Disney grooming Wizards of Waverly Place to be their "next big thing"

Wizards of Waverly PlaceDisney is doing everything they can to make sure that their target demo of 9-14 year olds can't breathe without choking on the Russos of Wizards of Waverly Place. Other than that, And with Miley Cyrus talking publicly about life after Hannah Montana, whenever that might be, it's time to look to Wizards of Waverly Place's Selena Gomez. As such, Disney has renewed Wizards for a third season and even greenlit a telefilm for the property.

What they really need to do is stream it on Hulu to ensure it is. The kids are online, you know.

After all, you've got Hannah Montana possibly ending, and there's no telling how long you can keep the High School Musical franchise going with the actors getting older and graduation having already happened. Who knows if people would embrace a new cast? But they have already embraced Wizards. In its first two seasons it's become the second highest-rated show in that youth demo. So while they're still working on renewing Hannah Montana for a fourth season, at least they know what's next in line.

The Wizards of Waverly Place movie premieres this August, two months after Gomez appears in another Disney original; Princess Protection Program on June 26. The biggest wave of support I can give is that my son absolutely loves this show, and he's right in that 9-14 demo that harasses their parents for all that spending money to buy on the merchandising. Not that there's been a ton of that for Wizards yet. Certainly not like there has been for HSM and Hannah.

UPDATED! But what he wants to know is why they're skipping his favorite-show and new "Ms. Thang" on the Disney Channel. Where's the love for iCarly and Miranda Cosgrove? She's been around longer, has an established fan-base, and she was discovered based on her singing. I wonder if Camp Cosgrove is irritated at being overlooked as the next teen queen of the Disney Channel. (UPDATE: A good reason you all brought up for this is that iCarly is on Nickelodeon. It's a valid point and one that's hard to argue, but I'll keep trying to).

After all, it would be easy to transition iCarly into a show about her burgeoning singing career as one of those YouTube types of artists that gets discovered and makes it big. Boom! Instant Hannah Part Deux. It's a lot harder to work Gomez as a singer into the plotlines of Wizards on a regular basis. Maybe we're on the cusp of a new Disney diva feud? Or at least one the tabloids can pretend is happening.
