(S05E05) Sometimes you'll see an episode of a show and everything is going along as you expect, you're entertained and intrigued, the actors and writers and producers and director have done their job well. For most of this episode, that was the case. If only that were true about the last five minutes. There is no sense in gang violence, even as it was presented in this show. But the random, out of the blue quality made the ending even more senseless.
When Father Jack -- he of the heavy Boston accent that made me think of the Kennedys -- tried to suggest that there was meaning in Reggie's death struck me as anti-The Closer writing. It wasn't the show's style and the actions of the detectives were sappier than anything I can recall seeing on the series. I didn't buy it.
But that came at the finish. Before that, Brenda and company were in the zone. That was especially true in Brenda's confrontation with the two gang bangers who attempted to steal the Cadillac. With that sweet, soft Southern drawl, she completely snowed the wise guys into signing up for a murder rap. It didn't matter that they didn't pull the trigger; they were part of the crime and would pay as much as the shooter.
Mr. Blake, the man who shot the gun, was a victim nearly as much as the man who died, Reggie. The irony of the case was tragic because Reggie's death was completely random. A stray shot from two blocks away, a bullet that was meant to frighten car thieves, hit Reggie in the back of the head and killed him. As the coroner pointed out when he examined the wound, if a marksman had aimed the pistol at him from that distance, it would have taken a miracle to land where it did on purpose. Talk about dumb luck. The cry from Mr. Blake when he was informed that his stray shot killed a man was harrowing. Brenda looked shaken as if she never expected that reaction.
Fritzie brought up having a baby. He didn't actually say that Brenda would give birth, but clearly he's interested in a family. Maybe it was natural that in the wake of losing Kitty and feeling the void, he would bring up the subject again. But Brenda's fear of committing to a family was clear. I don't think Fritz is going to give up without a fight, though. And Brenda did listen to him and use his advice, albeit in a different way.
There were two instances in which that happened. Brenda actually took advice that she initially rejected. First, Gabriel's suggestion that they meet with the community members face to face, and second to expect something better to happen instead of something worse which were Fritzie's words. Could it be that Brenda Leigh is evolving? Perhaps that's what the ending was implying, although I'm as cynical as Flynn about seeing real change.
Good episode for Sanchez because it was gang-related, his specialty. There were two great bits for him, when he went after Santos and Cruz for disrespecting Brenda was one. The other was repeated a couple of times, when he hurried through the church, busy to do police work, but took a turn at the altar to genuflect and kneel.
Finally, let's hear it for Buzz, using his ingenuity to get a grant of $70,000 for new equipment. Tao was like a kid with a new toy when he showed off the multiple angles and the wireless hook up, annoying the heck out of Provenza. By the way, are those group scenes in the monitoring room now are a thing of the past?

This was an excellent episode--one of the best of the season thus far. The Closer always seems to integrate personal lives with the investigation. Done extremely well in this episode! The end? I thought it was great! Really brought home the discussions about making the world better. I can see Brenda really thinking about a child at this point. She'll resist, but the thought will be in her head and heart. "Can we make this a better place to live?"

I see the fact that Brenda used Gabriel's suggestion of going to the community for help, without acknowledging that it was originally his idea another example of their deteriorating relationship. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.
I expect the baby issue to, at the least, introduce tension in Brenda and Fritz' marraige, at most, to break them up since TV cannot portray a stable married relationship. (Of course, tehre was Hart to Hart, but that was a looong time ago!)

I also thought of Alison and Joe DuBois in response to this comment.

I think Alison and Joe DuBois are stable all things considered. :) And I'm sure others will bring up other examples. It's possible especially if you have smart writers.

Agreed, both Joe & Allison and Brenda and Fritz behave just like a "real" married couple should, not a scripted TV couple. They fight - and yes, sometimes it gets UGLY when they do - but there is always a love and passion for their relationship evident even when they fight. Both husbands are married to strong willed women and both of them get frustrated with them but it never keeps them from loving their partner. All it means is that they have to work harder to get them to see another point of view before they will accept it. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, I love both couples immensely.
As far as Brenda's using Sgt. Gabriel's suggestion without giving him credit, I think it was less her "stealing" his suggestion than it was her just listening to him. Gabriel has expressed in other shows that he thinks he doesn't have Brenda's ear the way he used to and in a round about way I think the writers are bringing their relationship back to where it was before. Obviously, the Chief does listen to him - he just doesn't always like the way she does it. Now, to his credit Brenda does sometimes stick him with the crap duties like having to be the one to go notify the victim's family in this show but overall, Brenda has also tried not to play favorites the way she has in the past.
Loved the whole Sanchez storyline. He's slowly getting his confidence back and yet he's still vulnerable and sensitive to what's going on around him. Great character work! I loved when he demanded the two bangers show some respect for Brenda when they were being interviewed. Just classic Sanchez!

right on, Michael! I think it was Brenda finally listening to Sgt. Gabriel again.
Sanchez running back for the holy water and paying respect to the Amen as my kids call Jesus on the cross, was GREAT and being Latina and attending mass in a Catholic Church - this is totally something that becomes second nature - you can't go into a church and not do this - seeing it reflected in a drama series in such a funny manner - i really appreciated and loved it.
I love the Fritz and Brenda relationship. They fight, argue and most importantly love and respect each other. I don't know about a baby for them though......unless Fritz is the one to keep normal hours allowing Brenda to continue with the hours she keeps with her job...
i actually totally see that happening....
