Comedy Central's holiday weekend Stand-Up Blowout

Katt WilliamsSince programming anything new is probably a waste on a holiday weekend, Comedy Central is programming roughly 4,000 previously aired stand-up specials (okay, just 40, but that's a lot) from some of the biggest names on its rosters, including Dane Cook, Jeff Dunham, Katt Williams, Louis C.K., Lewis Black, Brian Regan, Demetri Martin, Ron White, Lisa Lampanelli, and Jim Gaffigan. They'll also sprinkle in some of their Comedy Central Presents half-hour showcases. It's called the Stand-Up Blowout Weekend.

The first special is at 3 PM - Aisha Tyler is Lit: Live at the Fillmore and end, officially, with Drew Hastings: Irked and Miffed at 3 AM Monday morning. Sunday at 10PM is the network premiere of Dave Attell: Captain Miserable, which originally aired on HBO on December 8, 2007.

For a stand-up junkie like me, this is a potentially great approach. There are specials in there, like Hastings' and D.L. Hughley's Unapologetic, that I'd want to revisit. Irked and Miffed was underrated, and I only got to see Hughley's special once. It's sort of like the Puppy Bowl of stand-up - I know I can pop in and out of Comedy Central all weekend and get actual stand-up (insert hack comment about watching music on MTV here).

The one potential drawback are the specials that are a bit more graphic in nature, like Louis C.K.'s Chewed Up, which one of our readers commented was unwatchable for him in an edited format. So viewers beware of any comic that might work blue airing in the afternoon (Comedy Central will often air the specials uncensored later in the evening). But Gaffigan and Regan, especially, could be shown anywhere in the schedule, and always deliver.

And don't worry, all the regular programming is back Monday evening.
