(S05E01) "Just because you've been a slutty, irresponsible, slutty slut and had unprotected sex with a Mexican doesn't mean we can't be friends." - Andy to Nancy
One of the things I love about Weeds is the show's ability to mix humor and drama in every episode. It leaned more towards the drama in season four, but hopefully, we'll get back to more humor in season five. It sure seems that way so far, even though I'm wondering how the heck Nancy is going to get out from under the Mexican mafia (literally), especially with Esteban's baby on board.
You have to wonder how many people watch Weeds as a Pot 101 primer. We've gotten some really good tips on what -- and what not -- to do in the pot-growing business. Now with Andy, Silas and Doug growing pot in a national forest, maybe our national forests will be covered with pot. I see lots of funny storylines ahead for these three.
Other stuff:
What a hoot that no one will pay the ransom to get Celia back from Quinn. Loved it when Dean Hodes said to the kidnappers, "I'm broke, and I'm her EX-husband. So knock yourself out." Then he and Allie went back to playing cards.
I'm digging the pairing of Nancy and Andy. It might be fun if they fled to Denmark, as Andy suggests. Of course, they'd have to take everyone else along, too.
Shane's already following in his mom's footsteps by selling pot in school. Loved the scene where the teacher approaches him about buying some weed. "I've got 23 papers to grade on Anne Frank. Do you know how depressing that is?"
Loved the dance scene - Flash Mob! - at the end.
What about you? How do you like season five of Weeds so far?

Art imitates life...I read this article a few weeks ago, and laughed when they used it in last night's episode
"Enterprising marijuana farmers have been moving their farms into U.S. National Parks for some time, and the park dept has responded with some stealthy rangers whose job it is to sneak around and catch people in the act."

I sometimes think these kind of shows have as much misinformation in them as real information, but nonetheless it's a good show.

Well, it's a case of art imitating life: Mexican cartel members were busted for setting up a grow operation in the middle of U.S. national parks. The reason they got busted? Because a conservation group was tracking the runoff from the illegal (in the U.S.) pesticides the growers were using to protect their crop from insects, and happened upon the farm.

So glad this show is back! 1 episode so far, and i'm already liking it more than last year (most likely b/c the premiere was more humor and less drama). I re-ordered Showtime basically just for this show

National Geographic Explorer had a fantastic show about pot growers in California national parks. It's pretty damn common, I think.

Who knows about the music for the guerrilla dance scene at the end? I've seen YouTubes of similar - very fun.

Really enjoyed the random fun dance scene and the juxtiposition of scary Caeser watching.
My newest gripe - Allie whatsherface -the actress who plays Celia's daughter - has lost SO much weight. I thought she was supposed to be a role model for tween girls who were comfortable with themselves, but I've heard some scary stuff about her and her drug use. OF course it's all gossip but I hope it's not true and that she just lost some baby fat.
Shane on the other hand, growing up into quite the hottie!

The best part of the episode, for me, was the reaction of everyone when they received the Celia ransom phone call. Brilliant.

I am afraid that while this show may not have jumped the shark (I thought the episode was great, funniest in a long time) but that it may have reached the point of no return.
They have taken this thing down a very dark road and there is seemingly no way for things to turn out well for Nancy or her family. At best they all end up being drug dealers of a kind they could never have imagined when she was dealing MILK weed in Agrestic. Worst, they all end up dead.
Nancy summed it up right when she said there was no escaping the bad guys, they won't be able to run away without forever having to look over their shoulders. Her family are well on their way to turning into amoral sociopaths, the notion that their mother might not come back from Mexico lead to a discussion on who gets her bedroom (and yeah, I get it that they were only masking their feelings, but they were acting like criminals, swallowing down any sense of remorse with their own need for personal gain).
Nancy makes mistakes because she does not think things through, it is the story of her life. She is eventually going to have to pay for her mistakes and find a way to salvage the lives of her family.

Admittedly, I've been *highly* critical of Weeds since Season 3, because the writing has been weak and the show fell apart.
So I watched last night's episode with my arms crossed. And to be fair, nothing's changed. Really.
Nothing is funny. No one is funny (with the exception of Kevin Nealon). The actors are boring, and the writing didn't light a fire under me.
With shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad and even Nurse Jackie (which seemed to be the new hit), mediocre shows like Weeds are going to look more horrible in comparison. I hope this is the last season and Showtime puts a bullet into this sad series that started out so fantastic.
And before anyone cops out with a "Well, don't watch it then...", let me say that I used to be a big fan of this show during the first two seasons. So if I have to suffer through horrible seasons like everyone else, you will listen to me grumble about it.
And you can choose not to read this. So skip ahead.
But cancel the series already. Put it out of my misery.

The weird part was with David Carradine strangling himself a few days earlier and the Kevins character saying he masturbated with a noose kind of was eery.

Uhhhhh saddened to see this type of "review" brought over to the Weeds show from TVS's recent Office "Reviews" of late, where you write a paragraph or two, then just go off with ramblings about the show.

Ah, thanks for the note about "Mexican gangster" - definitely adds to the fun-factor on that quote.
X - Yeah, that was a little weird about the noose thing. Then David Carradine played a character with mental issues on "Mental" tonight. Eerie.
Brent - We're just sort of testing the waters to see how much interest Weeds has.
Do you all want to see regular reviews of the show?
