If you've been following my Jane After Dark adventures, you know it's all about the DVDs I watch into the wee hours while I'm covering the TV Squad queue and everyone else (at least in my house) is sleeping. I've finished Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I'm nearly done with Angel. I'll post this weekend about season five of Angel. You guys are absolutely right. It's awesome TV.
After that, I need you to help me choose my next Jane After Dark series. There are so many great TV shows on DVD, and frankly, I'm stumped at what to watch next. So please vote in my poll below, and tell me what to do! And if you don't see your series listed, tell me in the comments, and I'll add it to the list next time.

While ordinarily, i would immediately vote for Firefly...i think you need a "palatte cleanser" in between these Whedon shows. so, voted for Veronica Mars.

I voted Firefly only to give you the full Whedon spectrum and it is a short season. After that Dexter and then to lighten things up Veronica Mars. I don not know the other series but I believe both the Shield and the Wire are pretty dark.

I voted for Firefly...it's a single season but it sucks you in. Be prepared to watch the movie too. It helps get you past the fact that there are only a limited number of episodes. I wanted to suggest La Femme Nikita.

I love Firefly and really got into Veronica Mars, so my recommendation would definitely be a toss up between the two.
The only other one I've seen any of is The Shield, which is an excellent show, but I despised most of the characters and felt like the few decent characters on the show always got screwed over rather harshly, so I found myself really angry at that show most of the time. The commentary tracks are usually hilarious, though.

I'm not sure what you have or haven't seen on the whole, but here are some of my favorites that are missing in the poll:
Sci-Fi: Battle Star Galactica (Ronald Moore's re-make is the best sci-fi viewing since Firefly.)
Comedy/Drama: Dead Like Me and/or Wonderfalls (both from Bryan Fuller, the creator of Pushing Daisies)
Straight Drama: Six Feet Under (definitely a must-watch if you're going to watch Dexter, Anthony Michael Hall is AMAZING in both.)
Family: Avatar: The Last Airbender (unbelieveably smart cartoon series from Nickelodeon filled with as much emotion as there is action.)

Anthony Michael Hall?!
I think you mean Michael C. Hall, although it's sort of interesting to imagine Anthony Michael Hall in the roles.

I'd go with Dexter, just for a big game changer, and a huge change of pace from Whedon.
Then on to FireFly - it is so short, you'll be done in a week or so.
Then onto Veronica Mars for a few more weeks.

You picked four of my all-time favorites in the poll: The Wire, Veronica Mars, The Shield, and Firefly. I'd go with Veronica Mars to start, though.

Right off the bat, I'd suggest Dexter. The seasons are a bit shorter, but flow more naturally. There's only three seasons so far, though- the first two are out on DVD but the third should be dropping by September.
The thing about Veronica Mars is, no matter how many fans it has, it really has one great season (the first), then the second gets kind of choppy and the third season pretty much was all sadness.
The newer Battlestar Galactica (2003) series is frakking awesome, if you haven't caught those yet. Start with the original miniseries, then pick up Season 1.
I've been getting the Night Court DVDs via Netflix lately, and they amuse me with how well they (mostly) stand up with time.
I just finished the first three seasons of Supernatural (on DVD through Netflix) and found once I got through the first season, it grew on me.
I've been waiting for the last six months to get into the first season of Breaking Bad. Alas, the first disc is perpetually listed as "Very Long Wait". I've only seen the first episode, which l left me intrigued.
And have you checked out Arrested Development? Everyone has been (rightfully) raving about how quirky and funny it is. I recently saw the first season and loved it.
Not sure if you've seen it, but How I Met Your Mother has been one of the funniest shows on television the last few years. Start with season 1 and work your way forward. By the time you reach season 2, I guarantee you'll be hooked.
Other series to check out: Big Bang Theory, Samatha Who?, Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies
The series you should avoid unless you ENJOY being depressed is the very over-hyped, over-rated Six Feet Under.

Veronica Mars!! Honestly, the first season is nothing short of a revelation and incorporates many of the best elements of Whedonverse shows (strong female character, well-plotted season-long arc, awesome dialogue, etc.)
Also, I would whole-heartedly recommend Battlestar (especially if you're a Lost fan) and Alias, which probably has my second favorite first season in all of tv history (after aforementioned VM).
The first season of Roswell is really good, but it drops off BIG TIME in seasons 2 & 3.
Dexter is also a really cool show to watch that I think gets better each season - Michael C. Hall just nails the character (as he does in Six Feet Under, as aforementioned, albeit wrongly credited to Anthony Michael Hall). That show also has the bonus of not being canceled, so you can pick it back up when it returns.
Personally, for my summer, I'm going to finally tackle the Wire and....something else TBD.

I voted for Firefly, it's easy to watch and there is the movie to finish it off!
Veronica Mars would have been my choice if Firefly was not there, but stop after the second season.
For the not on the list: Battlestar and Arrested Development.

Those are all good shows to watch so it was hard to choose but I picked Firefly since it is the shortest and then you can start another show.
Firefly, then Dexter, then Veronica Mars, and then The Wire (the last two are over so I figure there's no hurry to catch up, which is the only reason why Dexter came before them).
I've never seen The Shield but I hear it's good. As others have said, you should throw Battlestar Galactica on the table.

Um, I this is what we like to call a no-lose situation, any one of these shows (except maybe Roswell, but I don't know, I haven't seen that show) are excellent choices, so watch them all!
