One of my pet peeves is when someone says that they're too young to remember something that happened in history. As if they couldn't have read about it somewhere. I thought of that after seeing this clip from Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher. It's Democratic strategist Paul Begala making a joke about Meghan McCain's comment that she wasn't born when Reagan was president so she wouldn't know what he's talking about.
Now, I'm not a big fan of Begala, but he does have point (though he could have used a more accessible example than the French Revolution, it would have been more pointed). I can't decide if McCain was being serious or if she was making a joke about Begala's age or if it's part of the "dumb blonde" joke she makes later in the clip. You decide.
She was being serious. She's a brainless ditz who really didn't do herself any favors in her appearance. Maher had Joe the Plumber on a few weeks ago and he did a lot better than McCain, who just sounded like an airhead C student.
I was born in 1981, but I can tell you nearly every detail of WWII, the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 or details of Alexander's conquest of the known world more than 2000 years ago. I certainly know about the 1960s and 1970s because those are the decades that affected my childhood...just like the 80s were for McCain. What an idiot!
Ms. McCain was referring to comments that Barack Obama has made in the past: When asked about his ties to Bill Ayers the pres said he he should not be held accountable for his ties to a person who did bad things when he was only 8 years old; when asked about a tirade that Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega made against the US, his only response was that he was glad Ortega did not hold him responsible for things that happened when he was 3. Not surprising that no one in the MSM picked up on that, hmmm?
that doesn't really relate at all to what's being said here. If you watch, what she's talking about is not knowing that Reagan blamed the Carter admin for a lot of the problems, saying that she wasn't born yet. The issue was that Obama was blaming a lot of the current problems on the past administration and she felt it was too much.
Not being held responsible for things that happened when you were a child is totally different than not knowing about anything that happened before you were born!
Is Meghan Mccain the best that Bill Maher can do? She says she's a Republican but I haven't ever actually articulate any Republican beliefs, she seems to be just a punching bag for liberals. I'm not sure that Liz Cheney would give Bill the time of day but I'd love to watch her dismantle Begala and Maher without breaking a sweat.
Oh, please. You need to come back to reality. Liz wouldn't last five seconds with Bill Maher or Paul Begala and she knows it, which is why she would never show her face on a show like "Real Time." Hell, I wish it HAD been her instead of Meghan because at least Meghan tries to act like a human being; ol' lyin' Liz is just like her dirty-dealing father in that she has no use for facts and truth. She's as much of an empty shell as he is.
When I saw this on HBO, I was amazed how fast she pretended to be helplessly lost. Was her intent to be seen as a vicitim of Maher's style of interviewing? Like last week's Roker interview subject's feeble attempt to create a smokescreen and deflect attention to a lack of substence? Maher treated her too graciously
Dan & Creep your both dead wrong you both lied about Meghan McCain. Dan Meghan isn't brainless ditz as you have claim which as I said is a flat out lie. I could careless that you know a whole lot of History Dan your loser with no life what so ever and doesn't know what your talking about.
Creep Meghan isn't a pouty spoiled kid as you have claim which is a flat out lie. Creep you need to grow up your pouty spoiled kid not Meghan.
Meghan McCain is smart and knows her stuff she is always right.
She's certainly one of the best the republican party has to offer right now Ben, I'll give you that much. I wouldn't call her a ditz, but if she wants to be a political figure she really should brush up on her US history and work on her speaking - which does sometimes cause her to come off as a ditz. She was out of her element and overmatched on this show, but Bill did as good a job he could with her and was very courteous. Her one on one with Maddow showed her in a much better light, I thought.
The only thing that Liz Cheney is good at is regurgitating a lot of Right Wing Talking Points; however, comedy to the aside, Bill and Begala brings much substance and they are both Political Astute Operators. They would drown her in her own tears.
I watched the show and she was without a doubt out of her element here. I know supporter of the Republican Party and I don't really like her blog posts but she seemed nervous with people who really knew what they were talking about and have doing it longer.
I think that she would have been better served to do an interview with just Maher by herself at the beginning of the show, like Joe The Plumber did a few weeks ago.
I do think she tried to get sympathy playing the ditz card a little when she realized the trouble she was in with the panelists. Not a good start to her career.
I too am not the biggest Begala fan, even though I have agreed with him on major points in the past. Still, I too that M. McCain was just being an idiot. I also hate it when people say they were not born during a certain period in history, and therefore they wouldn't have a clue about something. She also wasn't born during the Vietnam War, but she most certainly SHOULD know something about that!

Yeah she sounds as asinine as Obama did when he responded to Bill Ayres' criminal past with "I was seven."
