"I'm not no bitch!" - Joseph
Yeah, me not no bitch either. Me talk good! This might be the oddest bunch of Hell's Kitchen contestants yet. So much food sent out raw. Why? You know that Chef Ramsay is just going to send it back and you'll have to redo it so you're not hurrying up the process and getting food served. Everyone is arguing, and there are more threats of violence in this episode than in other seasons (including one to Ramsay - cliffhanger!).
The show seems to be a lot of BS now (Ramsay swearing because that's his thing, contestants picked because of controversy or lack of skills, the editing, etc) but it's still entertaining. What did you think? (Video of the cliffhanger after the jump.)

It's unfortunate that it's become "The Real World: Hell's Kitchen", but dammit, I think it was one of the most entertaining - and at the same time, most frustrating - episode that I've seen. Probably because the group is such a joke.
But then again, it is only the season opener, and as more people get weeded out, it'll slowly get back to "normal". But I think the show's suffering from the casting folks putting in more and more "crazies" in the mix...I guess that'll happen as you go further and further into a reality show's run.
The most frustrating part is just how there's a huge lack of respect for Chef Ramsay and for the "high-end" restaurant experience in general. Then again, it's probably representative of society in general, where they don't "get it " that a) regardless of his attitude, Ramsay's one of the most acclaimed chefs in the world and b) the "prize" is being a head chef at a high-end restaurant, where there's a need for at lesat a slight bit of decorum (as with any decent restaurant, not just high-end).
We'll have to suffer thru the psychos ("not no bitch guy", the chick who got kicked off), the meatheads (Texas guy), the lazy, apathetic, clueless people (Lovely and FrenchToast/Salmon freezer girl), and the people that are just in over their heads (diner guy and the culinary store guy who looks like the winner of Project Runway a few seasons ago).
After that, it'll come down to a somewhat legit competition with the true standouts, like Robert, the blad guy, the Gavin DeGraw hat guy, Tennille, and the bossy girl with the big teeth....
(i still have to get some names down obviously) :)

Huge lack of respect for Ramsay? I think I also have no respect for that narcissistic bastard. It's about time someone stands up to him and gives him what's coming to him. I really only watch this show to see if one of the contestants will fight back, it almost happened in Season 3 when Vinny was getting ready to punch him, but Rock put a stop to it. (damn you, Rock!) I thought at least one of the women would have slapped Ramsay by now.
To be fair, Joseph looks like one of those guys that's just looking for a fight, with somebody, anybody! The producers were stupid for even casting this guy, anyone can see that he's a ticking time bomb.
Regardless of how many many Michelin stars Ramsay has bullied his way into, the way he treats people, not just on TV but in real life (like when he called Australian celebrity Tracy Grimshaw a "lesbian" and a "pig"), to me that negates any supposed culinary expertise he has. Throwing food in people's faces and screaming at them doesn't show "passion" for cooking, it shows that he is just a schoolyard bully who needs to get straightened out by an even bigger bully. Ramsay is a fraud, how can anyone respect this piece of crap?
If Joseph ends up in jail over this, and all the Ramsay-haters on the internet were to pitch in a dollar, I bet we could get him out. FREE JOSEPH!

yep it's gotten ridiculous, but it's still better than watching paint dry.
I have to wonder if the cast has been encouraged to act out. The girl that got booted last nite (I called her crazy eyes cause that's all you saw she clammed up when she got cornered ) should have gone.
Lovely is definitely the Lacey of this season. So I predict she'll stay for at least three more episodes.
The contestants sign a no physical touching contract before they come on the show, (remember past season when someone wanted to do physical harm to someone and was reminded of that contract?)
So I think that's all posturing. I had to wonder about the Belgian flipping out... he's been through so many weird things with Ramsay I can't imagine he'd lose his cool with the cowboy.
I get the feeling the big "explosive" scene we're being led to watch for has nothing whatsoever to do with the emergency services crews that show.. I think somehow that's going to be one of the challenges.(if the place burned down or exploded at any point we would have seen it in the news. this IS pre recorded)
I wish Ramsay would do this show like he did the bbc show the F word, I like the way the groups compete to be part of his team at the restaurant, and I like the way he does the you don't like it you don't have to pay... but in america I get the feeling no one would pay just because they don't have to so maybe that wouldn't work.
I also like the way he goes off the restaurant site on that show , broadens the scope of the Ramsay personality.
Guess I'll wait to see who's next to leave, though I can predict culinary store guy will leave sooner than later. And whats with Robert coming back? He looks like he hasn't worked in a resturant for a while and his messups are confirming that.(again unless thats part of the whole setup of things)

It almost looks like this season is scripted.Sending that first guy home for nothing except getting Robert back was a little too hokey. As usual this group looks like a bunch of losers who couldnt hold down a chefs job anywhere. How are these people still able to aford smoking.I quit because it got to expensive!

I agree some of it looks scripted. Before Louie was even sent home, the announcer said that Ramsay had a plan for Bobby. So it was already decided that Ramsay was going to send someone home and they just looked for *any* reason to get rid of someone (what Louie did certainly wasn't worse than what a lot of contestants have done on the show).

Don't call him Bobby. He's Robert and he gets quite upset when you call him Bobby. It has to do with his relationship with his father.

People really seem to forget this is a Fox show. Every season they have shown less and less of the actual cooking and instruction and more of the reality show staples of random competitions, dramatic cuts and abrasive personalities. It's sad because looking back at the one season of UK Hell's Kitchen that Gordon did and in some respects the first season of the US show, the current version is literally nothing more than a trashy charicature which is a truly crude form of entertainment.
As wulfn1 pointed out, any of his shows not produced by Fox rely a lot less on the dramatic tension and bullshit (but still have plenty of swearing) and more on the business ethics required for a restaurant and the level of cooking required regardless of whether it's home cooking or at a professional establishment.
As for people whining about him being a bully, of course he is, with his background and the kind of culinary world he has worked in for the last 20 years, it's what he has always known and what has always produced the best chefs in the world. As for the truly unneccessary comments about Tracy Grimshaw it's just another one in a long line of competitive PR stunts that Gordon has been trained into thinking is the best way to keep himself spotlight by Fiona Lindsay.
If you actually think all people should be the same happy, love everybody equally selfless type of person you must live in a very narrow and dull world. The different kinds of people are the reason life is interesting and not every person in the world needs to be always nice to their workers to bring out the best in them. Gordon along with most good chefs throughout the world expect the best from their staff and in the heat of the kitchen and the moment will do and say anything to get that out of their staff. Ask any of the long term staff if they take it personally, ask them if they don't go and hang out with the same person that berates them, ask them if they respect them or not. The answer will generally be the same. The common goal and strive for perfection is just something certain types of driven people posess. So get off your high horse and find a better outlet to channel your sneering disgust into something useful.
(sorry for the long post)

The season preview showed one of the male cooks with cut fingers. That is most likely the medical emergency next week.
Why is Ramsey calling Robert a hero? His heart problem is most likely due to his obesity. He looks heavier now than he did last season, which probably means he's done nothing to enhance his health, and yes, he's still messing up as he did last time around. I, for one, was disappointed to see his sweaty self back again. Hope he leaves soon.

This show is the polar opposite of Top Chef. They really just pick anyone to be on this show. It is so bad that's it is funny. That's the only reason I watch it. Challenges aren't interesting, the "dinner" service is ridiculous, and the contestants are mostly inept. Yes they are contestants on a reality show, not chefs competing in an actually cooking contest. It's just absurd that any of these people would actually go on to run a restaurant. But it is hilarious in it's awfulness.

I used to be one of Hell's Kitchen's biggest defenders against people who questioned the purpose of the show when (endlessly) comparing it to Top Chef and all of that show's pretty artistry.
Until this premiere last night...
WTF? Are the show's producers frustrated with Gordon and deliberately messing with him? Who are these wackos/contestants? And since when does Hell's Kitchen feature a cage match?
And if they've added new items to the menu, let's see some of them being prepared, dammit!
Someone else mentioned BBC America's "The F Word," and I was shocked beyond all belief when I saw Gordon laughing and joking with his contestants. They actually showed some cooking on the show, and I'm still not sure if that's what this season of Hell's is ever going to get to (e.g. cooking).
I can't decide if I'll be able to watch this season, but next week's episode should determine it for me. I found the previous seasons more entertaining when he would blast the contestants into being consistent perfectionists, churning out the best Mushroom Risotto over and over throughout dinner service. I have no idea what is going on now, unfortunately.
Very sad. That's Fox for you...
