It looks like Sarah Palin got her chance to respond to Dave's inappropriate joke about her daughter. You know, the one he already apologized for. Palin chided that Dave should apologize to all young women around the country rather than just she and her family. Was it a legitimate mistake on Dave's part and the part of his writers? I believe it was. Is Sarah Palin using this as a political opportunity to get her name even more out there than it is? Yeah, I believe that's the case too.
A more appropriate response from the Alaskan governor would have been to accept the apology and, if she wants to hold a grudge, simply never appear on Dave's show or give it him any further publicity. She's a public figure, and sadly so are her children even if they didn't choose to be. No doubt they will be the targets of inappropriate jokes time to time.
Video of her response is after the jump.

You know he wasn't really contrite and can you image the outcry if he had said the same thing about a Democrate's child. Come on, give her a break, he was totally out of line.

I disagree. The political party doesn't matter. I don't think Dave should have apologized at all. He fell right into Palin's trap by apologizing. If he'd ignored it the story would have gone away and Palin wouldn't constantly be in the news whining and getting attention for herself. Moreover, when Bill Clinton was elected, Rush Limbaugh enjoyed showing pictures of pre-teen, brace-wearing Chelsea Clinton to the refrain of "Who Let the Dogs Out." No one was calling on him to apologize.
Was the Joke in poor taste? Sure. Should Dave had apologized? No. If you live your life in the public eye you have to accept the consequences. Sarah Palin didn't have a problem dragging her daughter and her baby-daddy into the limelight during the campaign. She has no room to complain.

Dave Letterman is not a funny man. He deserves to be horse whipped for the comments he made about Palin's daugher as well as the young ladies of our country and the world. It is not funny nor appropiate. Some things are not funny and this is one of them. Choose jokes more carefully. I will not watch his show again. It is disgusting.

YOU CAN'T BE THE BUTT OF A JOKE UNLESS SOMEHOWYOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO PUT YOURSELF IN THAT VULNERNABLE POSITION. MAYBE PALIN SHOULD BE SPENDING MORE TIME WATCHIING AND PROVIDING GUIDANCE TO HER CHILDREN. OBVIOUSLY, SHE HAS NOT..gET OFF THE POLITICAL BANDWAGON AND BE A MOTHER. LOW PAY BIG BENEFITS AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB IN THE WORLD. IF YOUR CHILDREN FAIL, CONSIDER YOURSELF A FAILURE, MOMS.

Janice, It would be more helpful if you could be more supportive if Women who have achieved as much as Sarah Palin. I do not agree with your "blame the Parent", cause. This is nonscense. It is always possible to have a career and be a Mother at the same time. You talk with a man's views.

I agree with the above three. I think its disgusting, and wrong for ANY aged child or young adult. Why are Palins children "public figures" but Obamas, Clintons or another dems kids not. Why does the press stay away from them without question, but not for her kids. Its disgusting and we should be outraged. Regardless of what you think of Palin. Typical ignorant scum.

Did anyone on this fraggin blog score above a 800 on their SATs?!??!? It's not analogous, plain and simple. Conan made a joke on Tuesday about the president visiting Green Bay. The problem, IT HADN'T HAPPENED YET!! Late Night hosts from Carson to Fallon use hyperbole and half truths when describing current events to elicit laughs in their monolouges. It happens ALL OF THE TIME. Palin didn't go to the game with either child, and basic implication would suggest Dave was making fun of the kid WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN KNOCKED UP ONCE!!!! Jesus Christ you fraktards, put down the keyboards and stop reproducing. We don't need morons like you even if you keep yourselves in the rust belt.

Who friggin cares. This is just this sad woman trying to stay on a pedestal in order to be some middle american hero. I agree the joke wasnt in very good taste but its a joke, thats all. I think the more important problem is that people are still making jokes about her and keeping her relevant. She clearly is not all there and is far from being able to take a joke.
Also the "he wasnt talking about my 14 year old daughter, he was talking about some other daughter" comment makes it sound like she cant keep track of all her kids which is kind of funny.

Janice you are an idiot! Yeah a 14 year old put herself out there to be made a joke. What about Obama and his wife. Why dont you mention that they should be spending more time with their kids? Or how about when Hillary and Billy boy were in office. How sexist are you. Being a strong woman who isnt afraid to state her views (REGARDLESS if you agree with them) is such a horrible idea of what a mother should do. Yeah, keep her home because only stay at home moms can do a good job. I guess no kids ever make mistakes unless they come from a bad mother. You are a joke. Shut up.

The difference between the Palins and the democrats you list is that the Palins trotted her kids out at every opportunity. Yes, every politician merchandises their family but Palin brought it to an entirely new level.
Oh, and my favorite picture of the 2008 election? The one with her youngest daughter with her $1500 Louis Vuitton bag on the tarmac.

Remember the "Daddy, where are you?" quote from one of the O's children when he was in St. Lous? She was public then. Just the other day Sasha had a BD party, on the set of the new Harry Potter movie. THat was public. Obama makes his children public by writing an open letter to them (http://www.parade.com/export/sites/default/news/2009/01/barack-obama-letter-to-my-daughters.html). Obama uses his children in the campaign making them public (from the pinnacle of Lib web sites - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/10/20/185932/96).
And you can find many more instances where he uses his children as political pawns. Should they be open to attacks? No, they shouldn't. And the Great Obama seems to agree when he made this quote:
"I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."
Or how about this quote, when talking about being born to a teenage (18) mother:
"How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics, and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off-limits."
(quotes from http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/01/obama.palin/index.html)
But, apparently, to some people of a political persuasion, think it is OK to attack the children of another political persuasion when it fits into their little world.

Actually, let me add a few more public appearances for the Obama girls:
Obama gives Access Hollywood interview with his children:
http://coverawards.com/2008/07/09/story_barack_obama_family_interview_access_hollywood_83912/
Michelle and children give interview and on the cover of People magazine (after saying that he would not put them in the public again):
http://coverawards.com/2008/07/23/news_people_magazine_features_the_obamas_at_home_93812/
Numerous interviews in Us magazine, where Barack talks about the music that the kids like (they don't like Britney, they are too "sensible" for that kind of stuff, they like Hannah Montana) where Michelle shops (Target), movies (Sex and The City), etc.
Michelle give an interview with Oprah (http://www.oprah.com/article/omagazine/20090223-orig-michelle-obama-oprah) talking about what Michelle prays about (wasn't Palin attacked over and over again about her religious beliefs), the children's activity schedule, how well they adjusted, etc. Making sure everybody knew that Michelle's mother was moving in with them.
And I can go on, and on, and on. All where they are put out in the public. Can they be used in jokes?

Legitimate mistake?! So saying that a 14 year old was “knocked up” is merely a “ legitimate mistake”! What if the “joke” was that the Obama’s girls “were knocked up by Alex Rodriguez”?! Would you think it was just a “ legitimate mistake”? Oho, I bet my arse not! (I wonder how stewardesses are taking the “joke” about them looking slutty?!) What about calling Mme. Obama a slutty orangutan?! Would also be a “ legitimate mistake”? Letterman KNEW he was talking about a 14 year-old child. If he had made this “joke” about my daughter, I'd challenge him to tell it to my face--when I'd shove his teeth down his disgusting throat with my fist! (Mind you, I am a woman who can fight my own fights!) If you have a daughter, like I do, you won't think that kind of sick "joke" is a " legitimate mistake"! By the way, why doesn't brave Mr. Letterman make jokes about Mike Tyson?

You seem like a very angry person. I'm concerned that you are doing yourself physical harm by allowing yourself to feel and feed such rage. That kind of stress isn't good for anyone.
Also, I thought Letterman's joke was funny. It was also pretty amusing when news came about about Bristol being pregnant while her mother was out there pushing abstinence-only "Christian" values.

Except that the joke was clearly about her older daughter, who has gotten knocked up in the past. Any 18 year old that is in the public spotlight is fair game. Any "mistake" is their lack of clarifying which daughter it was for those that need things completely spelled out for them.
