So You Think You Can Dance: 2 of 8 Voted Off

Katie Holmes on So You Think You Can Dance(S05E19) This was the gala 100th episode celebration of So You Think You Can Dance. As such, we got a nice video montage of the entire series to this point. It was great seeing some familiar faces again, as well as a very few that I actually forgot about. We even got a quick shot of first season host Lauren Sanchez, the Brian Dunkelman of SYTYCD.

GROUP NUMBER
"One," A Chorus Line

(Contemporary, Mia Michaels) Well, I didn't really like that one at all. A bit of a hot mess all over the stage. With the mirrors and camera angles chosen, it was more confusing than anything else.

SPECIAL GUEST
Katie Holmes - "Get Happy"

Well, this will certainly go down as one of the most hyped guest appearances ever on the show. But how did it go?

Honestly, it was pretty disappointing. It didn't appear to have actually been live on our stage, which is irritating. And there was a serious lack of dancing on the part of Mrs. Cruise. Ultimately, the entire number was a little boring. The opening part in the street was jarringly different from the rest of the dance, and the whole thing just didn't come together very well. Next time, give me another encore of a former great dance from the first 99 episodes.

EMMY DANCE ENCORES
Jaimie Goodwin & Hokuto "Hok" Konishi
"The Chairman's Waltz," Memoirs of a Geisha (Wade Robson)

Speaking of those encores, "The Hummingbird and the Flower" still stands as one of my favorite dances of the series. Hok was a powerhouse hip-hop dancer, and while he didn't excel as some others have in other genres, Robson choreographed a piece perfectly for his own style within this contemporary piece. I think this may have been the best example of two different dancers in two different styles melding into a beautiful singular piece.

Heidi Groskreutz & Travis Wall
"Calling You," Celine Dion (Mia Michaels)

Another great dance, which I guess stands to reason considering the Emmys and all; "The Bench" wasn't as smooth this time around. Either that, or my rose-colored memories of season two have painted perfection where there were flaws then, as well. It was the under-the-bench movement that was a little off tonight, but otherwise it's still one of the best uses of a prop we've ever seen; right up there with the boardroom table and the door.

Various and Many
"Ramalama (Bang Bang)," Roisin Murphy (Wade Robson)

It's really hard to choreograph a big group number week after week, especially when you're dealing with dancers of different skill levels in whatever style you're working in. Robson did a great job of pulling together a piece that was both visually arresting and unique enough to be memorable. Sizzling with style, the only disappointment was that our favorite former dancers were buried in make-up to make them almost unrecognizable.

SOLOS
Kayla Radomski - "The Moment I Said It," Imogen Heap
Oh Kayla, don't be so stressed out. We still love you.

Jason Glover - "...Slowdance on the Inside," Taking Back Sunday
Wait a minute, are these the same solos? The music is the same. Hmmm...

Janette Manrara - "Seduces Me," Celine Dion
Okay, Janette's solo actually regressed from the impressive performance she gave last night. Somebody sweating the results?

Brandon Bryant - "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That," Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Again, largely the same, but I lost count trying to count the number of times he spun around.

ELIMINATED
So it's the end of the road for Janette, as I predicted. Evan, however, has a larger fan-base than I anticipated. As such, with Brandon in the bottom two instead of him, my second-to-last pick Jason was the one to feel the lack of American love. So I was pretty damned close.

Kayla, Ade, Melissa, Evan, Jeanine and Brandon. One of them is going to win this thing. I'm still not as excited about any of them as I was about some of the dancers from last season, but they are brilliant.
