If you watched the finale of The Next Food Network Star, you know that homemaker, non-pro cook Melissa D'Arabian was the big winner. Hopefully, you really, really like Melissa and not just the pilot she created for the competition, Kitchen Survival Guide, because Food Network has shucked the concept. That's right, less than 24 hours after cleaning up the confetti, Ms. D'Arabian was handed a new show with a new angle. The title will be Ten Dollar Dinners with Melissa D'Arabian.
Catchy, don't you think? Actually, in these recessionary times, it probably makes sense to do a show about how to stretch a dollar. However, isn't that what Sandra Lee is doing with Sandra's Money Saving Meals? Well, I guess Melissa's show won't be exactly like Sandra's, but with the catch phrase, "Four people, ten bucks, infinite possibilities," I don't think Melissa will be shopping at Whole Foods for ingredients. Forget about seafood or organic veggies.
It's too bad that Kitchen Survival Guide didn't get a shot. If there's one thing Melissa was really good at during the competition, it was coming up with clever tips for the kitchen. She had a way to remember the right way to create a ratatouille that sounded brilliant. Even her four-step chicken seemed instructive.
My guess is that by Sunday at 12:30 PM when Ten Dollar Dinners premieres, the wizards at Food Network will have found a way to package all of Melissa's homilies into a budget conscious 30-minute show. She'll then have five more episodes to make it work. See, the thing about winning The Next Food Network Star is how to keep the show on the air. Only Season Two winner Guy Fieri has really emerged as a big-time presence on the network.

I liked Melissa fron the start. She is smart, savvy, and fun to watch. I will watch her show. Jeffrey looked like a car salesman trying to cook. Melissa is believable.
How will she do a show with 4 kids? OMG
Good luck, Melissa

I'm not liking this idea. It's almost as if they had this idea in the wings and decided Melissa would fit into it so they gave her the title of next foodnetwork star.
Don't get me wrong, I like Melissa and was rooting for her over Jeffrey, but this is just a tired idea. The network already as Sandra Lee's show plus another one called Five Ingredient Fix, so how is this anything new? I hope the network doesn't squander Melissa's innate talent.
While it's true Fieri has fulfilled the potential of what this reality show was meant to accomplish for the network more than any other winner, both Amy Finley's and Aaron McCargo's shows were and are successful. The network wanted Amy to return but she chose not to and according to Bob Tuschman, McCargo's show is one of their more popular weekend series; although, I don't know why. McCargo has zilch in the way of TV presence.

I am curious how the network is going to make meals for just ten dollars that will stretch for four full grown adults.
Sandra Lee's budget show is anything but informative , and almost all the "tips" she gives are both well known and not really tips.
I vaguely remember seeing a show , briefly, called ten dollar meals or something similar on FN once before. It didn't last and really couldn't produce meals that would cost under 12 dollars. (no matter what, if it's "ten dollar meal" it can go as high as 14 dollars in different markets across america)
I'm pretty sure the whole ten dollar concept won't include basic pantry items in the price, so things like milk butter eggs and spices won't be included in the price of the meal. In fact I would bet the ten dollars is only the cost of the protein of the meal.
Which is both misleading and frustrating.
Every budget conscious food preparer who watches would love to spend under 100. a week on groceries. But in this economy that won't happen. So this should be interesting to see if they can carry it off or if the concept flops due to the current economic situation.
Still waiting to see what they do with Jeffery. And I get the feeling we've not seen the last of Debbie.

I am not excited about the new show that Melissa will be hosting. Although I liked her during the competition, I was more excited about Jeffrey's Ingredient Smuggler concept. I doubt that I will watch Melissa's show on a regular basis.

Rachael Ray's magazine has a feature about $10 meals, and she occasionally uses them on her daytime talk show too. I can't help but wonder if FN is just going to reuse those recipes...

Melissa's show is just another version of Sandra Lee and Rachel Ray. Too bad you didn't go one step further with Jeffrey. His show would have been quite different. People would have turned in to him. We already have enough shows on quick and easy chicken. Give me a break. Go out of the box the next time.

I think this is a big mistake. I agree with the comments below about the $10 being over-done already and also misleading (doesn't include cost of pantry staples...). I don't like Sandra Lee's cost-saving show- there's nothing appealing about it nor informative and it doesn't seem to suit "her". I'm really shocked that Jeffrey didn't win. When Melissa won, I accepted it and thought "well, she was informative..."-- I won't be tuning in to the $10 Dollar Debacle...I can't help but agree with the writer below that it sounds as if FN had this show in mind all along and chose the "winner" based on who would fit the niche. As for Debbie...ugh...please, let this be the last of her.

I think the right person won and I also think the network should give her a little more leeway in the meals she prepares, she has the personality and and is a great cook. I look forward to seeing her and seeing what she comes up with.
