I tried, I really did, to watch the new season on TLC, but a few weeks into the new season and I'm bailing. Unlike Maureen Ryan, I was a fan of Jon & Kate before their faces were splashed across US Weekly and People. Now, episodes devoted to the kids birthday parties are painfully awkward to watch. There was a brief mention in the season opener where Jon & Kate acknowledged that they were going through "some problems", but while the show can go on pretending they're one big happy family that lives for elaborate birthday parties and trips to the zoo, the rest of us can't. Now, I'm wondering, are once loyal fans also jumping ship on this show?
Watching the show now is a weak exercise in cheap schadenfreude. While I will happily take pleasure in seeing any rich housewife get skewered on Bravo, I can't watch Jon or Kate get raked over the coals with the same pleasure. Why? Because there are little kids involved. Little kids, who, for anyone like myself, that has been watching the show from the start on TLC, are just plain, normal adorable kids about to get a harsh does of reality way too early.
Before the scandals, the show was popular for another reason: it was cute, sometimes funny, sometimes heart-warming reality television. Unlike anything from the Real Housewives camp, Jon & Kate had an air of suffocating wholesomeness and cloying sweetness that became part of the show's charm. Yes, Kate yelled a lot and Jon was too laid back, but you could tell they loved the kids. Sometimes, the voyeuristic charm of watching a family do nothing more special than make treats with their (eight) kids and put them to bed is enough of a distraction on a Monday night.
Of course, that's all ruined. While the rumors of infidelity on both parents' part have saturated the tabloids, there's one story that has rarely been touched. What is all this doing to the kids? The youngest six have grown up with a TV crew following them around, which can't be healthy to their level of self-importance, and now, the cameras are capturing the disillusion dissolution of their parents marriage. There's no way this is healthy for them.
While ratings are through the roof for this season (the season premiere nabbed 9.8 million viewers) due to the added exposure, I bet there are other regular viewers who've turned away for the same reason. Watching a family with eight kids self-destruct in front off TV cameras isn't anything I want to be a part of. So, now that we're a few episodes into the season, are other once loyal fans turning away?

I definitely agree. I have watched the show since the beginning and it was always a great break from a stressful week. I am not a big fan of reality television, but I believed this show was the best that reality television had to offer and told everyone I could about it. However, watching that season premiere just about broke my heart. I've grown "attached" to the family and I struggled watching them in so much pain and controversy. I think it is time for them to sign off from the show and repair their family, and as a loyal viewer I am also going to have bow out of watching such a wonderful family self-destruct on national television.

"dissolution," not "disillusion"... I think that was what you were going for, anyways.

It was a good show when the ''8" were little. Now it's time to let the kids grow up in a normal way.
Also, I've only watched part of the first season, and a few shows since then, but, I think the show also became too much like an infomercial.

I couldn't agree more. If Jon and Kate were thinking of the children first and not the money in the bank they'd be looking for a way out. There may be contracts in place preventing that in the short-term, but the time has come for these two to get jobs and lead as normal a life as possible; even if that means a break-up.

I became disenchanted with J&K+8 the episode they moved into their mansion and continued to act like they were "just simple folks doing this on their own."
However, the exact moment I decided never to watch again was when Kate took the kids into her bedroom and declared: "Take a good look around at mommy and daddy's room because this is the LAST TIME you'll ever step foot in it."
That woman has a lot of nerve. She's allowed a camera crew to film her children's every private moment (including temper tantrum, bath time, and potty training) and she has the nerve to act like SHE earned all the money by herself. That mansion was bought on the back of her kids' childhood. If anything, they should get the master bedroom and Kate should live in the barn.
Besides that, the series has become a progression of commercials...and there's nothing fascinating about commercials to me.

Lizbeth I have two grown beautiful young women as daughters. I never once layed a hand on either of them. The rule in our house was "hands are not for hitting, they are for loving'! I didn't have 8 children, you are right, but you could give me 20 right now and I would never humiliate publicly or privately one single child. Children have egos, they have self esteem, they have pride--how dare you. I only wish you were sitting here now asking mady for that sip of water. What did she learn? No more, absolutely no more of this train reck of ten. Only prayers--please Jon open your eyes! Karma is heading Lizbeth's way! I see it on some other news show! i used to love the show when it was about the kids and them growing up and dealing with everything. now it's just a mechanism for Kate to sell books.
i stopped watching when they moved into the big house and it was clear they no longer earned a living from their jobs but from the show. that destroyed the illusion.

I was excited about the show when it began. Than I watched it and knew that a wife & mother who speaks the way Kate does must have a problem. I couldn't stand it. It's a shame. They could have been happy. I realize how hard it must be to have such a large family, esp. today but I think Kate was looking for something she didn't have when she had so many. Then she went thru a real good make over thinking she would find it and finally she thought the money would give her what she was looking for. Until she looks into herself I'm afraid her live will continue to spiral and will her families.

the whole drama is just too sad. what happened to jon & kate taking the kids to church and then to the park afterwards while living in a modest home and occasionally being treated to a spa day. kate has become obnoxious in her arrogance and jon needs to be more remorse for his part in this whole drama. they should look at the story of the Dionne quints born in canada in the 1940's and how the government explointed them by putting them on display and then abandoning them to return to a poor simple existance on the family's plot of dirt. those girls never knew a normal existance in their lives and grew up to experience alcoholism, suicide attempts, failed marriages, etc. living your early years under a microscope is not healthy for anyone and as parents, our role is to protect our children, not exploit them for the big buck. i often wonder at what point these children will review past episodes and hate their parents for exposing their most private moments to the world on television. it's hard enough for a child to grow up in today's society let alone doing it while everyone is watching and arming the bullies of the world with all of your private moments to use against you. maybe jon and kate should divorce - i don't know how they can look at the people they have become. as a sideline: "Kate, everyone does not want your haircut" - it ain't "all that".

When everyone says "oh for the kids they should end it" who do you think is going to lose out if they end the show???????? The kids they will not have the money coming in that they need to raise the kids. Lat i checked it was not affordable to raise 2 kids let alone 8. So before you say for the kids they should end it, think of the kids.

I'm pretty sure if they have any sort of a financial manager they've got enough coin saved up to live a nice middle class existence without working another day in their lives.

So, wait a second all you folks who watched this show from the start and are now in a huff... You're the problem. When the illusion worked, as someone wrote above, you were all content to live and accept that unreality. You ate it up. You aren't pissed about these kids' being exploited. You're the ones who've exploited them from the start. You just aren't getting the unreal story you wanted now because these are real people and real lives we're toying with.
It was somehow fine to exploit the children when it was wholesome exploitation? How does that work? Now that you can't pretend everything is fluffy bliss, you want out... and you all want to blame the people who should get the lion's share of the blame, the parents... but maybe, just maybe you should consider the kids in the fantasy next time BEFORE your dumbasses are dragged back to reality again... because it's called reality tv doesn't make it so.
And when you need US Weekly to guide your morality to suggest they need jobs, level heads, and not to exploit their children, the mirror's reflection you should concern yourself with should be your own.

I used to feel that Kate was a bad wife, but a good mother. Now I feel like she's bad at both, and that's why I haven't checked out any new ones.

This used to be my favorite, the show should be called "All About Kate". She sure loves the camera. She was raised in a trailer park, (has the tatoos to prove it), now she acts like she's way above and beyond all peons. She's a nag, a wacky mother, a bitchy wife, and a "big spender"
She loves the spotlight, in spite of what her kids are going through. MORE MONEY!!!

I have stopped watching. Used to love the show, the kids, the family, but agree with most of what has been said.
And, a slight case of of guilt and hypocrisy. We all keep crying exploitation, and urging the parents to step in. But in "reality"... we should all look in the mirror. There would be no show if millions of viewers did not tune in every week to watch all the exploitation.
From now on, I'm choosing to just say no.

I'm really so sick of people making a huge deal about every little minute thing that Kate or Jon does. Do you really think that your b@#$%ing is going to solve anything? Really. If you them to fade away, then stop watching the show, stop reading the articles, and stop making them desirable. One of my co-workers (PA State Police Trooper) almost hit the paparazzi outside their home in PA a week or so ago. There were so many crowded outside their property and the Trooper was told they can $10,000 for a picture of Kate. Why the hell would you people want to promote that crap???? All of your gossip is making sleezeballs like the photogs rich. My vote is to just let the Gosselins fade. Hopefully their children can be normal someday.

okay Jon, you promised you would never do another show when your children indicated they didn't want to do it anymore. Take a look at U-tube where right before the shooting started Maddy asked for some water. Kate refused her the water, then asked one of her assistants to throw her a bottle of water, took a big sip and with held it from Maddy! Kate in the most hostile way looked at the younger children (with the most reprehensible face and ordered them to sit still.
Next, it is revealed that Kate grabbed one of the young girls, hit her on her bottom as the young child tried to shield herself while crying out loud. Finally the two 8 year olds were asked what they thought of their parents. The silence was deafening--Cara answered in a voice you couldn't hear. Maddy said "well, they are okay, but I still like Daddy better.
I will not watch one more episode of Kate getting increasingly out of hand with the children. They can never come into the parents room again? Is she kidding? What if one of the children is in danger? Kate is acting like a very scary mother. She drinks a huge sip of water ONLY after Maddy says she is thirsty, she "spanks" little 5 year old and then remarks "I will discipline my children as i see fit!" With her increasing anger, I am beginning to fear for the safety and certainly the welfare of these children. Jon, PLEASE get back to those kids before someone gets hurt! It wouldn't surprise if CPS got called out there pretty soon.
