(S05E25) About midway through tonight's show, I was prepared to write about how disappointed I was that only one week out from the conclusion of the Michael Scott Paper Company arc, we were subjected to such a throwaway episode. Here's what I would have written: "How many times can we see Michael be disappointed that no one wants to join him in his crazy shenanigans? This is a 'go-to' plotline that I wish they would stop going to!" I would have then nodded solemnly at the screen, content that I had proved once again that blogging about TV is the most important job a person can have.
But before I had the chance to craft the rest of that review, something awesome happened. Like most awesome things, it started with two hot girls dancing with each other ...
I'm talking of course about the eight minute dance party that closed out the episode.
See, for the most part, I'm a rotten misanthrope who wouldn't leave the house if it weren't for the fact that the only thing I loathe more than other people is myself. For some reason, however, I completely and utterly love dancing to cheesy music.
Thus, I found the dance party in the hollowed-out remains of the Michael Scott Paper Company to be one of the finest moments in the show's history.
I'm serious, I don't think I stopped smiling throughout the entire third act. All the pieces were in place for me to hate this episode -- a cartoonish Michael Scott, a recycled plotline, a feeling that this was a "filler" episode -- and yet everything came together beautifully.
These are people we have come to know, and an episode like this one is, in a weird kind of way, a reward for those of us who tune in religiously every week. There wasn't any kind of big drama -- no "Casino Night"-type revelations -- tonight was just about characters we love having a good time together.
It was hard not to get wrapped up in it.
Other Stuff:
-- Speaking of that dramatic arc, it feels a little strange to be so close to the end of the season with everybody in a good place emotionally. The law of TV averages usually dictates some manufactured drama before season's end, but The Office has been pretty good at defying our expectations. I have no idea what the writers will do next (and that's a good thing!)
-- We had not one but two people-as-animal jokes this week. Of the two, I thought Phyllis as a horse was funnier. (Though Kevin's "I wanted a cookie" line had me rolling.)
-- If someone said that there were five hours worth of outtakes featuring Andy and Kelly doing their dance-off, how long do you think you would watch? I think I go 2 hours at least.
-- Another tremendous moment: Angela involuntarily moves her feet to the music and then a quick pan to Michael's absolutely glee at this. I'm telling you, this was a great, great episode.
-- Here's an update concerning last week's rant about the casual Friday continuity issues. After my wife read the review, she called me from work and, speaking for many of you, said, "you're an idiot". Ah, the joy of married blogging. Here's hoping she liked this review a little better.
As always, your comments are the otter's oil on my back.

Nothing at all about PB&J?
Still, you pretty much nailed it with what I also thought of this episode. The party scene saved it... And I really do hope that Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration isn't cheating on Phyllis with the new secretary. That'd be about as heartbreaking as anything they could do.

Sometimes space considerations mean I don't get to everything. Like, unfortunately, I had to cut approximately 4000 words about my feelings on Pam's strapless dress. (Well, that was less about space than it was an exercise my therapist wants me to try to "get my feelings into a 'healthy space'", whatever that means.)
Anyway, you're right, I should have commented on PB&J. I have two thoughts about their almost wedding:
1. It was sweet that their extended office family acting goofy got them to change their mind regarding doing a big wedding.
2. It says something about how good the writing has been that I actually bought for the majority of the episode that we were going to have the seminal moment in Office history -- JAM because official! -- done off screen in Youngstown, Ohio. We expect certain things from TV -- weddings, for instance, are "special episodes" where the two characters get married in the living room of the main character (for some reason). The fact that I was so ready to believe that the writers would allow JAM's wedding to be handled so differently than what we're used to proves that this is not TV as usual.
So, uh, there you have it!

I didnt like that they changed their minds. I thought they were going to see the Disco Cafe like their reception and then go to Ohio. I felt that was sweet.

I'm usually a The Office apologist, but this episode was downright awful, and the dance scene was cringeworthy.....

I think that chick was the one he met at the Michael Scott Paper Company open house.

It was the same girl Kevin met at the last-minute, post-blood drive Valentine's Day single's mixer.

Creed's Disco ball: "now I won't know who's driving behind me"
When Michael was calling himself daddy, Andy's baby-talk voice made me so uncomfortable!
what was with the hair-do's of Bob Vance's guys? hideoulsy hilarious!

Dwight and Phyllis have an interesting relationship, from the auction and now last night's episode. For a second I thought we would eventually find out Bob Vance was having an affair in the next couple of episodes, and then Phyllis and Dwight would have their own affair. That would be unholy.

That whole scene in the conference room was cringeworthy for me. I do not need to see Dwight, in an undershirt, rubbing down Phyllis. Although, I've got to admit - I nearly spit out my drink when he fed her a carrot.
And who else thought Andy was going to hook up with Kelly?

This was a great review. I felt the exact same- I almost turned it off because Michael was acting so ridiculously, the it all turned around!

I really liked how they brought back Dwight and Phyllis's weird-almost friendship. When Dwight fed her a carrot I busted up.
It is eerie that Bob Vance of Vance Refridgeration hired a secretary that looks a lot like Phyllis. He definately has a "type."
Was "Everybody Dance Now" by C&C Music Factory a little nod to Evan Almighty? Steve Carrell even used some of the same moves.
Finally, how funny was it that Angela didn't have to duck at all under the limbo stick?

I love every scene Creed is in but I'm so glad that the writers don't use him too much. I'd hate to see such a wonderful character become a gimmick.

You know that scene when Michael told Creed he could still hear the music, and Creed said, "I hear it too, boss"? Did anyone notice that Creed had just walked out of the men's room eating fried chicken??? Creed was eating...in the MEN'S BATHROOM.

I agree that the episode totally redeemed itself in the third act. Angela casually walking under the limbo stick was great.
Who knew Andy had such killer dance moves? It seemed like the entire cast wanted to bust out laughing while watching him, even Creed!
It was nice to see the new receptionist have such a goofy personality, a la Dwight and Michael. I could see she and Dwight having a relationship in the future. I mean, c'mon, she carries her birth certificate in her purse!
