bonaduce and Susan Dey to guest star as traveling musicians passing through town in a colorful bus, a whole lot of lovin' is what they'd be bringin'!

The Partridge Family wasn't cheesy, and it wasn't sugary-sweet. And their music wasn't sappy! Did you ever even watch it? The show, unlike the Brady Bunch, dealt with more grounded issues such as racism, 70s feminism and even had the family crossing picket lines to perform at a seedy club. There was even an episode where Danny shop lifted. These are hardly themes that make up surgary sweet sitcoms. And to write off their music by classifying it as sappy is more than a little condenscending. Their albums charted and featured some of the best studio musicians and singers on record. My point Jane, is give respect where its due.

I loved Patridge Family & Brady Bunch. I even had a few hairs back in those days and the B-9 mole on my 4-head was the size of a pea back then. Now my brain is that size. My wrinkle faced wife had wrinkles back then, but a few thousand less. I'll be watching for sure.

Um, and did YOU not read the part where the author said:

PFfan - C'mon, get happy! Seriously, I loved The Partridge Family, but I still think it was predictable and sweet, even with some of the heavier storylines. You're probably right that at the time, it covered some intense stuff. Maybe I'm too embedded in the Sons of Anarchy/ Rescue Me/Sopranos shows of the modern age.

The Partridge Family was my must-see TV when I was a kid - the music was happy, the family was pretty and it was just feel good TV. I've recently watched it again. You know what? I still enjoy it! It has some cute laugh out loud moments and in any decade, my eyes will never tire of a young David Cassidy on screen. Yeah, the show is predictable but it's not sugary-sweet. As PFfan stated, the story lines revolved around a lot more than Keith Partridge's hair (as gorgeous as it was)! The songs aren't sappy, they're well-crafted toe-tapping tunes that were unjustly labeled "bubblegum". And now, as an adult, I can truly appreciate David Cassidy's sultry vocals. I hope that when my daughter hits her tween years, there will be a nice, light and innocent show like The Partridge Family on TV to entertain her.
There's no need to hide our affection for this iconic show. It captured our young hearts with a blend of catchy music and family-friendly comedy. Where's the shame in that?
I saw clips of the Ruby & The Rockits episode in question. If anyone is expecting Shirley Partridge to show up, they'll be disappointed but Shirley Jones as Grandma Gallagher is a hoot.

I am a classically trained pianist. To my ears, the Partridge family music (my niece was a fan) was no better nor worse than other pop music of its time. Situate your subject properly before you critique it. It helps.

I loved the Partridge Family! I appreciate today's progress and creativity. However, the Partridge Family time, was a time when innocence was still respected, loved and appreciated. I miss those days! Most of the shows today are violent, overly sex-up and mind numbing! Thanks Partridge for the better years!

I am almost 51. People our age are going to say that music was better in the 70's, then it is now. I guess it is a generation thing.

I was a teenager of the 70s and yes I think we had the best music but so does my 20 year son (whose band plays a lot of 70s music). I work with guys who are a few years older then he who tell me all the time that we had the best music in the 70s. So I guess it isn't a generation thing!

Anyone remember that hilarious "Drew Carey Show" episode where Danny Bonaduce played Shirley Jones' son? Now that was pretty cool!
