(S02E11) "I am gonna kick that bitch's evil ass out of my gran's house, and then you are gonna shoot her." Sookie to Lafayette, about Maryann
Well, they didn't make us wait, and picked up with True Blood right where we left off last week, with Bill walking in on the vampire queen, played deliciously by Evan Rachel Wood. And ... is the vampire queen a lesbian? There were certainly some sexual overtones with her sucking blood out of the girl's leg, and then later saying, "I haven't enjoyed sex with men since the Eisenhower administration." Then again, she did ask Bill if he wanted to have sex, and he politely declined. He also declined her suggestion that he feed on the girl.
"What gives you the right to say no to the femoral blood of a good woman?" she asks. "You know what your problem is, William? You're a snob. Tiny, tiny souls. Or penises. Or both."
Meanwhile, poor Jessica. Losing Hoyt after she just couldn't take it anymore and went after Hoyt's mom's neck. Hoyt is not amused, even though his spellbound mom says, "I actually enjoyed that." That boy needs to cut the apron strings there.
Loved seeing Lafayette cuff Tara with his purple fur handcuffs, then the interior of his car decked out with purple/animal print decor. I'm quite sick of Tara at this point, though. Here's my recap of Tara: "Let me rescue Eggs ... whine whine whine ... get away from me ... whine whine whine ... that doesn't work on me anymore ... whine whine whine ... [SMACK!] ..." I was sort of glad that Maryann smacked her.
It appears that someone major dies at the end of the next episode (the finale), and I'm really hoping it's Tara. That wouldn't bother me at all. But it certainly was creepy when Lafayette envisioned Eric in Mrs. Thornton's dress, pointing the gun at him. Poor Lafayette.
I continue to be amused by the Jason-Sam-Andy shenanigans, and Jason saying, "Guys, I read a book about this. This is Armageddon. This is the oral history of the zombie war. We need weapons. Lots of 'em." Then he brings up his leadership conference and paramilitary training, right before he runs smack into a tree. What a dolt. But a loveable dolt.
Those kids of Arlene's are cute as the dickens, asking for "Vampire Bill," and being awed by Eric's fangs. Sam's tender side magnified itself when he was taking care of them as Arlene continued her dive off the deep end.
Other fun stuff:
- The conversation between Jason and Andy about Sam and beastiality.
- The "Sorry, We're Dead" sign on the Fangtasia door.
- Hoyt watching wrestling on TV.
- "Here, chickie, chickie" - Lafayette leading Arlene and Terry away from Sookie's house with drugs.
- Eric calling the kids "tiny humans" and Pam saying how happy she was never to have had any kids.
- Eric can fly!
- Ewww ... fingers being cut off as a "present" for Maryann. Or the God. Or something.
- The vampire queen's lineup of people, then forcing Bill to feed on a young guy and play Yahtzee with her in her movie star palace.
- Hmmm ... Sookie's cousin is hanging with the vampire queen.
- The vampire queen suggesting that Bill and Eric have sex and get it over with, and she'll watch.
- Eric and Bill facing off outside the vamp queen's palace, and Bill threatening to tell her that Eric is forcing humans to sell vampire blood for him, unless he stays away from Sookie.
- Andy and Jason's talk in the pickup, and Jason saying why he's such a good catch: "I watch a lot of porn, I learn stuff."
- The vampire queen explaining to Bill about the Maenad's powers: "Never underestimate the power of blind faith," she says. "It can manifest in ways that bend the laws of physics or break them entirely."
- Sookie getting a text message from Bill - five hours late. "I'm getting a new phone as soon as Eric pays me."
- Whoa! I did not see that giant egg coming at the end, though I suspected that Lafayette might fall under her spell.
I'll leave you with this:
Sookie: "How's your leg?"
Lafayette: "Better than ever."
Sookie: "How'd that happen?"
Lafayette: "Eric made me drink his motherfuckin' blood is how that happened."
Sookie: "Me, too! He tricked me."
Lafayette: "Somebody needs to slap that bitch."
Sookie: "I have."
Lafayette: "Well, look at you..."

Please, PLEASE kill Tara. I can't take her nonsensical, overacting anymore. Does anyone actually care about her anymore? Even her magically self-correcting shoulder strap (while handcuffed) was enough to make me want to change the channel last night.
P.S. Bonus points to Mr. Ball if he can find a way to take out Tara's mom as well. Some gene pools are beyond redemption.

I am sick of the Maryann storyline. I feel like its a dumbed-down plot for the masses, and it's made Tara's character into a complete idiot.

Up until now I've been a loyal True Blood fan. Frankly, I've found the last two shows to be sluggish and difficult to endure. IMO the recent story lines have not been funny and are just plain stupid. Have they changed writers or something? The only characters I still find remotely entertaining are Sookie and Sam. I plan to stick around for the season finale, but if it's as crappy as the last two shows then I won't be tuning in for next season.

IMO the story lines on the last 2 episodes of True Blood have drastically declined. My husband and myself have found them to be sluggish, dumb and not at all funny. What's happened? Have they changed writers or something? I hope more thought went into the production of the upcoming finale or I won't be tuning in next season.

The books are WAY better than these last few episodes. The Maryann part of the book didn't last this long, it simply cannot carry the show this far. It was a sub-plot in the books, not the main one. *sigh*
The books sold well for a reason, and the writers need to stick to them a bit more closely. :)

I did not like last night's episode. The Queen could have been so much more than she was- scary, old, creepy, etc. Are we supposed to believe she is running the whole show guarded by the MEN IN BLACK? It felt too campy.
I liked the kids around Eric- little snacks. What is Sam doing running around Bon Temps when the whole town is looking for him?
Why did Sookie lay on a filthy floor with Mike? Why not bash him in the head before you get dirty?
This episode felt silly and poorly written.
Getting so close to the finale, it feels stale.

Agreed -- last night's ep was very slow and hard to watch. Found myself fast-forwarding through a large portion of it.
I enjoy Michelle Forbes' performance (she certainly delivers), but yes -- the MaryAnn/Maenad plot has gone on a bit too long.
As far as Evan Rachel Wood -- have to disagree with the review on her performance. Given she was playing 'Vampire Queen' -- clearly someone of age -- I found the character immature and insipid.

Last night I felt the same thing. I keep telling myself this isn't the queen we got to know during the books but my girlfriend pointed something out to me. This was before we met her in the books and she was described as being a different person before certain things set off the plot of book 3. I can only assume this was a chance to see the change ourselves instead of second hand.

I believe the Queen is suppose to be like 16 years old, definitely turned before she became an adult. Hence her immaturity, playing games, wanting to have fun, etc.

The Vampire Queen was a teenager when she was turned hence her immaturity, playing games (board games and head games), having fun, being totally ridiculous - though she is smart, old - she mixed her youth and old age rather well I thought. I think Evan Rachel Wood did a good job playing the Queen.

In the book the Vampire Queen was a teenager. Several thousand years old, but a teenager none the less.

It looked like Jessica tied to the tree, which I really hope I am wrong as her character is fun. I agree Tara is really tiresome in this season.
Perhaps her asking Sookie why she wasn't allowed to risk herself for her man is foreshadowing her death.

I hated Tara last season, but started to like her this season. That is, up until last night. I really wouldn't mind seeing her leave the show.

I'm with everyone here - Die! Tara, Die! I really liked her in season one and the beginning of season two. Her cynicism, crassness, everything. Now she is a stupid, whiny, annoying baby. I don't care about what spell she maybe under. I hope she kicks the bucket in the final episode - seeing the Tara doesn't play a major character in the books.
All it took was a punch from Mary Ann to change her back? Yet getting pushed around by Lafayette and Tara getting so angry over being handcuffed not getting to her man - you would think that would send her over the edge and turn back into a zombie.
What is with the egg? Was there an egg in the books somewhere? That is just plain weird, even for this show. As much as I love the show, the writers may have lost me with the egg.
Excluding the egg and Tara - I love the show.

No one seems to be mentioning a few key plot developments:
- How does Bill, a vampire with no political power, just a regular vampire, manage to get audience with a queen so easily and intimately?
- Bill seemingly knew that Sookie's cousin was Sophie Ann's partner, but warns her not to get in contact with her family. How did he know, and why should she not get in contact with Sookie?
Other than that...people complain about the show not following the books, yet everyone loves Lafayette. He would be dead by now if they stayed true to the book.
If they didn't carry on with Maryann's storyline as much as they did, would anyone really have any bearing as to what's going on once Sookie gets home from Dallas? No.
I think most of you people want to complain and feel superior.

Sookie's cousin did not know that Gran was murdered. And the way Bon Temp is right now, its not the best of times to get back in contact with Sookie. That and Sookie might get a little freaked out that her cousin is owned by the Queen. IMO, Bill wants to keep Sookie away from as many vampires as possible.

In the books, Bill was sent to attach himself to Sookie for the Queen to make use of her psychic abilities after Hadley told the queen about her cousin. So if they follow that plot line, it would stand to reason that Bill would know who she was and would not want her to talk to Sookie to reveal why he really came to Bon Temps.
Bill being on a secret mission from the Queen would also explain why he was allowed a private meeting, and (although nobody but me seems to have noticed) the reason the Queen mentions that Sookie is fine before Bill mentions says anything about her. How else would she know about Bill's relationship with Sookie?

He knows who she was because she said something about "my cousin Sookie." And she was told not to contact them because as was previously mentioned, she has no idea that Gran has been killed.

Suddenly this show is lame and who cares if she's gay... really after that episode that is your big question. Weak and weaker. Oh and Entourage sucks now too, time to switch back to Showtime for Dexter.
