Yes, it's true. The Jews do control the media. Okay, maybe not in the purest sense of the word, but they exhibit enough influence on the medium to move the time of the Yankees versus Red Sox game from 8 PM to 1 in the afternoon on September 27. This was done to accommodate the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.Considering that Rep. Anthony Weiner, the man who wrote the letter to the Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, is a Congressman from New York, I can see an ulterior motive in his suggestion of the move. Undoubtedly the Congressman didn't want to miss a second of his favorite team against their arch rivals (and I doubt he's a Red Sox fan).
A serious bullet has been dodged. This conflict could have led to potential civil war within many Jewish households on the East Coast. Thank you for your consideration Congressman, and thank you MLB.

The game wasn't moved to 1pm for TV purposes; it was moved because of Yankees fans who will attend the game here in New York. And this game was originally scheduled for 1pm, only to have ESPN claim it.
FYI, the NFL previously moved the kickoff of a Jets game from 4:15 to 1:00 for the same reason.

Yes, but generally Christians are not restricted from watching TV on Christmas if they want to. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, and observant Jews are meant to spend the day fasting and reflecting. Watching a baseball game would be off limits.

You know, it's not even the Jews run the media joke that bothered me, personally. It's a common enough joke, and I've been known to throw it around myself from time to time with various things.
I think it was the entire last paragraph, starting with "a serious bullet has been dodged." It just rubs me the wrong way...the tone of this blog entry (I refuse to call it an article) has an edge to it that's pretty insulting.

I think Brad's assessment is pretty accurate. Who doesn't have someone in their family who'd rather watch football than go to church on Sundays? It seems like it would be a similar issue. Yom Kippur may be the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, but everyone observes it differently.

I mean, should people start making fun of Christians for celebrating their holiest day on Easter? And when the upset Christians respond that we're mocking your most solemn holiday, we'll just say, "Oh, come on, get over it! We're just joking about the death and resurrection of your God. Lighten up, it not even like all Christians celebrate Easter."
Next spring, something tells me when different eateries are offering fish specials on friday, this jerk won't post an article about how they're bending to the wishes of Christians... that Christians own the means of global food production... or anything stupid like that.

Yeah, sure, it might have been. And yeah, sure, some people might take these things too seriously. Then again, it's been several thousand years since any Christians were rounded up and slaughtered because of their religion and the small differences....... Particularly ownership and control of certain industries.
Sure, it was a joke here that Jews control this or that, but was it a joke in Mein Kampf? That was the whole basis for the Final Solution, that Jews were unfairly controlling the wealth of Europe. Never mind that they had the wealth because the Catholic church prevented christians from loaning money, and thus they made money for centuries because they weren't thusly restricted.
The point is, throwing around comments like that isn't appropriate, joking or not. Some people are too stupid to get the joke, number 1, and number 2, this was the exact sort of rhetoric that resulted in 6,000,000 people being killed. "Oh, the jews unfairly influence X."
That you don't get that is sad... maybe put down the remote and pick up a history book now and then.

Hank Greenberg who was anything but religious decided not to play on Yom Kippur. Of course this is a lot different but I don't think anyone should get jokey about Jews and the media. That's bad talk even in jest. In any case here's a poem about Greenberg and him not playing on Yom Kippur by Edgar Guest:
