(S08E22) Let me start with the obvious question: why is the middle name of the eldest Olsen boy the same as the first name of the youngest?Obviously, the creators of Smallville wanted to create an unseen twist to the myth while at the same time giving a giant middle finger to the comic book geeks who are concerned that the show isn't following established continuity.
I'll give them points on the twist of having the elder Henry James Olsen not be the same James Bartholomew Olsen that later joins the Daily Planet (was the bowtie on the younger enough of a hint?). As much as I hate to admit this, it makes more sense for that because in the comics it is pretty well established that Clark and Jimmy have a far greater age difference than Clark and Henry James.
Actually, they got me twice: first, by revealing Clark's secret to Jimmy (I dug when Jimmy used the phrase "Super ... guy") and then by having Jimmy killed. Either situation would have rocked the Superman myth to its core had they not wussed out with the "older brother" ending.
I don't recall Edge City in the Superman or even DC Comics mythos. Has it been used in the comics?
Obviously, Cosmic Boy and the Legion of Super History Professors have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to Clark's death. Maybe Lois can teach them a thing or two now that she's stuck there.
I liked the callback to the previous episode when Tess mentioned Lois in a maid outfit. The all-too-brief girlfight was kind of disappointing in the age of Buffy. Still, that's probably what a girlfight would be more like in real life.
How the hell could Jimmy afford a Metropolis apartment that overlooks the city on a photographer (and then junkie's) salary? Wouldn't he have sold it to get some cash to buy drugs? I'm just saying.
I was kind of hoping for the fight between Clark and Doomsday to last longer since they've been building to it for the whole season. I guess they didn't have the CGI budget. At first I thought they were breaking the "no flights" rule at the end, then I realized it was just a super-leap. It's kind of ironic that ultimate psycho boyfriend Davis ended up being as much a monster as Doomsday.
By the way, Doomsday does still exist, albeit buried in concrete. I can see them hauling him out in the future and just saying the Legion got the date wrong.
Poor Chloe is a widow without ever being married. How can actresses cry on demand like that?
It was nice to see the Justice League together again, echoing the season premiere. Not much else to say about that.
Did I mention that I actually enjoyed tonight's finale? Sure, it still had the usual stomach-turning melodrama, but it had more action and some good twists, as well as a lot of slow-motion walking (new drinking game: whenever someone in Smallville walks away from someone else in slow motion, take a drink). I guess we know that Zor-El is the Big Bad for next season. See you then.

I was disappointed with the finale. The fight between Clark and Doomsday had been building all season, the producers promised a fight to end all fights and we got nothing! Doomsday gets a few shots in, then Clark super-jumps or perhaps he was flying to blow up Doomsday?
Also I was hoping for Clark to at least get mad at Oliver a little but nothing.
Usually Smallville has a good finale but this one left a lot to be desired. I also did catch the little brother angle, thought it was a little bit of a copout to be honest.
I'm not one of these fans who usually bash this show, I liked most of this season, even the Lana arc!
I'm not one of those people who say they won't watch again because I will but I will lower my expectations a little.

The season really started incredible and with a lot of promise (which paid off by getting them a season renewal), but the 2nd half really collapsed on itself. And if this episode was anything like what they planned on ending the series with then I'd be fine if they were gone for good.
It's a real shame because I think a lot of people who gave up on the show got hooked with such a great start of the season, but in the end they really don't have the consistency to do exciting, coherent television. Especially nowadays were clever plot twists and well budgeted special effects are common.

Yeah, the Jimmy twist was surprising, I'm not saying it was good, especially for a family to have two children named Jimmy, but it was surprising. So, the guy came from a 1000 years in the future to tell Clark that nothing on the planet can kill Doomsday.....except for an exploding building? Like most of Smallville, the build up was good, but the execution was terrible.
It was like last season's finale when Lex and Clark finally meet in the fortress and the tension that has been building up the entire series is finally exposed....for 30 seconds.
Why don't the just end this show, it is like the English Patient, I just want it to die.

I gotta give credit to the Smallville producers for killing off Jimmy Olsen. Earlier in the episode, I thought it was pretty cool that Jimmy learned Clark's secret. I envisioned a season where he would essentially be "The Red Blue Blur's Pal Jimmy Olsen", helping Clark fight bad guys and prevent Lois from getting too close to the truth about him. Alas, they had another fate in mind for Mr. Olsen. I've spent most of his time on the show complaining about what a whiny and unlikeable character he was. But I think I'm gonna miss the punk. He bought Chloe her very own watchtower and everything! I also thought it was a nice touch for Chloe to give Jimmy's younger brother (who was wearing a bow tie BTW) his camera at the funeral. Maybe we'll see the younger Olsen at the Planet in the Smallville future.
As for the episode in general, it was equal parts good and bad. The Clark/Doomsday battle was extremely anticlimactic. Clark gets the crap punched out of him, and then he superleaps Doomsday into the power plant. And that's it! Blah. This episode needed to be at least 10 minutes longer so we could get at least a decent fight between the two. On the bright side, I liked seeing Cosmic Boy again (even though his arrival was abrupt, and the opening scene was overly dramatic), and the Tess/Lois battle was pretty cool. It was also great to see Clark try to lead Black Canary and Impulse, even if they stabbed him in the back later on. And again, Jimmy's death was out of nowhere and ballsy.
The cliffhangers were frustrating mostly because I don't want to wait until Sept to see them resolved. Clark's rejection of his human side shows how far he's come as a character. For most of the series he's resisted playing hero, prefering to play house with Lana instead. He used to put his personal needs and wants first, and the last thing he wanted was to be a "Kryptonian". Now it's the reverse. Clark's (presumably) going to play hero 24/7 around the world. Yeah, he's still being mopey and full of self loathing like always, but at least he'll be putting his powers to good use.
I get why Clark blames himself for Jimmy's death. If he had buried Doomsday before Chloe used the black kryptonite, or if he sent him to the Zone when he had the chance, then Jimmy would still be alive. Then again, Clark can't save anyone all the time, and how could he have known that Davis would go crazy anyway? But even with that I think Clark overreacted. Yeah, humans can suck, and Davis' actions in the end show that. But just because Clark couldn't save him doesn't mean he can't redeem other villains. Wasn't he doing good as the Red Blue Blur? Wasn't he a symbol of hope and all that crap? And isn't it Clark's humanity what makes him the hero he is? Is he going to kill villains who he thinks are irredeemable now? I just wonder if Clark will value human life like he used to, and judging by his comments at the end of the episode, he might not.
Then again, the more I think about it, Clark failed to really redeem villians like Lex, Lionel, and Davis. Bette went back to the dark side after he supposedly turned around earlier this season. He watched Oliver become a killer, and numerous other meteor freaks have died on Clark's watch. He's kinda sucked as a hero, so maybe a new approach might help. Maybe Jor-El was right all along.
And oh yeah, I guess Zod is back judging by the final seconds of the finale. As much as I love him in the comics, I really want to see new villains on the show. But hey, at least we'll get a rematch between Clark and Zod. Not that there's any guarantee it'll be a good one.

I really liked the idea of Jimmy replacing Chloe as the sidekick. He worked at the planet as a photographer so he could pick and choose which photos to use, he was positioned perfectly to hide Clarks secret from Lois, the humor potential was huge and there isn't a forced non-sexual relationship like there is with Chloe/Clark.
It really would have given the show the well needed shaking because the character relationships have been pretty stale for a while now.

I don't think Cosmic Boy got the date wrong. Clark would have died had Cosmic Boy not travelled back to warn him. Since he warned Clark, it changed his future.

I wasn't paying that close attention, but did his parents call young "Jimmy" Jimmy? Or was it just Chloe?
I liked how the twist ended up. I never like this version of Jimmy they showed in the TV show compared to the Jimmy we all know. So I'm glad this is how they played it out.
Overall, good finale ep but I agree the Doomsday fight was a bit of a let down. I'm hoping next season we see a full transformation of Clark into the Clark/Superman we see. And at this point, don't you think it's time to drop the no tights rule?

I've been watching Smallville since Day 1 and I'm no longer surprised by the lackluster finales. That being said, the whole Jimmy Olsen was a total cop-out and lazy on the part of the writers and producers. I've been saying this for a couple years, but maybe it really is time for Smallville to hang up the cape.

I'm the oldest of three boys, and my middle name is the same as my youngest brother's first name: John. It's a family name (both grandfathers, one uncle on each side, and probably others in previous generations).

Seriously. My first comment was "That was the finale?!" I love the show don't get me wrong. I am totally invested in the characters, especially Chloe. She's incredible. But this finale was crap.
As stated above, the lame-@ss battle between Doomsday and Clark... that sucked. Is "epic" not in the writers vocabulary?!
I was caught off guard by Jimmy's death. I was actually anticipating the usual lets-go-back-in-time-and-make-it-so-it-didn't-happen crap. So I actually missed out on the emotional response.
Cloe is amazing. As a character and (Allison Mack) as an actress. And why does she always get screwed over by everyone!?!? It's amazing how much she can put up with and still be a true HERO.
Lois? Where.....? When....?
Davis. Strange there. I understand the feelings, but I don't know that the reponse matched who he was. Perhaps though he changed fundamentally during his transformation into Doomsday. But what about the black kryptonite? shouldn't that have removed the "bad" side of him, like Jekyll and Hyde? Whatever, probably best for him anyways. Not for Jimmy though.
Jimmy. Not so happy with his story arc. I understand most of it I guess. But to end with his death just so the viewers will cry. Seem pointless to me. Why must someone be killed during the finales? How necessary was it, really? I like Jimmy. It was good to see Chloe finally have her chance at happiness. Oh, wait, nevermind, let's screw over Chloe again. It's what we do...
And regarding the previous tights comment... probably not a good idea. Though he would look great in tights, other superhero attempts at tights and costumes only ends in disaster. Not recommended.

I don't think the was CK we were seeing at the end. What is the point of bringing in Doomsday if Superman survives? That and he couldn't answer Chloe on how he got out of the explosion that took down Doomsday.
I wonder if the can get Shaq to guest star next season.

It's probably fitting that the Smallville episode on HDNet was "Combat" where Clark had a 5 minute long fight scene with a guy from the phantom zone who many suspected was the SV parallel to Doomsday. I liked the new direction the show is heading, but without Gough and Millar the action sequences are sorely missing. As for "Jimmy" dying, Aaron Ashmore was my favorite actor on the show by far. Now with him gone and this new darker Green Arrow, who is gonna bring the comic relief? I also read somewhere recently that the only person left involved with the show against donning the tights is Tom Welling himself. I'm inclined to agree with him. When he gets the costume and the title, the whole premise of Smallville is over. I think he should get flight next season, and get the cape in the last few minutes of the series finale.

I'm lost but when did anyone mention that the younger brother had the same name as Jimmy? I've just watched it and at no time is the little guy's name even mentioned. It's a cop out if he decides to use his older brothers name in memory not to mention an insult to fans who have wanted Chloe and Lois to switch names basically.
That was one of the worst finales ever, the justice league turning on Clark like that, Oliver a murder?
The watch tower, looked like the Clocktower from Birds of Prey it seemed, anyone agree?

This was the WORSTE Smallville season finale ever. Are they trying to turn fans away? I don't care that Henry James Olsen died, or that Davis was an actual lunatic, but the whole Doomsday storyline was nothing but an after thought. How could they build up an after thought to reveal the real story behind the story?
Clark finally realizes that his human side is a detriment to his ability, his destiny? That was the big story this year? I'm so disappointed. Maybe next season, with Clark Kent gone, Kal El will be more Eradicator like. If they want to make Kal El the supreme law of the land for the season then so be it. That would be fine with me.
And Edge City is in the comic. That is where Bart/Flash is from. It's like the LA of DC comics. And I don't think that was Zor El, but Zod. Doomsday was his creation you know.

I kind of like the finale. I like the sort of redemption of Ollie, as he sees his mistakes, or at least that's what it looks like. I don't like that they made him out a murderer as everyone knows Lex survived.
I also like the spin they did on Jimmy, as I always thought it was weird that he was the same age as everyone else. Seeing his kid brother made it ok with me, didn't bother me that much.
On the Doomsday front, I get the "No-Fight" because, really, Clark would die. That's how that fight ends. If you look back to the comics, Doomsday was buried underground (different circumstances) but it kind of aligns it to that. I don't think I'm ready to see an all out brawl with Doomsday, as that seems like Superman's fight, and right now, clearly, Clark is not Superman.
I want to know what the whole Lois issue was about. I don't get it. Seems like a waste.
Also, CK was acting weird about the Doomsday incident. I'm guessing there is a Legion story about him being pulled out in time. That's what I thought.

Another really LAME thing; Tess and Lois fight. Both of these ladies can really throw down but their fight turned into a hair pulling, cat scratching, girls rolling everywhere fight. And how did tess get KO'd so easily? She's tougher then that. Fire all your writers and get better!

- The fight between Lois and Tess: hot.
- Lois going TO THE FUTURE: dumb and wasted her character.
- No Doomsday fight: dumb and wasted my time
- Jimmy annoyed me so maybe this ending is for the best but the Olsen household must of been a confusing place to live when all your children go by Jimmy.
- Chloe on Smallville = Abby Lockhart on ER. Seriously they are both characters that get s%&t on by the writers week after week.
- Cosmic Boy was right Clark did die. Metaphorically, now he is just Kal El I guess.
- If you took a shot everytime ther is a slow motion on Smallville you would die from alcohol poisoning.
- Was this the worse finale ever: No that would go to Artic, which sucked long and hard. This sucked as a finale but was good in terms of recent episodes. The show never fully recovered quality wise from that Lana arc.
- The cliffhanger in the end was too left field. Zod (not Zor El Brad they said Zod 1000 times in that 12 seconds and you didnt hear it once?) Same as last weeks ending: it made no sense and was unrelated to the rest of the episode.
