It looks like Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui, the director of the original movie, to create a remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The trick is, they're not involving the creator or any of the original cast of the television series. In fact, they're not even basing it on the television series. If ever there was a recipe for disaster, this is it. McG's proposed version of Spaced sucked eggs for similar reasons (a failure to grasp what made it successful). This could potentially work if you took out the word "Buffy" from the title and didn't try to sully the name of the franchise, but otherwise, I don't see it.
Of course, it is early in the process. There are a million ways that this horrific idea can die an early death, which would sure beat the embarrassment of the certain death of nobody going to see this movie.

I want the TV cast, like James Marsters as Spike.

As emphatically as possible: NO!
Call it something else, but it's not Buffy without Whedon. (And the TV cast is just about perfect, so don't mess with that either.)

I wonder why Joss never bought the Buffy rights from Kuzui. I'd think he certainly got big enough to buy it from them. Seems like Joss isn't that smart of a business man. Once Buffy became big, I'd certainly want to buy the rights. Then there's all the back history of doing business with Fox, and what does he do? Goes back to them and puts another show on Fox. Joss, what are you doing?

I'd imagine rights are a free market. Just because you want the doesn't mean they're up for sale.
Furthermore, Eliza signed a deal with Fox THEN bought Joss on board.

It's pretty much accepted truth by now that it was a mistake for Joss to go with Fox and Dushku for Dollhouse. She is just not that strong of an actress to lead the show, and Fox programming execs are brain dead if they are tasked with programming anything other than 24, American Idol, or House.

It won't work without the TV cast, also, as nice as a movie would be if the TV cast were involved, I would just be depressed once it was over probably. I wish this show was still on the air, talk about quality production.

Why on earth not?
The TV series came after the film so why not make another film - it's not like Adam We had any hold over Batman.

This doesn't matter in any way. A remake of a movie that had nothing to do with the TV series somehow in someway mars the TV series HOW?

The movie SUCKED! Why in God's name would they remake that? This can't possibly be right and even if it is it isn't right.

Since this is the movie they are remaking and not the show I dont really have a problem with this. The movie may have sucked but vampires are the in thing right now so from a business perspective it could be a good idea.
If it was the TV show though I'd be pissed and I mean pissed off like those trekkies were about the new film. Maybe I shouldn't of make fun of them in hindsight :/. Then again this is guarunteed to suck and that had JJ Abrams.

I can see the pitch now.
"It's not a sequel, a prequel, a carry-over, or a continuation. It's a REBOOT. Picture this: an aging Willow accidentally transports herself and a powerful enemy back through time to the moment just before Buffy awakens as a Slayer. Giles is killed. Dramatic changes ensue, so that nothing plays out like you expect based on the first movie or the 6 season TV show. It's a DIFFERENT UNIVERSE, with all the same characters, but slightly different personalities and different stories. It's the same but DIFFERENT.
"We might have to dress Alison Hannigan up as an old-lady version of the Willow from the TV show, so that we have a little bit of credibility with those crazy Whedonite fans who may very likely start a torch-and-pitchfork campaign once they hear about this.
"Have I blown your mind yet?"

Didn't you know, that all the other Trek movies and TV Series were just a dream, that the world is collectively waking up from.

The Trek remake, no matter how good would have never happened, at least in its current form, with Gene Roddenberry alive, this is completely different, if they want a Buffy movie then they have to use Joss, or his fans will protest, maybe even at the theaters.

It's a pure insult to the great reputation Buffy the Vampire Slayer as made for it self. The original movie failed because of the cast and piss weak production skills. As a director my self i strongly believe the past should stay the past and if you wanna make a vampire movie change the name and come up with your own screenplay.

Well since the movie came first, i don't see how a remake would have any effect on the show. The show was based off the movie, not the other way around, so it makes complete sense that they would not use the tv cast in a new film. I'll go see it, just for the simple fact that watching the original Buffy was a great part of my childhood =D
