What You Missed Last Night: Family Guy does Misery
Actually, maybe this should be titled "What I Missed Last Night," as I didn't catch Family Guy (or The Simpsons or 60 Minutes or the Red Sox/Rays game). Stupid power outage. Anyway, here's a scene (episode also here) from last night's episode of Family Guy. I have no idea why Stewie is dressed as Kathy Bates and I don't know why Brian is James Caan, but the ending of this clip is really bizarre.

The ONLY funny thing last night about Family Guy, is when Peter was talking about "The Shinning" and then the last clip was "Shawshank". That was just a horrible episode.

The Shinning is a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror story. The Stephen King story is The Shining.

It's been established several times that Brian is a writer, so that's why he plays James Caan's character.
Stewie has beaten Brian senselessly before as well, so him playing Kathy Bates' character also fits.

I thought it was the funniest episode in a while. I have two complaints, though. 1: The Misery segment had no ending. 2: The intro set up the episode as parodies of Stephen King stories when in fact the segments were parodies of movie adaptations of those stories.

last night was one of those nights where the simpsons was far better than family guy. oddly enough, both did anthology shows to boot.
the simpsons did a sort of 'women'-themed show with vignettes on elizabeth I (not all that good, kinda went along the lines of the movies -- but homer setting the spanish armada on fire was amusing), snow white (again, so-so -- but the way they basically flipped off disney was brilliant), macbeth (this was just utterly brilliant -- they retold the story of macbeth within the setting of a theater company staging macbeth -- and the ending was just fantastic) and finally 'atlas shrugged' -- as set in maggie's pre-school (with maggie as roarke...the jodie foster cameo really elevated this vignette to something special, imo.)
by comparison, the family guy stuff was all sort of flat. and hearing roy scheider felt almost creepy...hasn't he been dead over a year?

i saw family guy first, and thought it was absolute crap (i've only seen shawshank, read none of them... only found the shawshank bit mildly amusing, ahted the other 2.)
when i started watching simpsons and realized it was a clip show, i yelled at my TV... but then i realized that simpsons actually does a good job at clip shows.

i prefered family guy, mainly because i have seen all 3 movies and read all 3 books. i thought the entire episode was a tongue in cheek tribute to stephen king, and well done.
The simpsons doesnt have the same edge as family guy, whereas family guy sets no boundaries (the joaquin phoenix joke was tragic yet incredibly funny), the simpsons would never dare go there.
