The New York Post reports that Artie Lange is no longer welcome to appear on HBO Sports or Joe Buck Live. I'm not sure if that ban extends to the entirety of HBO. For those of you that missed his, to say the least, controversial appearance, TV Squad had it covered but sadly the video was taken down.Considering the company that Artie keeps on Sirius Satellite Radio, being banned should not be a foreign concept to him. No doubt they'll talk about it on Howard Stern's radio show for days on end.
There are several aspects of this decision that irk me:
- In my youth, I've watched HBO comedy specials with language that would make Artie blush. When did HBO become so family-friendly?
- The show was live, but it was broadcast on Monday at 9 P.M. Why would kids be up that late to watch Joe Buck Live? Actually, why would kids watch Joe Buck Live?
- HBO is a premium channel. Doesn't that mean that you have to pay to hear Artie Lange's profane, mean-spirited and homophobic rant?
- Didn't HBO know anything about Artie Lange before booking him?

Hey Trechak!
Didn't appreciate the comment about "considering the company that Artie keeps..."
Let me tell you something about the "company that Artie keeps"... the 20 million of us who listen to the Howard Stern Show daily... many of us who are highly educated and drawing salaries 50 times that of a blogger... who are you to judge us because we listen to the Stern show every day and find it funny? Despite what people say, we aren't all Howard drones who agree with and hang on every word that Stern says, but we do find the show generally very entertaining.
Now about the Joe Buck Live show...
Artie makes no apologies for who he is, nor should he. Buck (and anybody who has ever heard the Howard Stern Show) knew what he was getting into and sold Artie out on the back end. In Buck's ads leading up to the show, he says "It's Live. Anything can happen." And boy, DID it happen! Now, Buck wants to distance himself from that? That's his own damn fault. He's no elder statesman of sports like Bob Costas. Artie has toned it down before for shows such as Best Damn Sports Show... but this is HBO... uncensored, real, PAY television. Home of Real Sex, Cathouse, True Blood, Entourage, etc. They got what they asked for, whether they acknowledge it or not. They got what we get every day on Sirius... raw, uncensored Artie. And we are educated. And we love it.

Way to jump the gun. He was referring to the show/hosts/co-hosts, not the audience.

George, I reacted that way because I'm sick and tired of everyone in the world thinking that Stern fans are whacko and illiterate idiots who can't think for themselves. I can see your point, but it would be easy for me or anyone else to infer from the blogger's statements (as I've heard a million times from other people who are Stern haters) that he was extending his comments to the Stern audience. However, if that was not the case, I apologize.
One more thing about Joe Buck Live... if you watch the Overtime video, Buck starts right back up with Artie. Artie was going to be quiet, but Buck immediately says, "Is there anything else you'd like to get off your chest, Artie?" Don't tell me Buck wasn't asking for it! He's probably already called Artie off the books and told him how brilliant he was on the show!

He needs an attitude adjustment. Very mean, very uncomfortable. Watch 27 seconds. Camera pans to Joe Buck who was caught looking at his producers off set with the OH "crap" look. He berated Buck. It takes a lot for me to become uncomfortable, and I literally he the back button on the website. Artie Lange is an idiot.

Artie, it's true, was told to liven the show up if things got boring. But he was not told to become a boorish, bigoted, selfish jerk who turned it all into the Artie Show. I listen to Howard Stern so I have no problem with offensive material, but Artie acted like a complete asshat. It's possible to be funny without being obnoxious.

Agree. He has been on other shows like Conan and a couple other night shows. He didn't act like a piece of crap on those so his excuse for what occurred on Joe Buck Live is trash. What a bum.

Gee. Wonder if your a Howard Stern Hater?
"Considering the company that Artie keeps on Sirius Satellite Radio, being banned should not be a foreign concept to him."
I love how it is always so easy to sit and judge from upon high.
Joe Buck is sitting quietly back and thanking his lucky stars that everyone is talking about his lame attempt at a show. While Artie is a member of the Stern family he is at best the loud mouth little punk of the punch. And he does not have the tact that maybe Howard might have in trying to light up a room. Yes, you read that correctly. Howard having the tact. While he may be over the top for some he is a great entertainer and always wants to put on the best show possible. No matter the audience.
The Joe Buck show was not ruined by Artie Lange. Joe Buck was just shown to be way over his head with the likes of an Artie Lange. While I think he may have over done it, anyone who knows Artie or has read his book or seen him on the likes of Conan etc. Should be well aware of what they are buying into. And if they are worried about standards and practices on an HBO program they should forewarn any comic who is going to be sitting in who is known for his edgy material as to what the standard is.
Now as far as your snide comments. Congrats! I am sure you have taken the time to listen to Howard and formed your own opinion as to his material.

Benjy & Matt,
I really doubt that Brad meant "the company he keeps" as implying something negative Stern or his listeners. At least, I took it to refer only to the fact that Stern & co. are known for pushing boundaries and, at times, getting banned/fired/suspended/etc for it. Stern was, after all, famously fired from NBC in the 80s and, more recently, from Clear Channel (which I believe is how he ultimately ended up on Sirius in the first place).

Re: the comment regarding Howard Stern in the blog entry,
I don't get what you are all up in arms about. The way I read it, he shouldn't be surprised by the boot. Considering the person he works with on another show, who has been the source of much controversy, Artie Lange might have considered it unsurprising that he was in fact treated to the same attitudes Mr. Stern is faced with daily.
Funny, how different people read the same words and come up with wildly different conclusions.

I listen to Howard Stern and that right there was Artie Lange being Artie Lange. If they took their time to tell Artie that they didn't want profanity, they wouldn't have gotten it. Look at the way he acts on other tv shows. He was told to make it interesting and that was it. Then he might have been able to let it go, but Joe Buck started making disrespectful remarks towards him and if you knew Artie, you know he was gonna blow up.
Joe Buck, your show sucks. No one watches it. It was only interesting because Artie Lange owned every one of them.

I think the comment that Howard Stern has 20 million listeners is farrrrr exaggerated.
Recently Artie has been very angry and more outspoken on the show. He lashes out at callers and says some pretty nasty things to guests. Whether its cause he's off the heroin or not, bottom line is he's not funny.
If it wasn't for Howard, Artie's career would be in the toilet. He was a no body when he showed up (Mad TV performer isn't even D list) and he'll be back to being a no body if he leaves Stern.
If he was so happy in life and with his new girlfriend, he wouldn't be so damned miserable on the show and during guest appearances. He must realize the hot girlfriend is only banging him to meet his celebrity acquaintances (and to move on to someone more famous) and his career hangs on whether Howard keeps him around or not. Pretty sad.
Good luck with all that Artie.
