It's not a permanent gig, but it seems like he might wish it is. According to Michael Ausiello, Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) has signed to appear on Chuck as the new leader of Operation Bartowski. This puts him in the role of mentor to Chuck, which is the good news. The bad news is he'll also be a rival for Sarah's affection. But what does this mean for Casey? Where will he be during all of this? Why do I have to wait until March for the new season of Chuck, NBC? Hey, make me a deal. If one of your new shows tanks, or if The Jay Leno Show fails to deliver, bring back Chuck earlier. How about October. That works for me.
Why intentionally put a show on the shelf for that long, anyway? Especially if that show is still trying to grow its audience. Would it hurt you to put on some Chuck reruns once in awhile? Don't you get tired of all those Law & Order repeats all over the schedule? People love lighter fare in the summertime.

I know one of the actors on the show and he said they've already filmed a couple episodes, and that if a new show does tank, there is a good chance Chuck will come back on earlier.

You know, this seems like a real step down for Routh. Of course, he hasn't had a lot of offers either.

Jimmy, Routh hasn't had a lot of offers because he has all the warmth of a popsicle and the acting chops of a plank of wood. My dog could have done a better job than he did as Superman.
But we've all heard about the budget cuts and obviously a D-lister like Routh is all the show can afford for guest stars now.

I suspect that NBC is purposely shelving the show for so long to intentionally kill interest in it. All the networks are too busy looking for the next "smash" hit that will be fast and cheap to make.

As much as we want it to premiere in the fall, Chuck is going to have the benefit of being heavily promoted during the winter Olympics in February. Olympics always do better when they're in the US or Canada, and this one is in Vancouver.
For 2 weeks in February, all that America is going to be watching (besides Idol and LOST) is the Olympics, and viewers will be bombarded with commercials championing the return of Chuck. This is the best promotion for any bubble show, and we're going to get it!
