This installment of Sketch Comedy Saturday is less about you pining for new episodes of Saturday Night Live and more about me having an excuse to use this old image of Stephen Colbert with a puppy. It makes me sick, it's so adorable. Unfortunately, The Dana Carvey Show wasn't just twenty-some minutes of Mr. Colbert nonchalantly holding baby animals, but it was still a pretty funny program.

The Dana Carvey Show only ran for a single season back in the mid-90s, but the names behind the program are certainly still relevant. Cast members included the now super-famous Louis CK, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell, who both voiced Ace and Gary of the Ambiguously Gay Duo. Robert Smigel, who also worked on the show, brought the Duo with him from The Dana Carvey Show to his new gig at Saturday Night Live, where probably most of the world got to know the not-so-vaguely homoerotic super-buddies.



Anyone familiar with Dana Carvey's comedic affection for weird voices and lots of costuming won't be too surprised by the choices on this show. Although a lot of skits are still extremely funny, the topical bits are, uh, really topical. With every year, the memory and jokes of Perot fade faster and faster. He was a millionaire, right? Who wanted to be president? And I think he had big ears or something. Yeah.

The weirder sketches have held up pretty well. Some of my favorites include the waiters who are nauseated by food, featuring Colbert and Carrell. Colbert still likes to do that fake gagging sound on The Colbert Report, so he's obviously been perfecting it for a pretty long time.
