It looks like NBC is going to expand Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" segment with more half-hour specials, most likely on Thursday nights. Judging by the success of SNL and its Thursday night election specials during the campaign season, this move isn't too surprising. Plus, this is a progressive step in reaching the network's ultimate goal, which seems to be filling the airwaves with as many former SNL employees as possible. Actually, the next season of Celebrity Apprentice is probably just going to be all the early-90s players that aren't doing movies right now. And Rob Schneider. That guy isn't doing anything.
According to the report, Seth Meyers will be anchoring the show with possible occasional contributions by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to kind of, sort of promote Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock, respectively. Heck, they might as well throw Jimmy Fallon in there anyway since he's doing Late Night.
I quite like Meyers but he's still not a particularly strong, definable character during his "Weekend Update" segments. I'm curious to see if people are willing to tune in to see him and only him, especially now that there's no extra-specific super-hot topic (like the election) to consistently bring in viewers.
Maybe the big draw-in will be to see how Seth Meyers's mental health holds up. Working as SNL's head writer must be exhausting enough; throwing on another half hour of independent material is going to be, you know, not so fun on his stress level.
Will Meyers's head explode on live television, like a macabre Gallagher show gone terribly right? Place your bets now!

I really wish they'd add Seth a full time partner. He's done a fine job solo, but he's no where near as good as when he's had partners. He was great at playing off Amy. Solo, he seems to lose something. And I don't find the pop in acts that funny either, some are but most aren't.

SNL is in another decline. Weekend Update is the only marginally funny part of the show. The very UNfunny Tracey Morgan hosting the bland cast was the worst show of the year.

It makes me wonder why they are doing this without having an election the want to influence.

SNL had no influence on the last election. Anybody who thinks they did is an idiot.
Obama won because he was the best candidate and people are no longer buying the GOP lies. It had nothing to do with "liberal media", ACORN or Saturday Night Live.

Whether they actually did influence anything isn't the point. Its the fact that they were so desperately trying. Face it every day Barry gave them more "stupid president" material than Bush did in a year but they just glossed it over pretended he was boring and bright. And Biden! Holy sheeeeet. You don't even need skits, just play his comments straight up the guy is a psycho.
Anyway, the bigger point is what will they do since they clearly can't poke fun at the lord messiah the most magnificent Barry Hussein Obama.
PS. why isn't everything fixed yet?

Why isn't everything fixed yet? Maybe because W. spent eight freaking years ruining this country and Obama has been in office for three months.
But you go ahead and keep trying. Calling him Barry will definitely work so be sure and keep that up.

Yeah you guys are right. Saturday Night Live is completely responsible for the downfall of the conservative movement in America. That's completely reasonable.

Meyers is doing a fine job as solo anchor. I do miss the dual anchor style though, and I hope they bring it back, although I don't think anyone else on the show really fits the part right now. I kind of wish they would have thought of that earlier. Colin Quinn might not have sucked so hard if he'd had a partner.
And the drop-ins definitely need to stop. Every once in a while there's a funny one, but mostly they just feel like crappy filler.
I'll watch half-hour specials. Especially any where Seth and Amy team up. Those two played off each other perfectly. I especially miss "Really!? with Seth and Amy".
