Star Trek is Star Wars (not really, but this is funny)
First let me say that I loved the new big screen Star Trek movie. But I have to admit that this video below from CollegeHumor is rather accurate. Maybe it's just because of the genre and the characters and not lazy storytelling.

They missed some even more obvious Star Wars scenes - like the Ice Planet, the monster being eaten by the larger one, and a few of the new "alien" faces.

They were comparing Star Wars: A New Hope with Star Trek. The scenes you're refering to were from later sequels.

I'm gonna go with some combination of lazy storytelling, and over-reliance on the Hero's tale theme. Plenty of scifi lacks this pattern, so it's not the genre.

Hmm, take characters from a proven franchise, cast younger actors for a "prequel" and graft them into an existing plotline that's the opening to another existing, proven franchise.
Looks like lazy writing paired with shameless marketing to me.

I'm going to go with lazy storytelling, personally. Funny video.
