I don't mean of one particular show, I'm talking about the best episode of any TV series? Not an easy thing to do. Just think of how many shows and how many episodes we've had in 60+ years. The new issue of TV Guide is out, and while the full list of the 100 best episodes isn't online yet (here are #'s 100-81), we do know some episodes in the top ten (TV Guide did a similar issue back in 1997).
The number one ep? "The Contest" from Seinfeld. "Chuckles Bites The Dust" from The Mary Tyler Moore Show and "Opie The Birdman" from The Andy Griffith Show are up there too, as is the pilot episode of Lost and the "College" episode of The Sopranos. What's the first episode that comes to mind when you think of great TV?

Hell yes! I would have said the finale of Season 1 and the shadow part 1 but I accept your answer.
Also I'd have to say the season 4 finale of Entourage. Everything about that episode was perfect.

The episode from the west wing that made the list was "Two Cathedrals" and it was in the 40s.

The Shield pilot.
Any Jimmy Smits-era NYPD Blue, perhaps Lost Israel.
Any first- or second-season ep of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

No best TV episode list would be complete without the Taxi episode where Reverend Jim takes his driving test. To this day, I can't look at a yellow light without thinking, "Whaaat... dooooes... aaaa..... yellllllow.... liiiiight.... meeeeeean?" LOL!
Henry Blake's final MASH episode and the last episode of Newhart should be on that list too.
I also think the Daydreams and Titanic episodes of NewsRadio and the Trivial Pursuit and Culinary Killer episodes of Wings should be on that list, but I know they won't ;(

My choices would probably include "Walkabout" or "The Constant" from Lost and "My Screw-up" from Scrubs,

ER's "On The Beach"
"The Contest" is definatly up there
I also think that the last two episodes of the most recent season of House were great as a pair too.

I was hoping that "hush" would make the list too, but "Once More, With Feeling" was #14
