I'll admit that I haven't seen Twilight (nor read the books), but for those of you who have, doesn't this preview of The CW's Vampire Diaries look a lot like the Twilight movie? Similar premise, similar characters, same banter/threats between the good bloodsucker and the bad, even a similar scene where one flies and rams his body into the other's body. This is based on a series of novels too, though I don't know which book series came first.

But anything that brings Ian Somerhalder back on TV is a good thing. :-)

The Vampire Diaries is at least 10 years old. I remember reading them in junior high.

The Vampire Diaries were first by a long shot. I read these back in middle school which was a long time ago! They came out in '91-'92.

As others have mentioned, The Vampire Diaries have been around for awhile, and Twilight is really just a rip off of this series.

regardless of who came first...that inner dialogue with the chick just sucked. Is is she supposed to sound like an delusional aspiring "writer" who never bothered to take a creative writing class in her high school? Because that's what high schoolers write when they think they're being lofty.

I suspect the popularity of Twilight played a big role in getting this picked up. Even if Twilight is a rip-off, its success is likely what helped sell the earlier property. So, in that way, you might think of it as a rip-off or a rip-off of a rip-off.
Regardless, I don't think I'll be watching.

As some people have mentioned that Vampire Diaries is out because of the success of Twilight, that's not actually true. The Vampire Diaries and the Nightworld books films were in discussion long before Twilight was even written, it was due to personal issues of the writer "L.J. Smith " was having.

Bob - You should probably research your material before printing your blog, since it takes a matter of seconds to find out which series - Twilight or Vampire Diaries - came first. Just needed something to print today? Your right that similarities exist, though. That should make you feel good. *grin*

On top of that he's using a 3 minute clip to draw comparisons to basically another 3 minute clip, since by his own admission he never saw the Twilight movie or read the books, so his only basis for comparison is the trailers for Twilight. Was any of this post necessary at all?
"Here's some stuff I don't know anything about and didn't bother to do 30 seconds worth of research for...discuss!"

To answer your question, No. Teen vampires. That is about as close as the 2 are. Kind of like comparing Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Oh wait..never mind.

Even if Vampire Diaries came out way before Twilight, some of the dialouge and the characterization look a lot like just Edward and Bella all over again. Not digging the girl, but I love Ian Somerhalder. Anything to bring him back to me on TV is great. Great departure from Boone.

Vampire Diaries came 14 years before Twilight. Vampire Diaries are from 1991, Twilight is from 2005.

I was just wondering the same thing. seeing the extended preview it looks so much better than the twilight movies although i still enjoyed the twilight books but im begining to think that stephenie meyer may have ripped this off from the author of the vampire diaries... maybe she had read them and had a dream about it and thought that she could make a best seller out of it even tho that it was already a book like it? i dont know what to think about this but i will definately read the vampire diaries and watch the show, afterall i believe that the show looks better than any twilight movie they will ever make...no offense to twilight lovers im one to just not of the movies....

Regardless of which came first I think Twilight will always be more popular. I have seen Twilight and read all four books and it's an interesting series. I haven't read any Vampire Diaries books actually I didn't even hear about Vampire diaries until Twilight blew up and became popular. Suddenly, I'm watching CW and I see their commercial and it's EXTREMELY similar to Twilight. Even if it came first, I think Twilight's choice of cast and plot will attract more people.. Although, I look at it like this. Once

Although, I look at it like this: Once Twilight is done making it's movies what's left? Vampire Diaries. The fact that it's a TV series is even better. Hopefully, it'll be successful. So I think Stephenie Meyers helped Vampire Diaries in the long run.
