Reaper: To Sprong, With Love

Reaper(S02E11) While tonight's episode had some cute bits, I have to say that it wasn't one of the best. I blame the serious lack of Ray Wise. He did shine for a moment when he convinced that guy to buy his fiance a cubic zirconia instead of a diamond, but that was about it.

In fact, the more I watch the series the more I'm becoming convinced that Sam and Andi are the least interesting aspect of the show (can't they just get together already?). Sock remains interesting via his outrageous behavior, Ben remains interesting in his metrosexuality, and Ray Wise totally rocks as the Devil. I'm hoping they're saving more of him for the season finale.

I love how Ted could make Sock become a tool and Sock enjoys it. There is some sort of hidden revenge in that for years of mistreatment.

To the creators: please, please don't make Sock dance like that again. I can see that clip going on YouTube before too long.

On a separate note, what kind of name is Sprong? I believe it's a real surname, but it's kind of strange. The man was so nasty, I almost wished the soul had killed him in a form of ironic justice. This was a teacher?

Still, Sprong must be a pretty committed teacher to be alone at the school at night. That was pretty suspicious to me, even if he wasn't an escaped soul. Perhaps the Devil wanted to protect Sprong because he was committing some horrible, evil acts that didn't even involve haranguing the schoolchildren (which would just be a fortuitous happenstance).

I've been complaining as of recent that the escaped souls don't seem to have powers anymore, but obviously that was just a fad. This one went easy on the special effects budget with the relatively inexpensive power of invisibility that also came across as teleportation.

The episode had two major shortcomings that I could tell. The first is that the cuts were somewhat sloppy and kind of "shocked" me back to reality instead of keeping me in the story. The second was that certain plot points were kind of predictable to me (like giving Sprong the vessel and Nina rubbing her pheromones over Ben and the smackdown between Wrenchy Bench and the Bargain Bench Hammer, although revealing it as an old woman was a nice touch. She fights well for her age).

It was very A-Team for Sock and Ben to construct an Iron Man outfit from materials at the Work Bench so Ben can defend Nina's honor as she goes through Demon Pon Farr. Perhaps Sock missed his calling as a builder or carpenter.

How can Ben promise Nina not to die? Doesn't everybody die eventually? It could be a plot point for the future.

Sam and Andi continue their strange mating ritual. You just know something is going to screw that up before the season is over.

There is one more episode before the season (and possibly series) finale. I do hope the show continues to another season, as I enjoy the premise and the characters, even when the production is a little weak.
