Last week, I devoted my first Jane After Dark column to my top five Buffy moments. I was thrilled to read all the responses, both here on TV Squad and at Whedonesque, where the post was picked up. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are a passionate bunch! This week, I thought it would be fun to delve into my favorite Buffy hookups. One that didn't make the list but holds a special place in my heart is Giles and Joyce. It was a fleeting moment, but one that was fun and would have made for great storytelling had it continued.
But who to pair Buffy up with -- Spike, Angel or Riley? What about Spike and Drusilla? And while Willow and Tara had a special love affair, there's a lot to be said for Willow and Oz. And what of Xander? Sure, he and Anya had a fun romance, but his hookups with Cordelia and even Faith were intense in their own way.
Oh the choices! Read on for my thoughts, and please add your own in the comments below.
1. Buffy and Spike. Sure, their hot-sex-turned-rabid-sweet affair began as sheer hatred for each other, but somewhere along the way, Spike got a soul and Buffy just couldn't hold out any longer. All that vile turned to lust and then a bizarre sort of love took hold until their hands touched and burst into flames as he sacrificed himself to save the world. But what about when he tried to rape her? Should that have kept them off my list? It's a good question. They went through a lot, and while certainly tragic, the near-rape was just a small part of their journey.
2. Buffy and Angel. Of course, I can't leave out Buffy's first love, Angel. Just as Spike found his soul for Buffy, Angel and Buffy's hookup caused Angel to lose his soul. And oh, the day after they first made love -- when she hugged him and then realized that he wasn't Angel, but rather the evil Angelus -- heartbreaking! They saved each other time and time again, and she even had to kill him to save the world. I can't think of a more tragic love affair in TV history, but through it all their love endured, even as distance separated them.
3. Willow and Tara. "Lesbian" hardly defines the romance shared by these two witches, but sure enough, they were lesbians. I like how it grew slowly, each bringing out the best in the other. I have to say, though, I was disappointed when they broke up during Willow's "dark and veiny" period. I like to think that Tara could have stood by her girl, but I guess that's not how addiction works -- and Willow was addicted to her spells and potions. My favorite moment for these two was when Tara sent out a spell in the form of a tiny blue ball, flitting through the air to find her love and bring her home. It showed the deep connection these girls shared -- until it came to a tragic end, that is.
4. Xander and Anya. With his skill at the one-liners and her giddy schoolgirl charm, these two complemented each other like nobody's business. But I can't tell you how frustrated I was when Xander walked out on Anya on their wedding day. First of all, after all the wacky hijinks that took place since Buffy moved to town, did he NOT know that his "future self" might be a weird spell? And yet he immediately assumes it's for real and leaves his poor girl at the altar. Argh.
5. Buffy and Riley. Ok, after much deliberation, these two get my fifth slot. After knowing each other for a bit, what a fun moment when they finally realized they were both slaying vampires. I appreciated when Buffy showed Riley her fighting skills, and it only made them more passionate for each other. How different things would have been if he'd only seen her when she came running up to the helicopter as he was leaving that night to fight the good fight elsewhere. Then showed up later in the series with his wife!
Ok, give it to me. Like my picks or think I'm off my rocker? I await your comments with gleeful anticipation.

I'm so glad you've got Tara & Willow in the mix. :-)
I think you're missing the point of Hells Bells though—it wasn't Xander thinking that the demon's vision was really the future; it was that it reflected back at Xander all his existing fears and reservations about commitment, marriage, and the long hard process of building a life with someone. It made him realise that he just wasn't ready. (I was disappointed that they didn't get married too, but in true Joss style it did set up Anya's relapse, Buffy's betrayal by Spike, etc., etc.)

I really liked Xander and Cordelia together in the beginning when they would be fighting, the romantic music would play, and then they'd be making out in a closet. After awhile, it got kind of old when they stopped giving Cordelia anything to do.
I was just curious, Jane, how much did you know about Buffy before you started watching? Did you know the outcome of the show or have any major plot lines ruined since the show had been off the air for so long?

Spuffy as #1? Even on the list? And RILEY? I like your other 3 picks, but those 2 are just wrong. Willow & Oz and Spike & Drusilla would both be better choices. They were actually IN LOVE. Even stone-cold dead vampires put out more heat and human emotion than Riley. But Spuffy is just a travesty.

The spuffy hookup got #1 on "TV's hottest hookups" so... I think they should be on the list. I thought they were pretty hot although Spike wasn't exactly very sexy--> way too scrawny =]

CrystalSinger - Thanks for the insight on the thwarted wedding of Xander/Anya. I figured I was missing something deeper there, and thinking back now, the episodes leading up to the wedding were filled with Xander being nervous about getting married, so that makes sense as to why he didn't go through with it. They could have made it work, though, and would have had such cute babies!
And later towards the end, they got together again, right? But decided the spark wasn't there? How could that be? I believe in the last episode, didn't someone make it seem like Anya had sacrificed herself to save them, and Xander said, "That's my girl"? Someone reboot my memory on that. Anyway, it just shows in my mind that Xander never stopped loving her.
Jen - I had very little knowledge of Buffy before I watched the series recently. My mom and nephew are devotees, and I caught one episode at my mom's once - the one where Buffy and Spike had sex for the first time with the building crashing down around them. That made me think, hmmm, maybe I need to check this out! But that was years ago and I finally just got around to watching the series.
And Buffy fans were very careful not to tip me off to any major spoilers, so many thanks to them!

actually Willow's dark and veiny period was after Tara was shot by Warren while he was shooting Buffy. Willow lost it, sucked up all the magic's from all the books in the Magic Shop and then got really dark and veiny.

rljones - Clearly, I need to watch the series again already. So Tara broke up with Willow during her witch-spell-addiction, then they got together later, then Tara was shot, then Willow went all dark and veiny. Is that the right progression?

Anya and Xander was easily my favourite too. And you commented that they said the spark wasn't there, that's not quite right. Anya says that her and Xander still 'spark' they just never quite get back together. Xander running through the halls of the school calling for her was quite nice.
I like the choice of Willow and Tara too. I'd probably take Spike and Dru over one of the Buffy pairings, or Willow and Oz.

My favs in order:
#1 - Angel and Buffy
(Twins souls meet and enduring love ensues. How can this not be first?)
#2 - Spike and Drusilla
(Spike needs to be needed, and Drusilla was his perfect needy love)
#3 - Angel and Drusilla
(While Spike and Dru were terrific, Angel and Drusilla's psychotic devotion to one another and pain was more compelling and insanely delicious)
#4 - Willow and Tara
(Tara balanced Willow in a way no one else could.)
#5 - Xander and Cordelia
(His sarcasm and her uncompromising truthfulness. How could these two NOT be together?)

Yeah, I'm not sure Riley even deserves to be on the list. He was more of a rebound guy. That whole season was actually one of my least favorite.
As for Buffy/Spike, one of the coolest lines in the series was the last episode when Spike was going to give his life to save the world. Buffy said, "I love you" to which Spike replied, "No you don't, but thanks for saying it."

No Willow/Oz. They are always near the top of my list. I still think that was the best Willow relationship out of all of them. Xander was more of a crush she had to get out of her system. I only started liking Tara after she broke up with Tara. And I just wanted someone to kill Kennedy.
But Oz... I loved me some Oz at the get go. And their break up scene was one of the best break up scenes on the show. I tear up just thinking about it. I'm like Willow. Some part of me will always be waiting for Oz.
BTW: Buffy cheated on Riley with Angel. She dropped that fool as soon as Angel turned human and wouldn't have went back to him if Angel wouldn't have turned back time.
And as much as I love Spuffy (tearing apart a house and the scene in the Bronze, whoa) Buffy only loved what Spike became for her. She never loved really loved Spike. And Spike could see that.
I loved Spike with every girl he was with. Even when he was abusing Harmony.
Any Faith/Wood fans?

CJ - Not sure I agree that Buffy cheated on Riley with Angel. By 'I Will Remember You' her and Riley had flirted a little but they hadn't been on a date, kissed or slept together yet. It's the following Buffy episode where she goes out with Riley for the first time (the picnic that Willow crashes in Something Blue).
All of Buffy's three main relationships would make my list, and probably in the order you have them in Jane. I love the twistedness of Buffy/Spike and the changes it went through from S4 to S7. I appriciate the tragic love of Buffy/Angel, though certain aspects of it squick me out a bit. You mention in the Buffy/Spike part about the attempted rape, there were also some pretty dark times with Buffy/Angel - he tried to kill her a few times too!
I actually like Buffy/Riley, they clearly weren't right for each other in the end but he was the kind of boyfriend that she needed and he was a decent guy (and pretty hot too).
My other two spot would go to Willow/Tara and Willow/Oz.

You're right, Lyv. I always saw it as cheating though. I liked every relationships of Buffy except Riley. Because he was so needy.
With Spuffy, I was more into the Spike longing/obsessing over Buffy than when it supposedly became love. I like that play better. I just never believed she loved him. Even when he became the kind of man she could love, I don't believe she loved it.
Its tragic in that way.
On Angel,
I wish they would have put Cordy together with NuWesley. Never liked him with Fred. Loved him with Lilah. But I always thought they should have went back to Cordy and Wesley.

I think someone needs to rewatch "Hell's Bells". Xander quite clearly said that he *knew* the "future him" was a spell—but it didn't matter, because he could see far too much of himself in it, and knew that it *could* have really been him.
That's why he left.

Buffy & Faith -
And how about a very early and fairly short hookup-
Giles & Jenny Calendar
