Don Lipp passed away last Thursday at age 70. No, I didn't recognize the name either, but as I was reading his obituary I had this incredible flashback to the mid-70s and one of the game shows he produced: The Moneymaze! (I've seen it spelled two ways - The Moneymaze and The Money Maze.)I remember I was excited when it premiered, because it had this outrageously large, complex (and probably expensive) maze set. Couples would compete against other couples, and when it got to the maze part one spouse would guide the other through the maze on the way to a big money prize.
I bring this up not only because Lipp's death made me remember a TV show from my youth, but reading about the show I realized there were a lot of things I didn't remember. For example, the show was hosted by Nick Clooney, father of George, journalist, and now a host on AMC. The announcer on the show was Alan Kalter, who is now the announcer on The Late Show with David Letterman. And the show was produced, in part, by Dick Cavett.
Now this is the part of the post where I would embed a YouTube video of the show. Alas, I can't find any video from it. However, here's the Wikipedia page on the show, and here's another page that describes the show in detail. Mark Evanier says that George Clooney talked about the show on Letterman's show a while back and that all but two of the episodes have been erased.

I remember the Money Maze because I lived (and live) in Cincinnati and this was supposed to be Nick Clooney's big break. Turned out being George's father was a bigger break...

Even better was the companion show, The Big Showdown, with Jim Peck as host. You can find an episode on YouTube. The front game was original and ingenious, and was a "knowledge" quiz. It left the air all too soon.
