(S05E11) You know that there is going to be a lot of unnecessary fluff when there are seven couples and two hours to fill. The show decided to give us highs and lows of the dancers. Damn time wasters. Did anyone notice the credits took twice the amount than they normally do? Our guest judge was Mia Michaels who admitted that her harsh opinion of Brandon has changed. Cat in her hot fuchsia dress mentioned a "big announcement" near the end of the show, as if she didn't want us to switch over to America's Got Talent. Unfortunately, it wasn't Michael Jackson related.
High Marks
Melissa & Ade – Classical Pas de Deux - It had to be rigged for Melissa to get the Classical Pas de Deux; she'd be the only one who could ace the performance. Similar to the first Bollywood routine, the first actual Ballet routine was dreamy and beautiful. Ade's strength is staggering and Melissa is beautiful in her element.
Janette & Brandon - Cha-Cha – I'm always afraid that the first dance would be forgotten, but the dance was solid and after long commercials I still remembered it. I disliked the Nigel statement about Brandon being Michelangelo, but Mia explained her tough love with Brandon so they balanced out.
Middle Ground
Karla & Vitolio – Quickstep – For the kiss of death, the two did well. The quick change was great, very magician of Jean-Mark to think of. The routine was 50/50 Broadway and Quickstep. The two had a strong hold, but a little weak in the separate section.
Jeanine & Phillip - Hip-Hop - Two Hip-Hop routines in four weeks? That's an unfair advantage for Phillip. Let's give him a contemporary to see how he survives on Jeanine's turf. I think the two had to hold the chain to prevent a broken ankle, because they didn't during the practice video. Mia thought the chain was sloppy, but the dance was strong; luckily we're not voting for the chain.
Kayla & Kupono – Jazz – Sonya is a little crazy, but next to Brian Friedman and Mia Michaels, she seems almost normal. I don't remember any specific moves, but I remembered the whole vampire vibe. If the two failed a contemporary, they deserve to lose.
The Bottom Rung
Randi & Evan - Broadway - I loved the 60s/Fosse routine, but I did agree with Nigel that it wasn't as sharp as it could have been. The wrists are what made those 60s productions like Sweet Charity so sexy. Evan disappointed me in his own style. I felt the height deficit that Nigel mentioned and this is the first time.
Caitlin & Jason - Pop Jazz – Sometimes routines go right over my head. The only part I got and liked was Jason's frightened man. Caitlin reminded me of the Halle Berry version of Catwoman and I agree with Mia that the tinfoil was distracting. You can't prevent ugly costumes, but Caitlin didn't channel the emotion that she needed to fill out the suit.
The Big Announcement – The Dizzy Feet Foundation - Carrie Ann Inaba from Dancing with the Stars is working with Katie Holmes and Nigel to help get underprivileged dancers. It sounds like Idol Gives Back, but with focus. I Shane Sparks was labeled as "Judge" for America's Best Dance Crew. I love this United States of Dance; joining together for a good cause.
The Other Announcement – The 100th episode will have Katie Holmes perform her Judy Garland routine. If it's anything like her performance on Eli Stone, I'm sold.
Who are my bottom three? I think that Randy, Brandon, and Phillip have a high number of supporters, so they are safe. Melissa & Ade rocked the Pas de Deux, so they are safe. Caitlin & Jason have been in the bottom before and with America not understanding Kayla & Max's performance, I doubt this one will make much sense. We're left with Karla & Vitolio and Kayla & Kupono. I can see Kayla become the black widow and they get rid of Kupono and Caitlin is out-shined by the rest of the girls. Who goes home? Leave your comments below.

Bottom three this week will be: Caitlin & Jason, Karla & Vitolio and Kayla & Kupono with Jason & Caitlin going home but if there is any justice then Kupono will go instead of Jason. I don't really care for Jason but he can go next week and Kupono go this week. I just can't stand looking at Kupono any longer. Not that he danced poorly last night but he should have went home a few weeks ago and I just don't care for him. As for the girls I don't care which one goes home. If I was gonna lean towards saving one of them I would say Kayla.
I think they labeled Shane Sparks as "America's Best Dance Crew" judge because he's had it with SYTYCD. His last 2 routines couple of weeks ago were performed very badly, not that the choreagraphy was much better but I think he still has a bad taste in his mouth and doesn't want to be associated with the show. I'm usually a big Shane Sparks fan but that was bad.
Oh BTW.... First!!!!!!

As a ballet lover, I was excited to see that classical ballet would be featured. However, the selection was traditional and conventional. The other styles on the show have innovative choreography (and use ballet technique extensively). Yet ballet is presented and talked about by the judges as some rarified, elite style. Why didn't they showcase ballet as exciting and edgy? That does exist and would have shown just what ballet training enables dancers to do.

Bottom three, Karla and Vitolio, Caitlin and Jason, Kayla and Kupono.
Mia Michaels Apology meant nothing, because she couldnt even bring herself to say his name, Covert apologies just means that you dont want to apologize in the first place. Her saying that Randi and Evans routine sucked because of them was way off, that choreography was terrible, it was messy, unimaginative and Heavy and thats why they didnt pull it off.

I disagree about Mia. She doesn't strike me as the type to apologize for no reason. She gave Brandon props and she meant it. She spoke her mind, not sure why that means she is such a bad person. People say she is a diva and nasty...they are doing the same thing she did..speaking their minds. Does that make those that don't like her any better?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Melissa and Ade....beautiful last night. What more can I say?

I think it's the end of the road for Caitlin and Jason. Aside from being consistently in the bottom 3 I think the judges like the pairing of Kayla and Kupono (and they LOVE Kayla) so even if they are in the bottom 3 they will be safe, and I think they might want to give Karla and Vitolio one more week to see what they can do together.

Why must Mary screech so? We have to mute her comments or just leave the show.

This season is just boring. I loved all the dancers of last season and how well they worked outside of their dance genre.
It is so unfair that Phillip keeps getting hip hop, Melissa gets classical. It would actually be a better show if they really had to dance
and reach for new levels.
It is also unfair that a choreographer comes in, does a goofy number, and the dancers get eliminated because it was too way out.
Also, the dancers do not choose their costumes, so why get on them for that? I'm sure Caitlin was embarrassed to wear that stupid outfit.
I think Karla and Vitolio should go tonight.

no one thinks Randi and Evan are in the bottom three? even though they are my fav couple, they did Bob Fosse a big disservice last night. i don't think they are going home, but i def think they are in the bottom three.
i really hope Karla gets to leave tonight. i just do not like her.
i think they put Shane Sparks as judge for ABDC because he hasn't done as much for SYTYCD as he had in past seasons for the show and also because it gives Dizzy Feet more breadth if it seems to connect all kinds of dance shows (SYTYCD, DWTS, ABDC, etc.).

Based on last night and past weeks, Karla and Vitolio should go home. Karla just didn't look happy to be there last night...no personality to get behind. Vitolio hasn't stepped up enough to compete with the other males still in the game.

Bottom 3:
Melissa and Ade - I dig balet enough, but I can't see the average viewer opting for it over some of the more creative routines. Even still, I don't know what everyone sees in this couple. I find them fairly boring.
Randi and Evan - Randi and Evan are good, but when your down to 7 couples, good isn't good enough. I expected more out of Evan, but I recognized early on he didn't have strong enough features (height, build, jawline) to play leading man. Even if his wrists were more flexible (which is hard to convey in driving gloves!!!) Evan's just too boyish (...the same problem I had with Jonathan.)
Caitlin and Jason - These two are a consistent let down and should have been cut weeks ago (maybe this week, fingers crossed.) I will say this though, the choreographer did them a terrible disservice with a bizarre routine instead of something powerful and safe. Likewise, the costume choice was awful; tinfoil aside, Jason's torn shirt kept flopping over his face, and his necklace consistently ended up over his ears.
Cut = Caitlin & Jason

you don't think thousands of little girls, who do not have Johnathan to vote for anymore, will have seen that performance and not want to be a ballerina??

Regarding Caitlin's costume -- I wouldn't be surprised if the "foil" detail was added after the camera rehearsal, when they discovered that the black material (PVC, spandex, whatever it was) was incredibly hard to light and shoot. Say what you like about the choices SYTYCD's costume designers make, but they have a decent budget. The only reason something would look sloppy like that is if it was a rush job.
The disappointing thing about SYTYCD, which becomes increasingly obvious as the seasons stack up, is that the show can't afford to piss off any of its guest choreographers. Let's be honest: we've all seen routines that would've landed all but the most popular couples in the bottom three, no matter how well they were performed. Some routines are shallow and/or lackluster (and yes, Shane Sparks, I'm talking to YOU). Could the choreographer be at fault? Unthinkable.

It was obvious to me last night that the judges did not like Brian Friedman's Martian choreography and chose their words very, very carefully, but you are right. It's a shame when a couple lands in the bottom because of poor choreography.
I'm also starting to feel that because Mia, Sonya's and in the past Wade Robson's choreography has been so memorable other, less talented choreographers think "weird" is better. It's not!!

Funny how certain couples get certain choreographers (and thus, better choreography?) while others get stuck with some "interesting" choreography (read - not that good).
I think it is rigged, beyond just having Melissa and Ade do "classical dance" (it's called ballet, btw, not "classical dance").
I was bored with the classical ballet piece. I don't see thousands of little girls wanting to take ballet after seeing it - if it was something a little more "magical" (say a princess or fairy storyline since we are talking about little girls), then maybe. But Juliet? Uh, no.
Plus, that would mean little girls would be watching SYTYCD. Do they?
I was actually surprised at how almost-normal Mary was last night. She actually made comments about what was good and what wasn't - without answering her own questions (such as "Did I think you could have done more? Yes, you could have"). Sure, she still did screech a bit but it was astounding! Did someone talk to her about it? :)
