Ricky Gervais of The Office and Extras fame is going to design a man purse -- but it's for a good cause. The U.K.'s Prostrate Cancer Charity (part of the Charity Aids Foundation) asked television stars and other celebrities to design a man's handbag for The Manbag Company. Each unique design will be auctioned off to fight prostate cancer.
Of course, Gervais is a funny man and a cool, self-effacing celeb. But, it'll be interesting to see if even he can make something as inherently uncool as a man purse into swag a guy will want to spend money on -- cancer be damned.
Other celebrities (and pseudo-celebrities) joining Gervais in the bag designing business include Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Alan Carr and Jade Jagger.
Sure, it's all for a great cause and should be a huge success. But, there will always be men out there who'd rather risk prostate cancer than be seen with a Manbag.

You clearly do not know a soul who has cancer otherwise you would know they would trade/do anything they could to avoid having it. Not funny. I also disagree with you that Manbag's are inherently uncool - to you maybe. They clearly have a purpose and are very popular in the UK (otherwise there wouldn't be a company for them AND the charity probably would have chosen another outlet instead) and I would venture to say anywhere else in the world without closed-minded individuals that attribute them to anything other then their designed purpose - to allow guys to carry more than just their wallet, no different then a woman needing it. A nice post on the charity and celebs would have been nice without the commentary.

Again, just wanting to say I agree with you, Midnight Penguin. I'd take a "pseudo-celebrity" trying to help the cancer cause than a dimwit writing such trash about it anyday.

The author of this, John Scott Lewinski, is an idiot for suggesting that someone would risk getting prostate cancer than be seen with a manbag. My dad died a horrible death from the effects of prostate cancer and if he could have avoided by carrying any object, no matter how ridiculous the author seems to think it is, you better sure as hell believe he would have. What a frickin uninformed idiot!

Me again. Midnight Penguin, I agree with your comments totally. If you ever go to NYC and surrounding burroughs, men carry "manbags" all the time. They're similar to messenger bags and are easy to carry your stuff around when you're walking/biking/etc. through the city. I want to reiterate your comments about the author not knowing anyone with cancer. This piece is just utter nonsense and is really disgusting to me.

Get your priorities straight, people.
Don't be offended because movie stars are hawking themselves for cancer.
Be offended that they're selling messenger bags for $300. ("Manbag" my entire ass - they're messenger bags. Been around for years.)

FYI moderators: The link to the charity website should read "prostate cancer charity," not "prostrate."
