Apparently, if you are a fan of House, and you want to see House and Cuddy get together, you are a "Huddy" fan. Not sure if this actually came from fans or from Fox marketing, but tonight's episode is being marketed specifically to the Huddy crew. There's even a promo spot on the Fox site that addresses that crowd by name, and shows titillating images of House and Cuddy together at the doorstep, Cuddy asking, "You want to kiss me, don't you?" House replies, "I always want to kiss you." This is cut with images of House and Cuddy shedding some clothing and pawing at each other. Considering how much tension this kind of storyline brings up (think of how many people still remember Moonlighting for that reason alone, and even bring the show up whenever there is sexual or romantic tension between characters), you'd be expecting a lot to think that Lisa Edelstein (who plays Cuddy), on a conference call with reporters Friday, would give away too much. In fact, given all of the twists and turns this season has given us, you might expect her to have a little misdirection handy for when the inevitable questions come up.
Edelstein fended off questions about how sex might change things between House and Cuddy, rumors about the aftermath, and even whether or not the scenes we saw might be a dream sequence or a flashback of some sort. Given the fact that House has been hallucinating due to sleep deprivation for the last couple of episodes, it's a fair question. And not one anyone involved with the show was likely to answer. As they say, you'll have to watch to find out.
Someone asked flat out, how was the sex?
"I have a great friendship with Hugh [Laurie], and he's super-sexy so who could complain about kissing him?" said Edelstein.
Notice that answer was about Lisa and Hugh, not Cuddy and House. But she did give a few hints about the relationship. She indicated the story will continue through the last two episodes of the season, airing tonight and next week. "I don't think it's a passing thing," she said. "It's been going on for a long time, whether or not they've acted on it. I don't necessarily think it will ever be a satisfying relationship in terms of both of them settling in and saying, this is what we're doing. She has a complicated relationship with men, it seems. She likes the screwed up ones. I totally relate."
How would the hospital staff relate to them being together? "I think that the rest of the staff is pretty much waiting for them to get together," says Edelstein. "I don't think it's a secret. It's not like he doesn't talk about it. He's constantly referring to her body and her way and teasing her in front of everybody else. It's like schoolyard banter. He might as well be chasing her and pulling her braids."
How about the rumor that Cuddy will wind up pregnant with twins? That one was outrageous enough to put down directly (although the conspiracy-minded may have reason to pause here). "I don't know that Cuddy should be wandering around the hospital carrying twins," said Edelstein. "I'm not sure that's really the House that everyone knows as a show."
Perhaps most interesting, when asked about Cuddy and House's past together, Edelstein gave some tidbits that may or may not be her own view of history. "Initially, he was kind of legendary in the school she was an undergraduate in, and I think she was maybe even a little obsessed with him and she end
ed up auditing a class that she knew he would be in," Edelstein said. "I think he was doing a brush up class or something and she audited it to kind of check him out because he was exactly the kind of lunatic she likes." We may find this in future episodes, or maybe not, but it's a fun story. The one thing she can say for sure, and that anyone following the show these five seasons already knows, is that wherever it goes from here, House and Cuddy have been a lot of fun to watch. "Their relationship is so much more nuanced now," said Edelstein. "It's this beautiful, complicated, adult relationship between those two characters. And neither person is one thing or another. They're dynamic individuals, and that's what makes this a spectacular show to be on, because that's where all of the characters have gone."
