Reality giant Simon Cowell confesses to 'black moods'

Simon CowellExperts say one of every three adults experiences depression periodically in a lifetime. If a recent interview in the U.K.'s Daily Mail is on the level, it looks like Simon Cowell could use a prescription or two.

According to the interview, Cowell confesses he's "quite odd" and subject to "dark moods" that come on for no reason.

That could just be a celebrity waxing philosophical, but if you look up the basic symptoms of clinical depression, it sounds like Cowell is ticking off a checklist. He admits that he avoids social contact for days on end and avoids pleasurable activities. It's almost as if he's calling for an intervention.

Perhaps it's all a lesson in the concept of "money doesn't buy happiness," as Cowell made his comments from inside his $16 million Beverly Hills mansion. He flies from there to his U.K. home on a weekly basis while shooting reality shows on multiple continents.

His down moods might explain why he's so brutal to many American Idol contestants. It's rare to meet a happy person so eager to ravage his fellow humans.
