(S05E17) It's lady's night on So You Think You Can Dance. Nigel is in England getting an honorary doctorate. Not that it even matters that any judge is on tonight since this is America's first chance to axe competitors.Cat tells us that the show has gotten four Emmy nominations for choreography. I'm hoping that the "Mercy" or Argentine Tango routine win, because I'm in the group of fans that didn't see what was so good about "Bleeding Love."
Group Performance
"So Much Betta" - Janet Jackson - As if to justify the Asian theme, we're reminded that Wade and his Asian wife Amanda Robson choreographed the routine. It wasn't offensive or anything. On the contrary it was a very interesting routine that wasn't set to traditional Asian music. I love how Wade understands the dancers he was provided and let Melissa showcase some of her ballet skills.
The Bottom Two
Cat lines up all of the girls and eventually announced that Randi and Melissa were the bottom two. As for the guys, Kupono and Ade were in the bottom. It's odd seeing both Melissa and Ade in the bottom when they did really well together when they were partnered.
Season Six Preview
We're given a preview of 18-year-old Molly Gray or Mollie Grey, they never actually put her name up. It was her first eligible year. She seems like a beam of sunshine, but from what I saw the routine didn't match the music. Hopefully it will be fleshed out better next season.
Solos
Randi - "Dream" - A new outfit didn't change the style of the routine. Still the same as last night.
Kupuno - "Marina Gasolina" - His solo still needs help. There's quirky, but then he needs some technique to anchor a good solo.
Melissa - "Gabriel" - The performance seems slower than before, but the fun she had with Cat at the end was cute.
Ade - "Unchained Melody" - I was amazed by the power of his turns. It was great to watch again.
Musical Guest
Black Eyed Peas - "I Gotta Feeling" - I love the Black Eyed Peas, but this performance was horrible. What was Fergie doing with a baton? Probably covering up the fact that she is horrible live. The audio just didn't sound right. I switched back and forth between the high def and standard versions and both sounded like crap. I was also confused by the dancers in the back, especially the one woman who kept thunder clapping.
The Elimination
In no surprise Randi and Kupono went home. I feel as though Randi flew under the radar as Evan's partner, but it was long past due that Kupono went home. I will miss being jealous of his abs.
Next Week Mia Michaels and Ellen DeGeneres will both be judges for the 99th episode. As for the 100th episode, we'll see the return of at least three classic performances: The Bench, the Hummingbird and the Flower, and Ramalama (Bang Bang). I'm crossing my fingers that we could also see the return of Joshua or Katee from last season to do a current Emmy nomination. I doubt we are going to see Lacey, Dmitri, or Chelsie because of their involvement with Dancing with the Stars.

Whew! Finally we got rid of Kupono. And yes I totally agree regarding Randi. The only reason she wasn't eliminated sooner was because of Evan. People voted to support Evan and she just got lucky.
I was a little surprise to see Ade in the bottom. I think he's one of the better male dancers but I guess since Jason did so well on Wednesday and Evan's fans keep supporting him it should be expected.
Ade was the only one with a good solo last night. I'm kind of tired of seeing Melissa do the same ballet moves over and over again.....Yawn. Maybe she'll freak us out next week and do a Hip Hop solo.

I agree with america that the two that went home should have. Now it will be hard to decide as to who stays and who goes since the rest execpt for maybe one are all strong performers. Good luck to all of them.

I think the solo performances are critical but why make them so short? And why not provide the dancers with some choreography help in these solo routines? Their choreography is generally horrible, throwing their arms and legs around like my grandchildren do. They should have a challenging solo routine worthy of competition, to show off their skills, not the skills of the choreographer. The choreographer should not be grandstanding in solos. Without professional help in choreography, the 2 best make dancers will be gone too soon (Brandon & Ade). Evan's choreography is wonderful; his brother should join the staff.

I recall people saying that Sabra was "too cool for school." She apparently gained an attitude and probably won't go on SYTYCD on episode 100.
She did show up once for interviews (was it an E! THS? I don't remember), but I think her interaction with the show stops there.

Group Dance- It was too dark, and the costumes were too much, I thought it was sloppy and I was glad when it was over.
Bottom two girls- Randi I understand, has she gained wieght since she has been there? Melissa I dont understand but my husband said "its because she is older and the audience doesnt relate to her" that made sense somehow. Sad to see Randi go, but glad melissa stayed.
Bottom Two guys-Kupono i understand but ADE! what are people thinking? I was so glad kupono went home, but that was too close for comfort
Individual dances- all the same from the night before, but more subdued because they really didnt matter.
Black Eyed Peas- the audio was off, and Fergie with the fuzzy baton? I didnt get it was it some sort of dominatrix prop gone horribly wrong? I think they are fun and all but that performance sucked.
Ellen Degeneres as a judge? I CANNOT WAIT.
Oh and did you hear the LACK of enthusiasm when Cat announced that Katie Holmes was coming? could have heard a pin drop.

I agreed with who went home. Kupono wasn't completely horrible, but compared to the rest - he has a lot of growing to do and some weight lifting, so he can pick up girls without dropping them.
I was completely surprised that Ade was in the bottom. He is a great dancer, good looking, has personality, looks great in jeans ;-). I thought it would be Evan.
Randi's solo was better last night than on Wednesday. She fell out of a turn Wednesday - Thursday she seemed more in control of her dancing.
Melissa's solo need to have more. Maybe dress more like a sweet ballerina than a naughty one, because we have already had that.
Can't wait for next weeks dances.
Who cares if Kate Holmes is going to dance - it's not like she is a big name in the dancing world. Bring on the heavy hitter dancers and then I'll get all excited. Hopefully Tom Cruise isn't there, otherwise there will be a trillion cutaways from the dancing to see his stupid reaction. Worst yet, we will see him dancing!

i am not surprised that these two went home. i think that caitlyn should have been in the top ten. and kupono has a great personality but i think he should have never made as far as he did. i think we seen a lot more talented dancers go home before him. looking forward to next week show.

I guessed that it would Randi (don't really see a fan base for her) and either Kupono or Evan.
Melissa's problem, as I see it, is that her "unique" style is not all that unique. Jeanine and Kayla have just as good (maybe even better) technique as she does. The only thing she does have over them is that she wears pointe shoes. The judges (especially at the beginning) kept talking about how it was so great having a ballerina on the show - but at the end of the day, does it really matter? Contemporary ballet (which I would classify Melissa's style as being, not strictly classical) is not drastically different from contemporary.
The naughty ballerina schtick was old even at the beginning.
I'm not feeling huge enthusiasm for most of the dancers...
