(S02E04) "Evil is making the pre-medicated choice to be a dick." - Jason
TV Squad has THE smartest readers on the Web. I'm even more sure of that after reading the comments about last week's episode, "Scratches."
Nancy said Maryann appears to be a Circe, and Crystal backed her up, noting, "Most notably, Circe turned Odysseus' crew into swine, but she had the power to concoct potions and cast spells to turn humans into any animal, which we saw when she forced Sam to shape shift against his will. Inviting her victims to a sumptuous feast to dispense her "Circean poison" is her classic trap."
There's no doubt that's exactly what happened in last night's episode, with Tara's birthday feast, culminating in Maryann doing her shaky thing that caused everyone to act like animals, whether they were smearing food all over themselves or having mad sex. Perhaps Eggs impregnated Tara with ... something ... ? Maybe that's why he's called "Eggs." And what was up with Maryann clawing the earth, then having her hands grow those three long fingers? Is that a characteristic of a Circe?
Lots of other interesting stuff in this episode:
I never really thought about it, but maybe Lazarus WAS the first vampire. Or maybe Jesus, since he brought Lazarus back from the dead, as Jason noted, then rose from the dead and told the people, "Hey, y'all, drink my blood. It'll give you special powers." Nor did it ever occur to me that "evil" was so named because it was created by Eve.
I think we can all agree that Jason is about the dumbest guy on the planet right now. He's walking right into a nightmare with creepy Steve and Sarah Newlin. I was just about to write that no one in MY church acts like Sarah when she was barbecuing for Steve and Jason, but then realized that he was just fantasizing about her licking the beer bottle and doing a striptease. I feel better now. Not really, though.
But it'll be interesting to see where it all leads (remember, I haven't read the books), what with Eric on the hunt for Godrick, the vampire who apparently has been abducted by the Light of Day folks. And now that Jason is a "Soldier of the Sun," I'm sure he'll be knee deep in the Godrick business.
Jessica continues to amuse me with her turned-on fangs. But also sadden me when she told Bill and Sookie that she hadn't even been kissed by a boy when she was turned by Bill. Had to laugh when Bill yelled at Hoyt to get out and then said, "It's not her that I'm protecting, son." And told Jessica, "We established there was to be no hunting in this house." He's like everyone's dad now.
- I don't know what to think of Daphne and her scratches, especially now that she and Sam are headed down the path of no return. At least now we know that she knows what he is. At least, that's what she told him at the party.
- Sookie wanting to take Jessica to Dallas, so Bill could teach her how to walk the line between vampire and human. "Yes, because I've mastered that so well," he said.
- Bill, responding to Sookie's thought that Light of Day is a church and thus wouldn't send someone to abduct her: "Churches have done much, much worse throughout history," he said.
- I'm sure Eric has other reasons for wanting to find Godrick, besides wanting to keep everything in balance: "If the vampires don't get Godrick back, they'll start attacking people," he told Bill. But Eric doesn't seem like the kind of guy who wants to keep peace just for the sake of keeping peace.
- Lafayette feeding on Eric's blood in order to heal himself (let's not forget it's Eric who put Lafayette in that situation in the first place). But the act of Lafayette feeding was weirdly sexual, maybe because it's Lafayette. Or maybe because the act made him want to have sex with any and everything/one.
- Hmmm ... another mind-reader. Wonder what Sookie will do with this information ...
I look forward to reading your comments about this episode.

After two consecutive episodes that seemed relatively slow, last night's was a welcome change of pace. I couldn't believe an hour had passed when the show ended--as it should be.
My theory regarding Godric and Eric's apparent concern about his disappearance is that he is Eric's maker. Eric clearly has a great deal of respect for him but, as Bill pointed out, Eric owes him no fealty as he is just another sheriff. Eric has said multiple times now that Godric is twice as old as Eric, so we know Godric is old enough.
We know that vampires are unfailingly loyal to their makers, that they must follow their makers' orders, so Eric's response to Godric's situation could be very easily explained by the revelation that Godric was the one to turn him.

There's a difference between being loyal and being forced to obey. Jessica is not loyal to Bill, but she does have to listen to him "as his maker" and whatnot. She is never happy about it, though.
That being said, I agree with you about Godrick being Eric's maker. I'm sure after a thousand years or so loyalty does emerge.

Ok Well first off the two girls are wrong. Maryanne is a:
Maenad--In Greek mythology, Maenads were the female followers of Dionysus, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the retinue of Dionysus. Their name literally translates as "raving ones". Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by him into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication. In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh. During these rites, the maenads would dress in fawn skins and carry a thyrsus, a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped by a cluster of leaves, weave ivy-wreaths around their heads, and often handle or wear snakes. This is what she was in the books and if you remember in season one she was dressed like that when she first appeared in town.
2---In the book "Eggs" is a nickname. . his real name is Benedict... get it.... haha.. I have to say Charlaine Harris writing could be funny at times.
3--Lazarus was not the first vampire. The first vampire was a woman named Lilith. Here is the story of Lilith--
Lilith was the first vampire, and here is the story behind her.
When God a long long time ago had created the world, and the Garden of Eden, he created Adam, and at the same time he created Adams first wife, Lilith, out of dust - as he did with Adam. They were of the same material. There was a lot of trouble about her from the beginning. God and Adam wanted Lilith to be under them, to crawl, but she wanted to stand beside them and be equal. She denied to lie under Adam when mating. When they wouldn´t accept this, she went away from them, to the Earth. God sent 3 angels out to bring her back. They found her at the Red Sea, where she kept a lot of demons as her lovers, and she gave birth to over 100 demons each day. These demons were vampires, werewolfes and demons like them. So the angels told her, that she should come back to Eden. If she didn´t, they would kill her babies, her demons. But she told them, that even that was better than returning to the Garden. She stayed at the Earth, and God created Eve to Adam. Eve gave birth to Gods children, the common, the good, people in the world. Lilith gave birth to the vampires and demons. She promised then to kill children because the angels killed her babies. Only children with an amulet with the names of the three angels, wouldn´t be killed. Lilith then stole and killed the children and drank their blood, and it is bye this she was the first vampire in the world. She is mentioned in the Bible, Esaja 34:14.
Lilith was only the beginning. Her family grew quick and big, and spread through the whole world. In the ancient Rome they feared Lamia, who was Liliths little sister, a femme fatale who got young men to fall in love with her, and then she would kill them and drink their blood. In the ancient Greek she was also called Lamia or Striga, who was a black bird which flies at night and seek children whos blood it can drink. Lilith is often pictured with wings on her back, as a bird, and with her feet as eagle or owl feet. She is much older than christianity. But then that religion came, and didn´t like Lilith, so they made her a demon - she is the mother of all demons, especially the vampires
I hope this helps and clears up some things for you.

The first vampire was a kid named Chuck.
Here is the story of Chuck: One day, God was busy molding Eve's image from that of a Ferrari 250 GTO, when he noticed a Vampire bat, ironically named so, had taken up perch in the Tree of Wobbly Things and Trinkets. God thought nothing of it at the time, and continued to shape Eve's thighs like the two gorgeous fenders of the 250 GTO. What God didn't know was, the Vampire bat was also a huge fan of the classic Ferrari designs, but was jealous that he wasn't given the curves that this "Eve" was being given, nor did he have a round, white circle on his side with a number in black such as Eve had also been given. At that moment, the same time a flock of geese mysteriously dove head-first into the tar pit of doom for no reason whatsoever other than to see what it felt like to be both tarred and feathered, the Vampire bat planned its revenge. Then, he fell asleep for 18 years due to an accidental Xanax overdose.
When the Vampire bat had awaken, Eve had already had several children, and the Garden of Eden had been closed for some time for renovations. The Vampire bat remembered his disgust at God's creation of Eve, and the plan that he had to seek revenge re-unfolded in his mind like a map that had been purchased, unfolded, used, kept stored away for 18 years, then unfolded again for use but done so more carefully because time had aged the map material and all the corners are suddenly crackly. The Vampire bat had decided long ago to make one of Eve's children into a Vampire bat, like him, by swapping out their blood through a complicated transfusion process that he was still a bit sketchy would work. He decided first on Caine, but he was banished to roam the earth with a large, 2 story-high green mohawk growing out of his ass -end for killing his brother Abel. Next was a kid named Seth, but he was a little too into G.I.Joe and climbing trees. The Vampire bat needed someone more... goth. The latest son of Eve, a kid named Chuck, was sitting near a cliff, watching lemmings plunge to their death. Chuck was writing an epic poem about the futility of life, and was planning to test his theory that man could not fly like the birds, when suddenly a set of teeth thin like hypodermic needles plunged into his neck. The Vampire bat drank him like a Capri Sun. The rest is history.

I mean, I'm sure the readers are quite bright, but if you even flip thru the source material, you don't have to posit elaborate theories to know that Maryann is a maenad!

Dapne is more than likely a werewolf. They were brought up by the doctor who treated Sookie. It would explain her attraction to Sam, as he runs around like a dog, and her ability to smell him out.

I thought the episode didn't advance the story that much, but it did put the season in a certain direction. The episode was still amazing though. I have a full review and summary on my blog.
