FOX hasn't made an official announcement yet, but Paula Abdul has announced on her Twitter page that she is leaving American Idol.She says that she's decided to leave the show "with sadness in my heart." She also says that she loves the fan support, especially in the past month. Now we have to all speculate on what the show will do about a fourth judge, hire someone to replace Abdul or perhaps just go back to being a three judge show, with Kara pretty much taking Abdul's slot.
Of course, this could be the ULTIMATE negotiating tactic, actually announcing that you are leaving the show. Though if I was FOX (and if humans could indeed be TV networks), I'd be ticked if that was the case.
Update: FOX has confirmed that Abdul will be leaving the show and while they are "saddened," they wish her the best, calling her a tremendous talent.

Yes, yes let the flaming begin but I hate this show...and the networks that have cancelled dozens of great shows in its path because they couldn't compete with AI's numbers.

Rock on. I skipped the first season, and tried watching the 2nd and 3rd but could barely make it through the tryouts. At least with the Last Comic Standing tryouts, the people are TRYING to be funny. Some of the AI people really thought they were good, and I felt sorry for them when they were so bad and always said, "But my friends say I'm good." Of COURSE your friends do - that's what makes them FRIENDS.

I think with each passing drunk and rambling year, she was becoming a liability. New Judge (aka Kara) was always brought in as her replacement. Perhaps if Paula had gotten better and New Judge didn't work out, Paula would have stayed. But she was just as annoying this year as any other year and New Judge got better as the season progressed. The show will do fine without her!

Good riddance. I mean full credit to her for the first few seasons acting as the "kind" voice to counter Simon, but "kind" quickly turned into "mindnumbingly insane" with each successive season.
Now... can she take Seacrest with her?

I am glad she's not coming back. But I think her move is the wisest of all of them. She's jumping this ship before it goes down. Idol is no longer the amusing then competitive show it used to be and is fast becoming something not worth watching.
Paula has spent the last several years of Idol driving everyone crazy with her antics and disjointed praise of even the worst of the singers. Its time for her exit.

I'm not sure this will hurt the show at all. If it was Cowell, then maybe there might be concern. Kara was not exactly a great addition to the show (especially in terms of writing that crap song), but now that we're back to the 3-judge format the show will be so much better.

Nobody thinks that this will effect Simon the most? Paula was Simons setup man, they both played very well off each other... IMO this will leave Simon with less than half of his normal banter.. Bad move for AI, I wont be watching next season..

I stopped watching the show because of her. She was pointless, but even more than that, she was a cheater. The world at large can pretend that loser and she weren't screwing around and that she didn't advantage him unfairly within the competition, but she obviously did.
Thank God she's gone.

I think Fox is making a big mistake. I for one, will not be watching the show without her. Kara just plain sucks and she adds nothing that Randy has not already said. I love Paula, she was rambling at times but at least it was entertaining. I think she really stepped it up last season and her insights were on point, unlike Kara's. I've been an AI fan since day one, but will not watch without Paula.
