You know, if your casting director says he's looking for a middle-aged guy to play "an unassuming, mild-mannered suburbanite" who also happens to have also been a prolific serial killer for almost three decades, damn if there isn't a better choice than John Lithgow. And it looks like our own Mr. Morgan will be going head-to-head with him as John Lithgow has been cast in Dexter for its fourth season. Lithgow is a master, able to play every type of role you can imagine. He could dabble a bit of Pastor Footloose for his crazier side, adding in a smidge of Dick Solomon (3rd Rock From the Sun) for his everyday persona. But only a little, otherwise you've got crazy on both sides. Or maybe you want that. Dexter's fascination with Lithgow's character "Trinity" (dubbed thus for killing in threes) is how he's managed to be such a prolific killer and yet avoid capture for so long. I'm more interested in Lithgow's daily life. Is he married? Kids? And if so, how does he juggle so much "normalcy" with his extracurricular activities. Regardless of how it's presented, I think it should make for an awesome face-off.

I am excited about this casting, but I do hope they can do something other than Dexter meeting another unbalanced person and having to kill them at the end of the season.

John played a fabulous serial killer early on in his movie career. In 1981 Brian DePalma cast him as the 'politically convenient' hitman in the assassination-based thriller "Blow Out" starring John Travolta. Lithgow's performance as the 'Liberty Bell' killer was truly, and memorably creepy. Who ever heard of people being strangled by a wrist watch?! Terrific performance, and a terrific plot device as well. Can't wait for Dex's new season!

You beat me to it, I was going to mention Blow Out - I was living in center-city Philadelphia at the time, just west of Rittenhouse Square, and actually saw Lithgow's phone-booth scene being filmed a few blocks east. (Didn't know who he was at the time.)

Since they renewed Dexter for two seasons this time, I think they'll probably not tie things up neatly at the end of this one. If we're lucky we'll get two years with Lithgow.

I can't believe you didn't mention that Special Agent Lundy (Keith Carradine) is also sure to be back since he's the reason Trinity relocates to Miami. Lundy was also an outstanding addition to Dexter. Not only did he add a lot of heat to Dexter himself but he sure heated up things with Deb too!
The addition of John Lithgow is a stroke of genius though. He's a fantastic actor and I think many have forgotten just how evil many of his early roles were after we were exposed to his comic brilliance on Third Rock. Bring it on!!!

Loved Jimmy Smits Miguel Prado character and looking forward to Lithgow's Walter Simmons. This show just gets better and better. Just wish it were more than 12 episodes per season.
