I don't mean the filming of the show moving to Los Angeles. It is already filmed there. I'm talking about the setting of the show moving from New York City to Los Angeles.Matthew Weiner hints at such a move, in that secretive way that he does because he hates giving away spoilers. But he does say in this new Rolling Stone interview that the 60s were all about Los Angeles overtaking New York as "the future," and we've already seen a few episodes set there (last season, when Don got involved with Anna). Weiner doesn't say they will move there, but he does say "I always want the audience to be worried that I'm going to pick up and move the show somewhere. Because, you know, I might."
I doubt this will happen. It wouldn't surprise me if it happened, because this show is different and really, anything can happen. But I think New York City of the early 60s is a character on the show too, and while I can imagine episodes set there, I doubt everyone from the ad firm is suddenly going to move to Los Angeles, even if a British company did buy them in the season finale. Or I should say "it looks like they bought them," because Weiner also hints that maybe that didn't happen after all.
So let's assume the show does move to L.A. How will that change the show and the characters?

It might change it enough that I would no longer watch. That's the honest truth. I love the show, but the setting is very important. The episodes in LA with Don were almost too Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. It was off.
The idea that they would move kind of pisses me off. There was something very specific about advertising and NYC. I think that is the story, and to move it so early would do damage.
And, no, I'm not anti-LA. I love LA. And I love NYC. For different reasons, but they both have charm. I think its integral to the atmosphere to remain in NY.

Mad Men isn't really about advertising, though. But I think I'd almost prefer moving it, if it had to, first to Miami before moving on to L.A. Florida's in the 60's was significant, too, what with the space race, Gleason, etc. Either locale would afford lots of further character development, though. NYC has been done to death.
