When Peter Jennings passed away and Bob Woodruff was injured, one of the names that popped up as a replacement on ABC World News was Diane Sawyer. Now, a couple of years later, that's actually coming true.ABC has announced that Charles Gibson will step down as anchor of the show in January. Sawyer will take over for him. Of course, that means that Sawyer will step down from her hosting gig on Good Morning America. No, I don't think there's any chance that Gibson will switch places with her and go back to GMA, but who the heck knows (ABC is using the word "retires"). Gibson does say that he wants to continue working with ABC News in some way.
So we have two big stories here: two women as network news anchors (Sawyer and Katie Couric at CBS) and the question of who will replace Sawyer in the morning. Or maybe they'll just stick with three hosts/co-hosts (Robin Roberts, Chris Cuomo, and Sam Champion). Who do you think should take over on GMA?

Do the 3 network news anchors matter anymore? All the commercials in those shows seem to be targeted at people 50 years and older. I didn't think advertisers cared about that market at all. Are there still people who rely on the nightly network news shows for their information? About 20 minutes stuffed with reports that, on the outside, last about 2 minutes each? It's hard for me to believe, and I'm closer to that 50+ age group than I'd like to admit.

Robin Roberts should be the main host. And Chris Cuomo and Sam Champion are in their late 30s so they want to keep that youthful look with the hosts on Good Morning America. That elder 50ish male host/young 35-yr old female host concept that worked in the '80s doesn't work I liked Diane Sawyer but she needs to move to a higher level with the evening news anchor. Now there will be TWO women competing against Brian Williams now in January 2010! It will be interesting!

I never watch ABC News. Sometimes accidentally watch CBS Evening News if I am watching the local 6 PM news and forget to switch to NBC with Brian Williams.
However, I will check out ABC now. Diane Sawyer would be great to watch.
