The CW has opted to move next season's Smallville to Friday nights at 8 p.m. I have long stated that the series should be put to rest and I believe, without actually saying so, The CW is doing just that. The show hasn't been doing great on Thursdays ratings-wise, and I'll bet The CW is now probably experimenting with it to see if the show garners similar ratings on a traditionally dead night. I think the show's demise is proven even further by its follow-up show being the encore of America's Next Top Model, because the demographics are soooooo similar (not). I plan to switch over to Dollhouse at 9.
My question is: if it is the last season of the series, will The CW give the creators adequate notice to have a decent series finale, or will we be left with a cliffhanger a la The Sarah Connor Chronicles? Just once before the show ends, to give it a sense of closure, I'd like to see Tom Welling don a cape and fly.

Isn't Smallville getting another set of showrunners next season? First the creators left. and then the new showrunners left to create another series. If the new guys are smart, they should state that season 9 is the final season before the cancellation axe comes...or even to bring back the fans for a final flight.
Q: What was the last show that was moved to Friday to die?
A: Star Trek: Enterprise

A. Actually the last show was Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Enterprise was stillborn. It just took the network heads a couple years to realize it.

I read somewhere this was considered the series final season, but don't know how accurate that is. I do agree: it's time to end this series. Moreover, if they end it without Welling donning the cape and trademark hair curl fans will rightly be pissed. No other type of ending would be satisfactory.

I'd like to see the series end without Clark ever wearing the full costume. The last scene should be of him holding the costume up to his chest looking in a mirror, and then have the scene shift to 10 to 15 years later, shirt unbuttoned revealing the big red S and Lois yelling "Be careful!" before he zips away to a burning building.

thats a good idea but at least let him take his first flight for the fans and not some fohny ass hypo jump into the stratosphere or super fall from the sky where the lucky companion doesn't even get so much as a bruise but seriously the show has been way to slow even for a potato(couch)

Thought the same thing. It's as if they WANT it to fail.
Then again Dollhouse got a renewal and I think we'll see a 10th season of Smallville just because the CW wants to keep a dead horse alive

I don't watch "Smallville" but I have a little bit of sympathy for those who still do and want to watch it till it gets a proper series finale. I watched "The X-Files" from the begginning and even when people said it was past its prime when it moved to L.A./Duchovny left, I still watched the series up to its series finale. I agree that its a bit of a slap to the face for a series that's been on as long as it has that it gets put on Friday night to die a lonely death.

I just read that Dawn Ostroff wants Smallville to live on for more seasons!! I'm probably the biggest Smallville apologist, but after this latest lame season finale SV really needs to die. I also read that they had a tough time getting Tom Welling to agree to a 9th season, so hopefully he has the sense to pull the plug even if the network doesn't.

They need to do the one tree hill/desperate houswives jump forward 5 years. Skip college or whatever and get these characters into their adult lives.

You know, the no tights no flights rule applied when he was 15 years old and no one knew how long the show was going to last, but
THIS IS FREAKING RIDICULOUS... We just ended SEASON 8!!
The man is 23 years old! Even in the crappiest comics he flew by 18. COME ON ALREADY!

I'm not sure what you mean by "The show hasn't been doing great on Thursdays ratings-wise." I thought its ratings were the only reason it was still on the air, as it's much more expensive than the network's younger shows. The CW gets lower ratings than the big four overall, and Smallville is its highest-rated scripted show and second highest-rated show total (second only to ANTM). If it wasn't, I'm sure it would have been canceled after season 5.

It's still one of their highest rated shows, so I doubt they want it to die. It's just that the new show, Vampire Diaries, is a more logical lead in for Supernatural, and is more likely to get a better chance at life in the position. I mean, seriously, where were they going to put it? Any ideas given *this* lineup?
Day/ Time
Monday
8-9p Gossip Girl
9-10p One Tree Hill
Tuesday
8-9p 90210
9-10p Melrose Place
Wednesday
8-9p America’s Next Top Model
9-10p The Beautiful Life
Thursday
8-9p The Vampire Diaries
9-10p Supernatural
Friday
8-9p Smallville
9-10p America’s Next Top Model (encore)

To be honest I really don't want the story to end, but if it does just move the show, from Smallville to Metropolis, and call the show METROPOLIS... and have him working at the Daily Planet and dating Lois and shit like that as Superman...I think that would be cool as hell

I have been watching Smallville from the beginning. This is the first show I have watched for this long. Normally I watch a few seasons of a show and eventually stop watching because it gets lame. Well I can honestly say this was the first bad season of Smallville in all 8 seasons.
I will give the writers and actors the benefit of the doubt that this season will be good but it pisses me off that they might end the show on Fridays like it hasnt been the best show on the network for years now
